Unconventional or unpopular opinions you have (re: animation)

And why not, here's probably an unpopular opinion: I think the 2012 series is better than both of them! (season 5 aside)

That said, I do have great nostalgia for the '87 series, and some episodes still hold up comedically.

Eh, the 2012 series is okay, I guess I didn’t mind it, but I still much prefer the 2003 animated series which is still criminally underrated IMO.

I just got through watching Titan AE for the first time in 15 or 20 years and I think I like it better than Treasure Planet.

I could never get into Steven Universe either. I know that a lot of people love the show and more power to them, but personally, I gave up on SU after about 6 episodes because it found to be boring and too slow moving.

Likewise, I know that a lot of people enjoy(ed) Hey, Arnold, but I found the tonal shifts to be rather jarring. It wasn't funny enough to be a comedy, but not serious enough to be a drama. A little consistency is all I'm asking for. It also didn't help that the show was so predictable that you could bet off of it.
So, what are slice of life shows that do a better job at managing the comedy and drama balance if Hey Arnold didn't work?
As for "tackling serious issues in a way that kids would understand", I never needed nor wanted that from my cartoons; I grew up during the 70s and 80s, so that's what afterschool specials were for.
Is it a bad thing for cartoons to try to prove they aren't just "kiddy filler" and that animation isn't just for kids and can be appealing to older audiences too?

It can still do that without necessarily tackling serious issues.

As someone who really likes Hey Arnold (seasons 3-5, the first 2 are just okay), I always found that comedy was its main strength over that (which is why fan favorites like Pigeon Man, Helga on the Couch, and Arnold's Christmas I never really cared for).

Thought I'd throw my own one in since I've been responding to others:

I don't mind Disney Channel and Nickelodeon airing live action sitcoms a lot. At the end of the day, it isn't as if this is nothing new for both networks. Disney Channel didn't even start doing animated originals (aside from doing 13 episode sneak previews of a few Disney TVA shows from 1988-93) until 2001, 18 years after it started in 1983 and 16 years after Disney started producing their own TV shows in 1985. Nickelodeon also didn't have the Nicktoons until 12 years into its existence in 1991, with a lot of live action originals before that. Even during their praised 90s golden age, they had a lot of live action shows for every Nicktoon they had.

Yeah how some Disney Channel animated shows and Nicktoons were treated sometimes sucked (depending on the show), but let's not take it out on the live action originals that are just as important to the channel's identity as the animated originals, especially since they were never meant as 24/7 animation channels like Cartoon Network.

If anything, Nickelodeon more or less retiring from live action originals (aside from NFL on Slimetime) is showing how empty the channel is getting since how they're mostly just airing SpongeBob outside the Nick Jr hours. Yes there's less live action, but that doesn't automatically make for better variety and does the opposite.

It is kinda unfair to think either channel should be dropping the live action originals, when they can all easily coexist together.

Feel free to question or respond to this if anyone has something to say about this.

I agree, especially since the pendulum swang back this decade and now it's the live-action shows that are getting shafted (this also happened with Nick in the early 2000s, which kinda stunk since that era was was weaker than the late 90s and late 2000s in terms of Nicktoons).

No, it always stunk regardless of what show was getting poorly treated, because all shows deserve fair treatment.

What I meant by that was how Disney Channel and Nicktoons shows varied by treatment where sometimes you'd get well treated shows (outside the sponge) like Jimmy Neutron, Phineas & Ferb, Kim Possible, Sanjay & Craig (in the sense of it at least airing all 3 seasons and 60 episodes on the main Nick channel), Big City Greens, Gravity Falls, Avatar the Last Airbender, Danny Phantom, and Kiff and then you'd get shows screwed over hard like Invader Zim, My Life as a Teenage Robot, ChalkZone, most of the Nicktoons post-2006 (aside from Loud House, Sanjay & Craig, and to some extent TMNT 2012), Dave the Barbarian, Tron Uprising, Milo Murphy's Law, Billy Dilley, Molly McGee, and Moon Girl. I agree that no show deserves poor treatment, regardless of quality.

Watched Toy Story 5 today. It felt like another awesome escapade for the characters, while also they taught an important lesson: it's ok to be different, especially if you still like to play with toys. Lily turned from an antagonist to a hero of the movie, because of realising exactly that.
