Actor Ernest Borgnine passed away on Sunday, July 8, 2012, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center at the age of 95. His career in Hollywood spanned for more than six decades, with his gruff voice, gap-toothed smile, and acting versatility leading to roles as villains, heroes, and common joes. Borgnine was best known as the title character in 1955’s Marty, for which he won the Best Actor Oscar; and as the star of the ABC sitcom McHale’s Navy, which ran from 1962 – 1966.
Despite his distinctive voice, Borgnine did little work in voice-over, with his most prominent roles in animation being the recurring role of Mermaid Man in SpongeBob SquarePants, “Carface” in the All Dogs Go to Heaven TV series and Christmas Carol movie, and Kip Killagin in Small Soldiers.
