"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

YES!!!!

All is right on the One Piece front in the US now (simultaneous WSJ chapters, simultaneous episodes, a great dub that is frequently continued, and now a (mostly, at least) uncut airing on US TV. It's perfect!

Why shouldn't they start from episode 1 from One Piece? It's been 5 years since One Piece last aired on Toonami and enough time has passed that people have forgot about it. Plus, these are the FUNi episodes, not 4Kids. They'll be uncut. I mean, if they started Naruto from episode 1, I don't see why they can't start One Piece from episode 1.

Because it's over 500 episodes and at one episode a week, it'd be a decade before we got to where Japan is now. If this was a weeknight run that's all fine and well, but I'd rather have something a bit newer if they're airing it weekly at one episode per week.

The Toonami Tumblr posted a rundown of the Momocon stuff in one handy posting.

ONE ANNOUNCEMENT TO RULE THEM ALL…And in the darkness, BIND THEM.

Hey guys! Below is the basic list of stuff we announced at Momocon.

1. In April (date tbd), we will premiere TOM 5, a new Absolution, and a new look for Toonami, including a new logo. Some of that stuff isn’t ready yet, so keep checking this blog and we’ll put up new stuff as we finish it. And no, still no Sara or Clydes… yet.
2. In the next couple of months we will premiere an online comic that will tell the story of How TOM 3 became TOM 4, how TOM 4 became TOM 3.5, where Sara and the Clydes are, and how we got TOM 5 and the new Absolution. We’ll offer more details on that when we have them.
3. Toonami will air One Piece this year. We’re not sure yet it if will replace Tenchi GXP or come in later, and we’re not sure where we will start in the episode order. We’ll let you know more in the coming months.
4. Next week, on Toonami’s birthday, we will be showing Evangelion 1.11 You Are [Not] Alone. The following week our schedule will return to normal (sorry, Soul Eater/Eureka/Sym-Bionic fans!). Schedule is posted below, scroll down to see it.
5. We were not able to make a promo for the Eva movie for various reasons, but that’s okay, we promise! It’s just a birthday present, not part of a larger series of “movie nights.” We’re still exploring that.
6. There will be a few other goodies airing on our birthday, so don’t miss it! And no… NO HINTS. You gotta watch! :)
7. We are still exploring short series to air, short series fans, so we’ll let you know if and when we have announcements in that area!
8. Video of the Toonami Momocon panel, as well as some interviews, were shot by the Toonami Faithful crew and will be up soon!
9. Thanks to Chad Bonin for inviting us to the panel, moderating and being a cool dude.
10. We love you!

And the referred to schedule.

*One Piece Official already supplies all of your legal uncut dub needs from episodes 1-205.
*206 starts the wonderful HD
*The series recaps the backgrounds of the Straw Hats in a big storyline that begins at episode 230.

The main reason why Naruto started from the beginning is because Disney has the rights to Shippuden. One Piece is a slow storyline to boot, thus its starting point is pretty critical since we won't get to any of the new exciting dub material for years with the beginning pace. Beginning or not, I will be happy to see this series on Toonami. :)

I understand that One Piece has over 500 episodes, but...ah well. Doesn't really matter to me I guess.

And I just was going to ask why there wasn't a promo for the EVA movie. Question answered.

Because that would take at least 4 years to get up to where Toonami last left off, and it is the later Seasons that really need the air time and support. The earlier Seasons have had enough exposure over the years, even if it was mostly the 4kids dub that aired on Toonami. Airing the more recent Season 4 dub would be more appealing, and it would support more of the future episodes getting dubbed. And, as much as I like One Piece, the earlier episodes move rather slowly, especially only airing once a week. Plus, in Naruto's case, they didn't have much of a choice because Shippuden is unavailable. One Piece actually has newer episodes that they can take advantage of airing. They didn't restart Bleach once it officially became part of Toonami.

