I'm not trying to steal Don's thunder for the video he's thinking of doing but I'd like to get a more general consenses. Also for the record I'm not making this thread as a last hoorah for ASA because I think it may stick around but I've been thinking about this quite a bit lately and wanted to get the opinons of the other folks on this board.

What anime did the worst? Didn't fit at all? Polorized the audience beyond return? Whether anyone liked them or not, there were some massive bombs for Adult Swim anime and some other shows that really left the audience scratching their heads. Some were too little too late, some were too dull to keep the audience, some were too brilliant for their own good and others were alright shows that never seemed to find an audience. Some might even be relatively successful in the grand scheme but didn't do particularly well on Adult Swim.

Yeah another vote off thread.

There will be 10 spots.

Keep it civil if you want to say why you feel such and such show was a bomb and AS probably shouldn't have bothered with it.

Vote in order of how bad of a choice for ASA they were so your #10 gets 1 point and your #1 gets 10 points. As per usual.

Reign is #1 for sure. What reason it was acquired for I am not sure, but it came, it went, and nobody cared and if they did, it was something they wished death upon.

I mean come now, a needlessly ambitious story, odd character designs, thongs, weird stuff, and what have you.

My day has come!

Boy, we're gonna be here for a while, mostly because it's a long list. I will provide expalantions for all my choices, but they will be civil. Well, let's do this!

For the convenience of others in the poll, I'm going to link the TZ Wiki's list of action shows. Y7 filler shows do not count because they were just that, filler. Although they were probably an ill omen of things to come.

#10. Blood+ A sequel to a one-shot movie which was much longer but also much more boring than said movie. It also seemed to be chock full of that 75% dialog, 25% actual action formula ASA uses for most of its shows. Dull and boring.
#9. Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack. Settle down! I love Gundam! Char's Counterattack is an awesome ending to one of the greatest anime sagas of all time. But it's the ending to a show that we never saw the entirety of. We saw half the beginning (MSG) and none of the middle (Z and ZZ). So airing the end seemed kinda strange. I love the film, but any Gundam newbie watching it will feel entirely lost as knowledge of the previous events is a MUST to understand what the heck is going on and why you should care about these people.
#8. Reign: The Obsession of Alexander. For whatever reason, Peter Chung is still getting work from his Aeon Flux days. What was a sprawling and actually well thought out epic was doomed by one simple glaring character design.

NONE OF THE MEN WORE PANTS.

That alone completely killed the interest in the series. The character designs and plain unlikeable characters (Alexander was a noted jerk in real life who literally bawled and cried to keep his troops pressing into India) made sure this was one of the worst examples of what ASA had to offer. It's a shame because if the character designs were done by...anyone else, the show might have been redeemable.
#7. Android Kikaider- A TV-PG show that's actually an update of an old tokusatsu show from the 70's with a villian that George Lucas cited as inspiration for Darth Vader? Sounds decent enough, except for three major problems.

1. The animation was practically non-existent.
2. The concluding series OVA was cut to shreds including the epilogue.
3. Unless you live in Hawaii, odds are you have no connection to Kikaider as a kid.

So yeah, a PG nostalgia revival that was disconnected from said nostalgia and not good enough to last on its own merits. Making it #7 on the list.
#6. Paranoia Agent- Utter boredom and pretentiousness crammed into 22 minutes of Saturday night TV. A complete ratings bomb from all sides. The more I saw it, the more I had this weird (but unproven) feeling that AS wanted something like Gantz, couldn't air it due to the violence and sex, and went with this show instead, the complete opposite. This show did terrible, and the worst part was it became the standard bearer for what ASA wanted their shows to resemble.
#5. Astro Boy- A museum relic is the best way to describe the 60's Astro Boy. Something to be admired, appreciated, but decidedly NOT practical for the modern audience. So when Mike Lazzo chose to air it because he personally liked the series, head banging ensued. It's not an adult show, and the retro factor holds up for all of one episode before someone wants a new show.
#4. Case Closed. Well, I'm running out of positive things to say the deeper we go into this list. Case Closed is a kids show. There is no getting around it. Airing it on Adult Swim makes about as much sense as airing Beserk on DisneyXD. It just doesn't fit. And not to mention, it's incredibly formulaic. Someone dies, Conan drugs detective, reveals the killer. It's not an adult show, and as far as mystery shows go, it's not sosphisticated enough to grab people outside of the target audience. If killing people was kosher for kids TV, it would make a wonderful DisneyXD or Nick show.

