Studio Trigger's "Kill la Kill" Talkback (Spoilers)

Episode 18

Good job to anyone who guessed that reveal. Ryuko's hair stripe being a Life Fiber? That works for me. And that also sets things up for both sisters to have equal reason to take down Ragyo, which I assume they'll do together at the end of the series. Really great material from Satsuki all around as well.

Also good to see the massive titles still being very real fixtures in this world.

Ah, it just occurred to me that the scissors were probably created to defeat Ragyo, so Ryuuko will probably need to obtain the other half before that can happen.

Yeah, scissors would corral any pesky loose life fibers that would get away from a sword.

Yep, air of people called it, Ryuuko and Satsuki are sisters. Crazy. I'm also glad that they're pretty much both on the same side. I mean it makes sense, no powerful antagonist appears that early and then NOT be on the side of good later on in the series.

And just because it's adorable:

Episode #18

Well, that escalated quickly. Then again, we all knew Ragyo Kiryuin wasn't going to go down that easily.

Some highlights (in spoiler tags for those who haven't watched it yet):

- Satsuki secretly hated her mother Ragyo and was opposed to Life Fibers ever since she was born. She had only been a "loyal subordinate" to her mother as a ruse to the day she could finally take her down.
- In a flashback, Satsuki's parents, Ragyo and Souichiro, were experimenting on Life Fibers by surgically placing them into their own children. When an infant Satsuki proved to be incompatible, Ragyo used her next child as a test subject .... and failed, dumping the baby in the process.
- Ragyo uses her special threads to turn Satsuki's soldiers (outside of the Four Devas) into puppets to use against her daughter, and also used it to control Ryuko as well. That is until Ryuko forcibly pulls the Life Fibers out of her own brain (Do not attempt, kids).
- Ryuko versus Nui (Part III): Unlike the last time when she was "stripped of the will to fight", Ryuko had the upper hand against the Grand Couturier with both her and Senketsu in perfect sync with each other.
- The Original Life Fiber Awakens: Efforts by Satsuki's subordinates to neutralize COVERS proved to be futile, and they wind up getting attacked in the process.
- "Do you wanna know how I got these scars, Satsuki?": As expected, Ragyo is a host of COVERS, having placed Life Fibers into herself. That makes killing her that much more difficult, especially for Satsuki.
- Satsuki is easily defeated by Ragyo, who then dons Junketsu as she throws her daughter away into the crowd, before revealing the Kamui's true power.
- [strike]"Isshin, you are NOT the father!": That's right, Ryuko. You're adopted. But that wasn't the biggest shocker of the episode.[/strike] As Ragyo reveals when she rips out Ryuko's heart, she is actually "the newborn daughter she threw away" and was thoguht to have been dead after the Life Fiber experiment "failed". Which means that all of this time, Ryuko had been fighting against her biological elder sister.
I said it last week, and I will say it again this week:

Things look dire at this point, but next week looks to be more focused on the fighting efforts of Four Devas (even though the preview doesn't hint too much).

Also, this happened on Twitter today (wait until after you've watched the episode first).

WOW! Finally watched this morning. Whatever you wanna say about KLK, you can't say it ever has a dull moment. Ragyo is a true monster. I was sitting there watching the flashback like...did I really just see that? I'm now truly interested in how Satsuki and Ryuuko interact now that the truth has been brought out, especially on Satsuki's end. Looking forward to seeing how all of this unfolds.

PS: That's an adorable/funny pic above.

And there they go, just casually revealing that Soichiro Kiryuin and Isshin Matoi are in fact one and the same.

Episode #19

Chaos ensued this week, as well as another surprise reveal. The madness never ends, folks.

Highlights:

- COVERS has taken over Japan, with the bodiless suits devouring humans in the process including Mako. In a last ditch effort, Satsuki blows up Honnouji Academy.
- The Four Devas all survived the onslaught and have now become members of Nudist Beach, all while fighting the Life Fibers and trying to evacuate as many people as possible.
- Ryuko survived; however, she is still bothered by the reveal that Ragyo is her mother. Meanwhile, Satsuki has been imprisoned in a cage by Ragyo (ALfheim Online, much?), who is planning to use her daughter as a guinea pig for her latest development - an ultimate Kamui more powerful than Senketsu and Junketsu?
- Isshin Matoi = Souichiro Kiryuin: As it turns out, Souichiro survived an assassination attempt on his life by Ragyo's henchmen. Afterwards, he changed his look and identity, becoming Isshin Matoi. So basically, this has all been a twisted family feud with father against mother, and daughter against daughter.
- Gamagoori uses a new weapon developed by Iori that extracts humans out of the COVERS suits, and Mako is rescued as a result.
- Ryuko Enraged: After being rudely awakened by harps, Ryuko goes on a killing spree of sorts against the suits with her scissor blade in hand all while declaring to Senketsu that she will never wear him again. No longer does Ryuko see herself as human, but as a monster infused with Life Fibers.

