FLCL could be getting a remake.

Count me in the camp of "already said what it needed to say" if not outright "perfect in every way." It was the best of the post-Eva wave of teenage angst allegory anime by a long shot in just about every facet - storytelling, use of metaphor/visual symbolism, animation quality, storyboarding...

Crunchyroll's New Direction - Streaming Anime with Support of Japanese Companies

I hope that picking up a sentai series helps open the door to more J-Drama. There's some real gems that'd be nice to have officially over, even if only in a streaming capacity.

FCI/Pony Canyon enters the US Video Market.

I kind of hope they don't have Free! s.1 since I don't want it split up, and I don't think it'll get a solid chance in the US split up, but I'd buy a sub-only Kodocha s.2 set in a heart beat, even it was a bit spendy. That said, Funi's suspicious lack of Free! s.1 makes me think this could be a...

    Assassination Classroom (PreAir Discussions)

I think this may be the first Jump adaption I've ever really looked forward to, if only because the pacing is brisk (unlike the long arcs that drive most Jump works.) I definitely hope the anime goes well since it does wildly succeed in manga form as an action comedy. Done right, this could be a...

Toonzone Anime of the Month (July 2014) - Kill la Kill

Absolutely my favorite series from 2013, and that's saying something since that year had a good number of top notch titles in all genres. Trigger is definitely the most passionate studio in the game, and I hope they never lose their way. ;)

Studio Trigger's "Kill la Kill" Talkback (Spoilers)

After final scene & preview for 22, we know that they're definitely going pull out everything they have for the finale. It's gonna be nuts, and I can't wait to see it in action. My only curiosity at this point will be whether KLK will have rewatch value. Twists and unexpected results have been...

Studio Trigger's "Kill la Kill" Talkback (Spoilers)

After episode 19, I fully expect the show will again Mako-speech its way back to the status-quo, albeit with an even more super-powered Ryuko/Senketsu now that they're aware of the true nature of Ryuko's existence. I mean, maybe will get an episode of Shinji-esque angst, but considering...

Studio Trigger's "Kill la Kill" Talkback (Spoilers)

Yeah, 17 shows this show always finds another way of surprising the audience, and yeah, I actually didn't expect it to go down like that. I mean, it makes sense in retrospect - Satsuki wanted Ryuko to be their not to be killed, but to help end her mom, and the brutal fights were training. It's...

Studio Trigger's "Kill la Kill" Talkback (Spoilers)

The fights this episode were just sick. I mean, the scale just keeps expanding, and the pace is unheard of for something so hot-blooded. Plus, I have to think the whole bit with chopping up senketsu and collecting the pieces was also a little call back to the P&S finale just for show.

Studio Trigger's "Kill la Kill" Talkback (Spoilers)

On Episode 10: Just realized all of the big flashbacks are in 4:3, as if they were actually animated in the past. Details like that really show how much thought is going into this show, even when it also being as base and rowdy as it can muster. Very clever. The Lain-esque suited, bald thugs are...

"Space Dandy" News & Discussion Thread

Looking over the music and production staff, and it's hard to imagine cramming more talent on one show. It'll be interesting to watch Watanabe bring that all together. Definitely feels like a go big or home moment for anime in the west though. If this isn't at least as notable as Cowboy Bebop, I...

Studio Trigger's "Kill la Kill" Talkback (Spoilers)

Normally fan service in the levels here would be a turn off for me, except in the hands of Trigger, it's works. In fact, paired with the on-going commentary about Nazi regimes and the use of military derived uniforms for students, the whole work reads as a reaction to Japanese conservatism. If...

Didn't happen to see this interview linked in thread: Interview: Shinichiro Watanabe - Anime News Network But he talks some more about Space Dandy and their is some good info on Kids on the Slope (which when I think about it, Sentai sure is taking their sweet time with - I want to buy that on...

    C&C - Kick-Heart [8/31]

Terribly let down that I missed this as I am admitted Masaaki Yuasa fanboy. That said, I can see why his work is polarizing. Though expecting even more traditionally artsy anime fans are gonna have their expectations challenged. Anyway, I hope this both opens up the door for more Yuasa...

Pretty Cure is Acquired by Saban Worldwide....

