Dr. Seuss' Oh, The Places You'll Go!

Oh, the Places You’ll Go! will be one of the next Dr. Seuss books to get an animated adaptation. Warner Bros. Pictures Animation has tapped Wicked director John M. Chu to bring the book to the big screen. The animated musical is set to be released on March 17, 2028.

Dr. Seuss' The GrinchDr. Seuss’s children’s books are known for their whimsical use of rhyming verse, imaginative creatures, and vibrant landscapes. How The Grinch Stole Christmas! has had the most success in adaptations, from the original 1966 animated TV special to the live action Jim Carrey movie in 2000 to Illumination’s version in 2018, people can’t seem to get enough Grinch. Luckily, there is much more material to be mined from Dr. Seuss’ books and his wubbulous world. We were treated with Horton Hears a Who! in 2008 and The Lorax in 2012. We were also subjected to the horrendous live action Mike Myers version of The Cat in the Hat in 2003, which made it clear that animated musical movies are the way to go with Dr. Seuss adaptations.

An animated Cat in the Hat should be coming out in 2026, which will spin off a Thing One and Thing Two movie. Oh, the Places You’ll Go! will soon follow. Written in 1990, the final book from Dr. Seuss employs second person narration to tell a young protagonist of all the things he will see and do. Dr. Seuss books are short, so we can expect a lot of original material to bring the story up to feature length. We can also look forward to some great songs.

Director John M. Chu, who is currently enjoying ten Academy Award nominations for Oh, The Places You'll Go! excerptWicked (the fifth highest grossing movie of 2024) is joined by Jill Culton (who directed Abominable in 2019 and 2006’s Open Season). Rob Lieber is writing the screenplay, and original songs will be penned by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. The duo, who have achieved EGOT status (that’s winning the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) have provided songs for La La Land, Lyle Lyle Crocodile, and the upcoming live action Snow White from Disney.

Oh, The Places You’ll Go! is produced by Bad Robot and made in collaboration with Dr. Seuss Enterprises. Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, the film will release on IMAX on March 17, 2028.