OK, that was positive. I still think Case Closed above all was a victim of mismarketing rather than being a genuienly bad show. But I'm not the right age to enjoy it.
#3. Witch Hunter Robin- Unlikeable characters, terrible designs, and a boring formulaic plot combine into a horrible meandering experience for all. This show was apparently supposed to get a live action adaptation on Sci-Fi, then the show aired and everyone realized it would be a really bad idea.
#2. Eureka 7- What can you say about Eureka 7? The romance angle is immature and feels like it was made for a 4 year old girl. All the character designs are ugly save the skysurfing robots. The characters are jerks. The main hook of the story does the exact opposite and drives you away. So you create a really, really bad romance that just happens to have romance in it, proving we were a long way from the days of Dangaioh where the pilots were competent. Godannar did it in reverse, but well, Godannar was better on all angles, while Eureka 7 crashed and burned one week in, making it #2 on the list.

And the #1 worst anime on Adult Swim is...

Moribito- Guardian of the Spirit.

This is it. THE worst. The absloute worst show they could have possibly gotten at a time when they NEEDED a hit. You need a show with nonstop action? Moribito makes Tom Goes to the Mayor look like Die Hard at points. You need a show with an involving plot? Moribito is about as engaging as a lecture on Kant. You need something with thrills and suspense? Moribito brings you snoozes and snores. It felt like, in essence, Adult Swim saying "you know what? This block is doomed. And we don't care. So we'll air this bomb and you'll ignore it just like everything else." So not only was the show bad on its own merits, it reflected a "WE DON'T CARE!" attitude from Adult Swim as a whole.

So there's my bottom 10. If you have any objections, feel free to PM me. I'm more than willing to listen to criticsm you may have.

Pilot Candidate.
^ Yeah, pretty much this.

Pilot Candidate was actually so bad that WS instantly regretted picking it up after watching it, and shoved it on ASA where it could do the least damage.

It was essentially filler for an action block that didn't have enough shows. So it's pretty much in the same boat as Y7 Outlaw Star.

I remember watching the first episode and not being impressed by anything. Then I gave it another two episodes and the story did nothing for me so I quit. I can barely ever remember the show because of that, except for how one of the kids was voiced by the same actor as Tai from Digimon. But man, for it to be that bad, they had to burn it on ASA. I can somewhat forgive it due to it being one of the first few anime they had access to, but it doesn't excuse it's sucking.

It can't get bombier than Moribito. The show may be good, but it's had no success whatsoever.

I thought Wolf's Rain was a terrible show. The only thing the characters ever did for all of the show was travel, travel, and travel more in the same-looking, bland environments. WS showed us mercy by deciding not to air the four episode recap. Also, the original ending wasn't bad, but when they continued beyond that with the four OVA episodes... that was bad. The show just left a bad taste in my mouth, and I hope I won't be forced to watch it again later in life.

I'd say Wolf's Rain was worse than Paranoia Agent. At least PA had a cult following, and i found it intriuging<sp>. WR started out interesting, but the ending of the series was confusing, and the OVA was nothing but "you know all those characters you got to know over the series? We're going to kill them all off!".

I never really kept track or watched much of the anime shows on Adult Swim, but even I remember the sheer hate Pilot Candidate got back when the Adult Swim forum here first started up. Good times, good times.

While I love the show to death, didn't Lupin the 3rd get low ratings on Adult Swim?

Ah, I don't know. There's been so many anime that have come and gone and I didn't even watch all of them (I didn't really get into anime until about a few years into [as]'s existence.

But yeah, Moribito is up there. I mean, [as] even acknowledged that it was doomed to fail in the bumper before the first episode aired.

Also, what about s-CRY-ed? I liked it okay, but I'm sure how well it did for [as]. I'm just throwing a show out there that no one has mentioned yet.

It struggled premiering on Saturdays but did really well in weekday reruns.