I'm not even saying they have to do that work. In fact, I fully agree that as merchandising-centric companies, they shouldn't, especially since as it stands the entertainment side can be a drag on the merch side (4kids was doing great with pure merch lines and getting pounded trying to find...

Toonzone Talkback: Studio Ghibli Announces Hayao Miyazaki’s Retirement From Feature Films

I think Miyazaki is going to end up pulling Anno fully into Ghibli once Anno finishes Rebuild given this announcement. They seem like they are kindred spirits in a really weird way (very similar views on modern otaku culture, but very different views on Japanese identity/nationalism.) Also...

"Space Dandy" News & Discussion Thread

If keeps the energy of the trailer up, it's gonna be a hit. The fan service may make it a slightly tricky sell, but so long as the trailer is as bad as it gets, I think this is a slam dunk for US TV. I feel it's exactly what the new Toonami needs.

Pretty Cure is Acquired by Saban Worldwide....

Well, if they are gonna leave money on the table like that in 2013, they'll eventually go under/become irrelevant like all the other companies that did that in the past. The market's made it pretty clear that the companies that embrace the fandom tend to live, the ones that don't are actually so...

When did ANN "change" in your opinion?

Changed the thread title to something way less incendiary. Eh, considering ANN does anime streaming (albeit in a partnership with Crunchyroll for the most part these days,) pays at least some their writing staff (or so I've heard from ANN reporters at cons) and still maintains one of best...

"Sailor Moon Crystal" Prerelease News & Discussion Thread (Spoilers)

Yeah, however the show looks, I hope it does kind of take after those designs. Modernized and cleaned up a bit, but still very classic and identifiable. Oh, and I hope the animations the best parts of the Cure series, and never cheats on anything. This show should be an easy global sell, so...

"Space Dandy" News & Discussion Thread

Space Dandy is probably my most anticipated anime series at this point. It looks like it'll be a lot of fun, and Watanabe is a much a master of comedy as drama. Even if it's reverse Bebop, I see no problem with 20 episodes of Mushroom Sambas, Toys in the Attics and Cowboy Funks. If anything...

Who decides on a weekly or monthly series?

Well, the author can certainly aim for a magazine, but each major publishing house handles a lot of different magazines, so a pitch may start in one spot and end up in another, especially if it seems like the manga-ka aimed incorrectly but an editor thinks the pitch is still interesting. I also...

DMP strike deal to publish Tezuka manga in English

I trust the people at DMP to handle Tezuka right, though that may be because I suspect that the same people who handled the Tezuka kickstarters will keep tabs on this, even though one of them is now mainly working at DelRey/Random House. I know they love Tezuka's work, and I don't think they'd...

    "Little Witch Academia" Talkback

Honestly, I would even just shoot for a 13 episode series so long as that translates to splitting the budget in half. Drops the kickstarter goal, and probably makes it easier to find a TV slot/sponsor in Japan. That said, Trigger definitely is the studio to watch at this point. I hope their...

Who is to distribute Code Geass now that Bandai Entertainment is gone?

I'd lean on FUNimation being the favorite unless Sentai has deeper pockets than they let on, or its cheaper than one would think to pick up. If it's cheap, there is room for Nozomi to come in and swipe it.

    C&C - Loiter Squad - Season Two Talkback [3/10]

Have I been the only person watching and enjoying this? I think this season has definitely managed to up the quality of the skits, and it's been fun to see that bits featuring the musical side of the OF crew (Mike G, Earl,) and various guests (Blake from Workaholics) aren't going to be one off bits.

Ghost In The Shell Arise coming 2013

I caught a bit of those vibes, but I'd add a little Armitage and even Akira to that palette as well. The backgrounds and color scheme also throw off a slightly but nicely late 80s/early 90s OVA flavor. Generally though, I'm looking forward to this recasting aside. That hard boiled cyberpunk...

    "Serial Experiments Lain" Remaster Talkback

Videophile opinions may not matter to everyone, but I was pretty surprised to see such obnoxious banding on a Bluray release when I was watching it. It was unexpected on a release like this one. Can a fan influence Western Anime companies.

Depends on what we mean by influence and a fan. I mean, I personally think it's a stretch to for me to say I am only a fan (casual animation journalist is a better fit I think), and that I have influence (I just review DVDs). However, when Funimation linked my review for Princess Jellyfish on...