It also helps that Naruto has a shorter amount of episodes than One Piece has. It's still going to take them a few years to air through the series, even if they stop before the filler arcs start, but I think it's more manageable to have that series airing on a weekly block than One Piece starting off from episode one when it would take much longer to get to new material.

That comic about TOM sounds pretty cool and should be interesting to read through.

I have to ask why you think One Piece moves slowly early on. In the beginning we were actually getting 3-4 chapters a week while these days, it's only one.

Well I'm ecstatic about One Piece joining Toonami.

Pretty cool that they have new animation, a new logo coming and really cool that they have a new comic coming.

Also neat that they're playing EVA 1.1, and interesting that they're doing it from 1AM-3:30AM rather than pre-empting Bleach or Naruto.

It seems smart. They know movies don't always go well and they're keeping their strong lead-ins there to help it any way they possibly can. Especially with zero promotion on-air.

I wonder if they're hoping that viewers seeing "Rebuild of Evangelion 1.1" pop up in the "Now, Next, Later" bump during Bleach will be enough to get people to stick around. Both Bleach and Naruto have been doing well so maybe they don't want to pre-empt those shows yet.

Well, that and they probably worked it out last minute with FUNimation.

Whoa. The new Tom appear to have the Big O's arms. As for One Piece it would have been better on a weekday run rather Saturdays. Oh well maybe they change their minds later on before the show premiers.

So that's it. Toonami finally has the Big 3 in one block.

Wow, only about a year into the new block, and we're already getting a new Absolution and TOM. I'm not a huge fan of the new design; seems pretty dull compared to TOM 3. Looking forward to an official explanation behind Tom's design...er, "shifts" over the past few years or so.

Also, One Piece on Toonami, baby! I had a feeling it would come eventually. It just feels so right on that block.

Whoah. One Piece. That is huge. If they start with episode 1, I'll watch.

As for Evangelion....its pre-empting Soul Eater and Titan? :(

Evangelion is pre-empting Soul Eater, Thundercats, Titan, Eureka 7 AND GXP. It is quite a bit of their shows, but since it's a birthday special kind of deal, it's okay. I'm not familiar with Evangelion, but it should be an interesting experiment to see if they can do movie nights every once in awhile.

In a way, to me, this new TOM looks like he's a teenager (via spoiler pics), where the one we still have feels like he's in his 20s, but I do like the design. Heh, would be great if somehow they made a market for those things. Would be cool to have a novelty figurine.

I have all sorts of possibilities in what they could do with the new absolution w/ TOM alone, while keeping in mind they'll need budget stuff, but going back to ideas, wonder if well get more than the main room and the game review room. For example, I recall October 2001, when Toonami streamed 4 DBZ episodes on Saturday afternoons, the promo they made was him going down a hallway with a random room and a few monitors.

Basically what I'm saying is, I wonder if we'll see most of the new absolution's interior. No, I wouldn't expect much right away, but in due time.

One thing I didn't add and didn't think about in my previous post about the new absolution/TOM is the new logo, which will also fit right in. They most likely wouldn't use those current Toonami ID bumpers as long as they're coming up with a new logo, so perhaps they've already made a # with the new designs. Seems logical enough

All I can say about this wonderful news is, THAT I CALLED IT! I knew it was only a matter of time until would appear again on Toonami. It was the most logical next step for the block to take. Ask for the Rebuild of Evangelion 1.1, will it's squeals follow it? 3.3 just came out last November and 4.4 still has yet to debut in Japanese theaters. Not sure what to think of the new Tom design until I see it in motion.

Evangelion on Toonami for the first time since the infamous "Giant Robot Week."

Since then, the series has had a full run on Adult Swim, and last night's Soul Eater even had a few crucifix-shaped explosions go unedited. I think we can trust them now.

They said at the panel this isn't a proper movie night of any kind, and just a special thing for the birthday party. So they said there is no need to treat this a experiment, it's just for fun like April Fools.
