I guess starting from Season 3 or 4 would be alright.
I assume most of the built-in fanbase is already aware of what happens in the first three seasons.

I only worry for the new fans this may attract, but hey, I guess if they have access to a stable internet connection and know how to find legal avenues for past episodes and/or where to buy the DVDs...
Maybe Toonami could do like they did with Bleach and make some kind of recap promo for the characters or something.

Either way, happy as a clam it's even coming back to American TV at all.

That would be awesome. Toonami could definitely use another hour, especially with One Piece coming to the block.

I'm also glad that they aren't planning on starting right off with episode one. That might make it difficult for new fans to jump in, but with those episodes legally available online and DVD sets, I don't think it would be too bad. They might start off in a place that could be accessible to new viewers as well.

The One Piece Brand Manager also said that they are looking to put One Piece on Netflix and other Video on Demand services, which could be a big help. You can't say FUNi/Toei haven't provided various alternate ways new fans can use to watch the earlier episodes. There's also Hulu/OnePieceOfficial, Neon Alley, and the DVDs.

You can technically also count Bleach, Brotherhood, GITS and Bebop. While it's true they were simply carried over from ASA, that doesn't change that fact.

It was the middle of Season 3 (Skypiea). CN abruptly took it off in March 2008, literally right after we met the Season's main villain. A shame, Eneru is amazing.

As I said, he never actually said it was definite. The Toonami guys didn't necessarily want the time they were looking at starting it revealed to the public before they decided, but they're not exactly lying by saying they aren't sure when it will be airing just yet. I think April is still a definite possibility.

Children who watch One Piece in Japan have not seen the majority of the show. I'm sure casual Adult Swim viewers will survive if they never see the first 200 or so, and it's all online if they ever feel the need to get caught up.

Sorry if I've confused anyone (I've altered the link title to be more accurate), but it is true that no one has actually said that One Piece will definitely be airing in April. Yes, it is true that they are still deciding, but the Funimation rep from the One Piece podcast indicated that April was a possibility. It could start then, or it could start in May, or perhaps even later. As a diehard fan who would very much love to see One Piece on Toonami, I'm rooting for April.

I don't imagine that would do much good as far as getting people acquainted with the series. The Alabasta arc itself takes place a good ways into the series and the film wouldn't provide any real back story or insight into the characters. Heck, the Alabasta movie does a pretty poor job of setting itself up as is.

Personally, I'm kind of conflicted as to when I would want One Piece to start airing on Toonami.

For the sake of new/casual viewers and building up ratings, I think it would be great to start at the beginning and get everyone acquainted with the characters/events of the series. Also, Funi's dub of the earlier episodes have never been aired (and for that matter, the Little Garden arc has never been aired).

Starting from where they left off in Skypiea? Hmm, curiously they actually did air the remainder of Skypiea in Australia, so I'm not sure how that would factor, if at all, into the American airing. But in any case, it's been five years since One Piece last aired on Toonami, so it would be really weird to start it right in the middle of an arc.

Davy Back Fight/Water 7? As a huge One Piece fan who owns all the Funi DVDs up through the Rainbow Mist arc, I'd love it if they started at Water 7. It's a fantastic arc and one of the series' finest, and I've love to hear the dubs of the all the characters that appear in it. Davy Back Fight, though, is already fairly divisive among the fanbase, and the anime bogs it down with filler.

Hmm, actually G8 may not be a bad place to start either since its supposed to be one of the best filler arcs.

Here's another con for starting One Piece at episode 1. Say new viewers do tune in and get hooked. Who's to say many of them wouldn't get impatient and use those alternate legal ways to watch the first 3 Seasons in a shorter amount of time? If a good number of viewers did that, then I'm sure many of them would eventually get bored at Toonami's once a week pacing if they started at the beginning. Those new fans would likely wish they were airing newer episodes just like many of the current fans do. Four years is a long time to rely on their patience.

You can use the argument that we would be way too behind compared to Japan either way, but look at it this way. Starting at episode 1 would put us roughly 13-14 years behind the current Japanese broadcast, and with no signs of ending anytime soon. Would casual viewers honestly have that kind of patience? You could also argue that DBZ aired just fine on Toonami just fine when it had been a long time since Japa first aired it, but that had the luxury of a weekday run.

My point stands that starting One Piece from the middle would benefit both new and old fans in the long run.

I don't know man, they don't seem particularly worried about viewers leaving for other sources in regards to Naruto, Soul Eater, Eureka 7, Samurai 7, Casshern Sins, Tenchi GXP or anything else. So I don't think they're that concerned about people watching One Piece on Toonami initially and losing patience. Maybe they should be more concerned but it just seems like they aren't.

Aside from Naruto, which they only seem to be running because DXD still has the rights to Shippuden, all of those other shows are fairly short compared to One Piece's over 600 episodes. My point was more so concerning long term consequences with airing One Piece from episode 1.

Another minor reason why I'd rather see Season 4 is that I'd rather not watch the earlier episodes in good ol' Turner stretchovision. While this only applies to the HD feed, it still looks bad.

Guh. Clearly, none of you are in the position of having only seen one episode (the first). If you were, this possibility would annoy you to death. No one has time to watch 200 episodes online just to catch up!

So you all tell me: if they start where they left off, is it fine if I miss that many shows, or will I be confused as heck?

You can always just pace yourself and take it slow even when its airing on Toonami.

Fun fact about One Piece: The first 200 episodes or so are more about the adventure than knowing every.single.plot.point. Does big stuff happen? Sure! But its allll brought back to the table again through flashbacks to the point where..everybody who watched it weekly most likely forgot unless they are big fans.

The reason why I feel starting at 207-208ish would be the best choice is because 207-230 wields plenty of episodes where you can get to know the cast and understand their personalities. 230+ starts a huge story arc that..actually moves the plot in a very driven way. In the long run, the Toonami crew are better off starting at early Foxy Pirates-->Water 7 than pushing it all back.
