Where did you learn that from? I heard that the shorts were another way to "Freshen up the show" but that seemed pretty extreme. I also noticed an odd pattern of other shows were converting to 7 minute shorts en masse around that time...
I think it's sad that he's so disliked that something wasn't really his fault. The whole "changed the format to focus on him" always seemed really flimsy to me, and anyway, the shorts were actually pretty good, once you got used to the real monsters and shorter episodes.
