It is the first weekend of June, and you know what that means…it used to mean E3, but now it means the digital-age replacement for E3 where a smug guy on a stage introduces about a hundred trailers in succession. Summer Game Fest, like its six-month-apart cousin The Game Awards, is a sensory overload, and it doesn’t take long for all the flashy attempts at attention to mush together. That’s why we’ve hand-plucked the trailers that deserve your attention the most.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation was the one trailer everybody expected, but when you think about it, it’s nice to expect something and get it…too many of these press presentations end with fan complaints that they didn’t see Game X appear. This time, there’s no Playstation exclusivity…the third and final game will be on everything Day One, from Switch 2 to XBox to PC. Revelation is currently forecasted for the spring of 2027.
Studio MDHR confirmed that a second Cuphead game is in the works. It’s the first time in four years we’ve heard from them, and it may be at least another four years before we hear more: the first Cuphead took MANY years to complete, what with the hand-drawn graphics and all. BUT they’re preparing something to tide us over: Mighty Cuphead Adventure, a retro throwback that literally runs on a Sega Master System. Carts will be sold for those who somehow still own an SMS, but modern console versions will be available too.
The best Alien game ever made, Alien: Isolation, is getting a sequel from the same creative team (Creative Assembly) and the same publisher (Sega). While you were confined to a space station in the first game, it appears you’ll have a wider open space to sneak around in this time…but is that good or bad for you? Amanda Ripley is implied to be the player character again but it has not been confirmed.
Fumito Ueda, who created the landmark PS2 titles Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, is working on gen Atlas, his next atmospheric exploration title. This time he is not working directly with Sony, but a third party called GenDesign, which means it will be cross-platform. Sadly, in contrast with all the games above, there is no Switch 2 version planned for this one.
Platinum Games is working on a video game adaption of the hit graphic novel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, which is a work of speculative fiction about an older Michelangelo being the last living Turtle out for revenge. You may have heard this was also going to be a movie…well, not anymore. Plans for that have been cancelled. But you will get a game eventually.
The Wolf Among Us was one of Telltale’s most beloved games, and now that Telltale lives again (well, sorta), the sequel has been saved. It’s been targeted for 2027 and not only that, a remaster of the first one will be released this holiday season. Both games are based on Fables, a long-running Vertigo series no longer in production after creator Bill Williingham had a fallout with DC that ended with him quitting forever AND claiming he’d released all his characters into public domain. The claim is dubious, but if you want to test it by making your own Wolf Among Us sequel, you can try…
Finally, we didn’t have to wait long for Shift Up to produce a sequel to Stellar Blade, though they’re not calling it Stellar Blade 2. Stellar Blade: Blood Rain uses a new protagonist in a new setting, but will continue the story, they tell us.
