"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

This leaves me conflicted. On one hand it's a good pick up and One Piece is a good show. On the other, it's One Piece and it's neverending. It's just another long running show that's going to take up space. And it's so dang slow for once a week thing. I just think we could get shorter series coughTigerandBunnycough at least until Bleach is done.

Yes this is an issue I have aswell. I LOVE one piece, but one thing i have actually liked about toonami is the variety of different shows it's been able to give us; I actually liked that they haven't been able to replay all the series they've aired because it gave them an excuse to change things up and gives us something like we've never seen before. It made toonami feel like it was always airing something fresh. What i don't like about the epic long shows is that they will take up those time slots FOREVER.... Bleach, Naruto and One piece will take up the first three slots with all their other aquisitions being pushed back to no ealier than 1:30am ... and the closer you get to to 3:00am the more it seems to hurt the show as there are not as many viewers up that late. Heck it makes the possibility of movie nights even hard since you want to get in those shonens first before the movie, which means the movies have to start even later.

I kinda would not want them to include yet another epic long series unless they were able to get an extra hour to their time... and even then i would want those epic series mixed in with the shorter series so we don't have the same exact 3 shows ALWAYS leading the line up. Keep the epic shows but at the same time give the line up the ability to change. I think it would keep things feeling fresh.

Given how many false starts One Piece has had on American TV, I hope that they choose a later arc to start from. I guess it would be alright if they picked up where Toonami last left off, but Water Seven seems like the best starting point to me, since that's where the series transitions to widescreen. Not to mention that the rest of Skypiea is pretty inconsequential as far as canon arcs in that show go.

Yes one of my fears is that one piece will get a false start... if they start from the beginning with their once a week airings i feel like a lot of viewers will be turned off by the series and not give it chance later on when it gets really good. Honestly, i feel like One piece isn't that good of a fit for a late night toonami; always felt like a show more at home at an earlier time. Like above, i would rather save one piece for when toonami had more time and started earlier and ran into late night.

Frankly to be even MORE ideal, i would prefer One piece air everyday monday through friday like DBZ kai did on Nick so that they could quickly plow through the early episodes and get to the better parts before slowing things done by going one episode a week.

I also have some mixed feelings about starting later in the series... I actually dropped the anime and stayed only with the manga because i feel like that the later the series goes on the more terrible the pacing gets. Episodes drag on so much that it can be kind boring to watch... one chapter of manga was not meant to translate to one episode of anime. I so easily get bored out of my mind because of how slow the pacing can be... heck i almost wish they DID make more filler episodes just so that canon episodes would be better paced. One piece is a series that could desperately use the DBZ Kai treatment to get rid its terrible pacing. It be truly amazing if Toonami actually had the budget to edit down the episodes so that they would be better paced. Viewers and fans would enjoy it more I'm sure.

Though i do hope toonami atleast decides to skip weak filler arcs... with how far ahead funimation is with dubbing it should be a problem for them to skip the episodes nobody cares about (i hope toonami does the same for Naruto and its infamous filler seasons... nobody likes them, so just skip them). Really it will take long enough to tell the canon story as it is much less have to spend even MORE time on filler whose only reason for existing was to WASTE time.

I have to ask why you think One Piece moves slowly early on. In the beginning we were actually getting 3-4 chapters a week while these days, it's only one.

Different kind of slow. The pacing of the early episodes are fine, but the action and story elements are a tad weak. Its not as interesting and entertaining to watch as later stories which is why people feel its something of a "slow" starter. Its starts out mediocre but gets really good later on... However because of One Piece's length, "later on" is like 30 episodes in. Though opinion varies from fan to fan, i feel like the series doesn't really pick up until the Arlong arc when we are dealing with Nami's tragic backstory and the awesome fights that that arc brings. Some might go earlier with Don Krieg, while others go later with Louge town, or the grand line

But yes, in later episodes, episode pacing becomes a HUGE problem for one piece.

By the end of the year One Piece will have more episodes than the entirety of the Dragon Ball franchise (and that includes Kai) ... What a poor pick for a weekly block to air. Even doubling up on episodes that's going to be years, and years that could've gone to shorter shows.

Eh, why do I care, I live in Canada.

I'm looking forward to hearing more details on this One Piece TV deal. I wonder if it's possible Toonami will have the rights all the way up through episodes that haven't been dubbed yet?

I can understand the conflicting feelings over One Piece coming on the block. While I'm happy to see that it will be on TV again, I would have preferred it to be included after an expansion, which I don't think is the case based on the announcement, but I could be mistaken. One Piece has a ton of episodes and it will take a long time to get to where the Japanese version is right now. At least Bleach and Naruto have end dates in sight, although it will take awhile to get through Naruto even if they do skip the filler arcs. Airing the series every weekday would be a big help just to get through more of the episodes sooner.

