E3 2016: Become A Sim Pirate With Rare’s Sea Of Thieves

One of the most anticipated games of the XBox’s future lineup is Sea of Thieves. It’s what may hope will be the comeback for the fallen studio known as Rare, which sunk into a pit of disappointing follow-ups and Kinect titles over the last 15 years.

Most were pleased with the first real glimpse they saw today of Rare’s co-op pirate game. You and your friends sign up for the sea life, board your own ship and go exploring. Discover islands, uncover buried treasure, and fend off attacks from rival pirate gangs (and since they’re real people, they’re going to be a hundred times as vicious as any AI). For this E3 look at the title, Rare invited four gamers to test-play an in-progress version of Sea of Thieves. Their excursion lasted about five minutes before they wound up sinking their entire ship, but at least we know they weren’t phony.

Personally when I think of the return of Rare games, I’d like them in a more traditional form, but I guess that’s what Yooka-Laylee is for. If co-ops are what you’re into, though, Sea of Thieves may be your cup of rum. It’s still in development and has no release date.