Not a single mention of Milk-chan yet? Or has everyone else purged it from their minds? When you consider how much confidence Kim Manning had in that show's humor, it must have been humiliating for her when no one else outside of WS agreed.

Compared to Milk-chan, every other show already mentioned on this thread was a roaring success and a critically acclaimed masterpiece by comparison, even Pilot Candidate and Reign.

And Eureka Seven, Blood+ and Moribito were all good shows (not great ones, but good regardless), but they debuted long after anime had seen its best days on the network. They would all have done much better with the old weekday schedule or the early days of Saturday anime and the accompanying advertising. Maybe their performance would not have been fantastic, but still better than what they ended up getting.

Milk-Chan tops my list easily along with Pilot Candidate BUT PC wasn't around long enough to determine if it was really a bomb or not... or was it?

Things I wouldn't consider to be bombs but instead shows that just got robbed. Case Closed and Lupin the 3rd and maybe Moribito maybe not. Geass, E7, Blood+, Paranoia Agent and several others had plenty of chances to get an audience but couldn't. Bad slots and no renewals screwed over Case Closed, no renewals left Lupin without a chance and really bad slots were by no means fair to Moribito but all and all it just didn't pull its weight. Real shame.

Now I don't know if REIGN did that poorly... seems like it did alright but then again back then the only shows really showing any success in ratings on ASA were Bebop, Yu Yu Hakusho and Inuyasha and later Trigun I'd assume since it stuck around for a good long while. I suppose I'm not sure if Kakaider did bad either but I suppose it only got about 1 run. I thought it was one of the best shows they ever played honestly, until the OVA anyway.

I'm calling shenanigans on this one.

The characters were likable, and far more so than most of the characters than most anime. Admittedly, some are barely memorable, but unlikable? These characters weren't psychopaths, they didn't manipulate their friends to commit mass murder, they did not act like total jerks!

The main characters were pretty normal people, reacting like trained professionals, and most were sociable. Even Amon, the least sociable of the group, still shown that he had a human side.

Terrible designs? The main reason the show is so interesting is because of its somber colors, and mix of gtothic atmosphere with a modern setting. It was dark, but not too dark in which one think they landed in Warhammer 40K. And they didn't overdo the dark vaules (like Death Note, which caused me to almost became blind because of that). And the character designs were unique, it felt naturalsitic and subtle. They looked like inviduals, a look that they and only they could be recongized by.

And the plot, well, the begining was formulatic at first, but what it developed into was well worth watching the series.

Granted, WHR didn't work out on AS. However, it wasn't for the lack of trying.

I agree with everything you said but not for Case Closed. Detective Conan is not a kids show, well not on this side of the world. In Japan maybe but I loved that series. The only set back is it's a freakin' 600+ episodes long and it's still running in Japan.

These animes bombed and stinked in my opinon:
Witch Hunter Robin
Euerka Seven
Morbito
GitS (Both Series) - Yes I said that!
Wolf's Rain
Paranoia Agent
Blood+
Pilot Candiate

And Reign is not an anime folks!!!!

#6. Paranoia Agent- Utter boredom and pretentiousness crammed into 22 minutes of Saturday night TV. A complete ratings bomb from all sides. lolwut.

It's an adult show on adult swim. This is the type of stuff AS should be airing. Not shonen anime aimed as 12 year olds. Not to mention is probably the best anime AS has ever aired outside of Cowboy Bebop or Trigun.

The show was not confusing at all, in fact it was rather straightforward as long as you paid attention. Believe me, I won't defend Satoshi Kon from being called pretentious, but Paranoia Agent is really not that convoluted or hard to understand.

Also, I have no idea how you can compare this to Gantz. One's a mindless high octane action show, and the other is, well, not at all. But the "show did terrible"? How does that say anything about it's quality? Most anime on AS does bad, dude. It's hardly a reflection of their quality.

I wish more of AS's anime was like Paranoia Agent, but so far nothing they've aired has come close. Monster would have, but that's on SyFy now, so we'll let that one go.

Well... some anime did worse than others. In retrospect Paranoia Agent at least seemed to have some kind of following so maybe it shouldn't be on a list of bombs on AS and maybe it should. I suppose that's a matter of opinion but it is a good show or at least a very intriguing one.

Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