Still, I'm glad to see that it will be on the block and while seeing three slots locked up for quite some time is a shame when that limits them as to how many other new shows they can get, at least the popularity of these three popular shonen series will help keep the block going and give them more of a budget. I kind of wish that they had gone for One Piece instead of getting Naruto, but getting both series started off before Bleach ends is probably going to help the block out more in the long run. I'm personally leading more towards starting somewhere other than the first episode. While the first couple of arcs are entertaining enough, I don't think that the series really starts being good until the Arlong arc. It would be probably better to see a recap of the backstories for the main characters, instead of starting from the beginning, just so that we can get to the new material sooner.

The Jump Big 3 on Toonami? I never thought I would see the day.
Does this mean Toei gave up trying to get One Piece on a network aimed at younger audiences?

When did they ever actually say that they were trying that?

My guess is Toei hopefully won't demand that FUNimation go back and insert 4kids terms into all of their non Season 3 episodes of One Piece. Neon Alley didn't have to do so, and if we're getting a fresh start then there are no continuity issues. The opening and editing themes might have to be cut down due to time restraints, too. While Toonami didn't have to do so in 2007-2008, that was also taking into consideration of all of the edits done for content reasons.

Yes, they have. With the Cable rights being now Toonami Property, it cannot air on the other cable kids networks. Unless Toei gives Broadcast TV Ratings to Vortexx on The CW.

well TOM5 looks great.i cant wait to see what the finally version of the absolution will look like along with the new look. Looks like TOM 5 has great detail kinda like TOM 4 i am also very exited for the comic . OH AND ONE PIECE<3 hopefully they will start @ season 4 its got a good recap and well its super epic

Well, that's to be expected. I suppose it'll stay at 1:30, though I'd like that and Titan to move below Eureka. Well, whatever replaces Tenchi 5 weeks after ThunderCats ends will most definitely be the last show in the first 2 hours though, and I guess whether Eureka moves above them or not depends on how they'll fare in reruns.

On the subject of where the episode count starts with "One Piece", I feel that starting at Season 4 or what have you is really only beneficial to people who are already fans of the series. Not starting at episode one defeats the purpose of putting it on a mainstream cable outlet, which would be new exposure for the property. As far as playing catch-up, well we already know when Season 5 is coming out. If you want newer dub episodes, they'll be readily available anyway.

Honestly, I do think it could work if handled properly. It's not like most people watching Toonami aren't already familiar with One Piece. It was one of the most requested shows after all, according to DeMarco. Season 4 is actually a pretty nice place to jump into the middle, and I'm sure Toonami could spice up a nice recap promo like they did for Bleach. They could even promote new viewers to watch the earlier episodes using OnePieceOfficial.com/Hulu or purchasing the DVDs.

I understand the legit reasons for defending why One Piece should start at episode 1, but at this point I feel like it's a bit late to do so at a once a week pace. It feels like a bit of a risk to have to wait 4 more years for episodes that haven't aired on US TV before, regardless of how butchered the 4Kids dub was. The newer episodes need more attention, especially if we want to see FUNimation continue to dub past where they are now and it could increase DVD sales for those episodes. I'll still support One Piece and Toonami by watching either way, but there really is a good argument for both sides. Seems like the fanbase is pretty evenly split on where to start the series.

The problem with starting at episode one is that it would take years to get to episodes that haven't aired on TV yet and even longer to get to where Japan is right now. If they were airing episodes on weekdays as well, maybe starting from episode one would be more manageable, but I think that people can jump into the middle of the series without too much of a problem, especially if they did recaps on the Straw Hats' backstory to help everyone get on the same page for the most part.

I'm not surprised that Thundercats is getting another run. It has been doing really well in ratings and it probably costs them little to nothing to air it.

Agreed. Even though it was the 4kids dub I watched, I understand the start of the series and how the cast were met up until the FUNimation dub's final appearance, so I'd be more thrilled in watching it from where it left off. If they do start from the beginning though, I myself will watch just to see it uncut and the FUNi dub

From what I understand, is it costs nothing for them to play that or SBT, since they're original productions. Can't supply a source though to back it up (tumblr I want to believe, though). I haven't heard anything about if they do have to pay some change or whatnot

well i was at the adutlswim board ( yes i know, im brave) and they are really upset about one piece. Yes its long and yes it takes up a slot but its no big deal its not like your wasting your time its a great show and when bleach ends boom one piece is your new bleach PERFECT. as for when i think it should i think season 4 is good start cause its super epic and will catch the casuals eyes, because after all thats who we need for one piece and toonami to grow

I'm just watching the panel video and...the very first question(from the fans who couldn't be there) is from me! :p Looks like the Absolution flies with love and a reactor..