Apparently, Satsuki may have a couple more tricks up her sleeve, but we'll have to wait until next week to see what happens.

On a side note, all KLK previews from Episode 20 onward will now be web-only, so check AniplexUSA's YouTube channel often.

I don't think I forgot anything else.

Episode #19

Gamagoori's rampage continues. Thoroughly enraged by the loss of Mankanshoku, Gamagoori takes each chance he can get to free her. Meanwhile, Matarou develops a rapport with Jakuzure Nonon. What does this mean for the fate of the Four Heavenly Kings?!

Oh, and Sou'ichirou is Isshin. That was a painful reveal.

The return of bad-touch, too!

Here's something fun to say: naughty nudist ninja Nonon.

And I guess my initial guess about the two main characters' parentage was closer than I thought last week.

I'm truly starting to wonder how this show got away with not being MA on Hulu. I seriously feel horrible for Satsuki, to think that she's been caged up, being molested by that witch for a full month...:ack:
*Loved seeing the team up with Nudist Beach & what remained of Satsuki's forces.
*Dr. Mankanshoku, you'd better check your wife there buddy, lol.
*Mako X Gamagoori stealin' the spotlight
*I loved that the family acknowledged how much Senketsu cares for Ryuuko, which made it all the more devastating that Ryuuko wanted nothing more to do with him. Shocking after the great lengths she's gone for him, but understandable considering how hard her world has been rocked at this point.
*All I know is Ragyo is going to have two VERY POed daughter hunting her down.

Re: Episode #19

Ah, I really like this setup. I love me some FIGHT THA POWA vibes.

Also hilarious comedy from Mikisugi and Sukuyo. And Gamagoori is downright smitten with his Mako-chan.

Really looking forward to seeing how Ryuko ultimately reacts to all this. She's looking pretty badass.

Just in case you needed a reminder that 99% of Japanese hand-drawn animation is still done on paper:

Dem sexy key animation drawings.

After episode 19, I fully expect the show will again Mako-speech its way back to the status-quo, albeit with an even more super-powered Ryuko/Senketsu now that they're aware of the true nature of Ryuko's existence. I mean, maybe will get an episode of Shinji-esque angst, but considering Trigger's pacing so far, it'll probably be resolved in the first 5 minutes of the show.

This show never seems to take a break and I feel this episode went through plot twists and revelations that normally take 3-4 episodes to mull through. Also by this point I think the Mako X Gamagoori shipping is no longer just a theory.

Oh episode 20 is quite an episode.

-Mako does her HALLELUJAH thing and attempts to get Ryuko to make up with Senketsu, but she fails.

-Nui and Ragyo come along in life fiber doppelganger form, challenge Ryuko to come to Honnouji Academy to finish things. Ryuko doesn't listen when everyone tells her it's an obvious trap.

-Meanwhile, the Elite 4 and Nudist Beach decide to take the opportunity to rescue Satsuki.

-We find out that Nui is a life fiber/human hybrid sort of like Ragyo and Ryuko. The difference being that Nui was grown from the Original Life Fiber by Ragyo and is not a natural born human being. In a way, Nui could be seen as Ryuko's younger sister.

-Nui and Ragyo use Junketsu to rewrite Ryuko's memories and turn her to their side. Ryuko is later sent to destroy the Nudist Beach ship and defeats Tsumugu easily.

-Satsuki puts on Senketsu, arms herself with the two fragments of Bakuzan and prefers to fight Ryuko.

-We are now set up for a fight between Satsuki wearing Senketsu and Junketsu wearing Ryuko next week.

Episode #20

Ah, I was waiting for this. The reversal of Kamui! What will we learn about Satsuki through the eyes of Senketsu?!

If I'm recalling correctly Ryuko mentioned before she befriended Mako and her family she was a bully that got into a lot of fights: so I guess the yankī look of Junketsu worn by Ryuko is appropriate.

I wonder if the Nudist beach ship turns out to be more than just a naval vessel.
