Searchin' My Soul
This is an episode that I enjoy purely for the fact that Lobo and Superman's voice actors really play well off one another. While watching though, as I did today (so it's funny the talkback should resurface so coincidentally), I found myself bored by the time the two were fighting off the other aliens in the woods. On paper, the story follows through well with all the characters and dynamics, but there's nothing really all that interesting about how it comes together.
For example, why were they fighting in an earth-like woods to begin with? If the preserver's ship collected beings from across the universe, why not design a more visually dynamic space for them to clash in? And I'm not talking about the dodo sanctuary, which was strangely located within the Earth-like forest.
I just found it odd that the Preserver had small chambers with creatures in them, and then a giant Earth forest space. It seemed at the start of the story that he organized things by having one chamber be the environment for each creature. So why the big playground, especially only if Earth creatures could use it? Does a Dodo need that much room?
I also found it really odd that suddenly there was a big ring with a Rhino directly in front of Superman's enclosure when I don't remember there being one in the previous episode.
Finally, when Superman and Lobo fall into a pit and fight a snake (with the same design as a snake that escaped from the Phantom Zone, I believe) why not just fly right out of it? Why bother fighting the snake? It couldn't possibly climb up and out of the pit, not from the way it was depicted. It just seemed more like a way to eat up time.
All things considered, this is one of the more boring episodes for my money. The action just didn't excite me, and it felt longer than it was. I was nice, however, to see Lobo throw his chain around. Quite cool.
