I feel like this is definitely a show where people without any prior or deep knowledge of DMC and lore might enjoy it more than those that do, though even on its own terms I think it's at best just solid to average.

The show definitely got Dante's character right and how fun he is as a lead...minus how he seems to take a backseat for most of the season and ends up losing a lot.

For a season where Lady took up so much of the plot focus, I feel like making her curse like a sailor was not the way to endear her to people.

The action was decent but I can see how someone expecting it to be on the same level as the games would be disappointed.

I know from a production standpoint they probably needed the major demons to be CG, but Dante's Devil Trigger being CG kind of threw me off.

Mixing the plot of DMC with actual political allegories was...a choice. Like, I guess it's not surprising considering how political Castlevania could get, but it feels even more out of place in the context of a franchise like DMC.

Johnny Yong Bosch always makes for a fun lead. They got Dante down pretty well. The "He got bored" bit in his file was hilarious. It was surprising how much screen time Lady/Mary took. Didn't realize she was a co-lead but a pretty neat take making her so devout to the government and always turning on Dante lol. Her tactics were entertaining at least like the sports car at the end.

Interesting theme of orphans. Didn't expect an origin story for White Rabbit nor the political allegories/commentary of the war of terror era. Pluto did a way, way, way better take on that. I assumed there would be some religious aspect it but yeah, Baines took it to the next level. "American Idiot" playing when he opens the portal, lol. They played into the early 00s era decent enough.

Lotta f bombs. Lot's of decent action set pieces every episode. Though the airplane one instantly reminded me of IM3. I mean, they even allude to IM, lol. Studio MIR did some A animation aside from the bad CG bits but the problem with Mir is their style gets idk generic after awhile. But c'mon, no no Ebony & Ivory?

Wow, they really went 9/11 with the ending. Pretty big gamble to end it with DARKCOM winning, putting Dante on ice, confiscating the sword of Sparda and the amulet, and teasing Vergil. Seems this series will be less beholden to the source material and goes in its own direction with the threat of Vergil and Mundus and well, Dr. Arkham won't be a factor. But seems like they loosely adapted the Devil May Cry 3 manga instead of the actual games.

I'm on the fence about a season 2. Certainly room for improvement. Not as bad as Tomb Raider or Skull Island but not as good as Castlevania. So in the middle.

But the Raccoon City mention... if the Castlevania crew got to cook with a Resident Evil series, that would be awesome. Also chuckled with the Mega Man figure on the dash.

So this show is like the DMC game? Okay, but the other games are better.

"Review: “Devil May Cry” Season One: A Fun, But Flawed Video Game Adaption"

Devil-May-Cry.jpg

"There have been several successful adaptions of video games into animation, from Castlevania on Netflix to the Super Mario Bros. movie. The Devil May Cry animated series on Netflix is the latest video game adaption into animation and it is a fun adaption with a lot of flaws.

This season starts off kind of weak. Dante, the main hero, comes off as a stereotypical “cool loser’’, a hero with some cool action scenes who sometimes comes off as a doofus for comedic effect. I think the attempts at awkward humor with Dante in the first couple of episodes are rather unfunny. Dante is paired up with Enzo Ferino, his handler/merc employer, who is a rather unfunny comic relief character. Perhaps the most grating character in the early episodes of Devil May Cry is Mary Arkham AKA ‘’Lady’’, who is a tough-as-nails anti-demon warrior. Lady seems to swear every 7th word, making her seem very unserious. Frankly, the novelty of having characters swearing like sailors in animation has long lost its charm for me."

Dante vs. Vergil. Brother vs. brother.

devilmaycryseason2poster.jpg

A war between worlds ignites as Dante must battle the only force that mirrors his own: his estranged twin brother Vergil. In Devil May Cry Season 2, Dante must confront his own devils and the feeling of family he lost as a child. With the reemergence of Vergil, will Dante lay to rest old demons or fall victim to them?

Episode 9 "The Fallen"
With Dante in a deep freeze, war erupts in the demon world. Lady combs Mundus' lair for an ancient weapon. An invitation reaches Vergil from Earth.

Episode 10 "Shades"
Arius sends Dante into action with a plan to pit twin against twin. But Dante's thaw from his cold cryo-nightmare stirs dark and troubling visions.

Episode 11 "The Panther, The Lion, The Wolf"
As Dante and Vergil hurtle toward a fateful clash in the present, memories from the past uncover old wounds — and the family tragedy that tore them apart.

Episode 12 "A Pit of Serpents"
As Vergil battles a foe bent on bringing back chaos, a wounded Dante asks for Lady's help. A bold plan comes together on the eve of a rare eclipse.

Episode 13 "The Garden of Deadly Sins"
Dante and Lady visit a professor with mysterious powers to keep Arius away from the Arcana — and prevent the return of Argosax himself.

Episode 14 "Purgatorio"
A flashback sheds light on Baines' and Lady's first meeting. With Vergil in another dimension, Dante's forced to see things from a different perspective.

Episode 15 "Into the City of Woe"
Chaos reigns on Earth in the wake of a fiery resurrection as an oracle shows Vergil the truth. To save the world, Dante and Lady must divide and conquer.

Episode 16 "Vexilla Regis Prodeunt Inferni"
Siblings choose sides as a rift ripped open between realms ushers in the ultimate showdown where vengeance, power, fate and loyalty collide.

Sadder ending than season 1, Dante gets abandoned twice both by Vergil and Lady. :(

They've certainly set up season 3 adapting elements of the third game with the reveal Lady's father is still alive and was the Jester demon all along. Even had her DMC 3 outfit a flashback this season.

Slightly better than season 1 but low bar. Didn't expect to see so much of DMC 2 used like Arius and Argosax or even the Secretaries and Arcane.

Nice touch that with each episode, the end credits are "updated" with one new childhood memory.

Boy, soundtrack so early 90s. Korn, Papa Roach, Evanescence.

Not to mention he lost pretty much every major fight he was in. Who is the main character again? Because it still feels more like Vergil and Lady than Dante.

This adaption is all over the place. More or less adapt DMC 3 but then leave the main villain of DMC3 leftover while adapting DMC2 without the main girl from DMC 2 who was only a cameo last season.

I guess this was partially to give Lady her own side-story while season 3 does Dante/Trish/DMC1. Maybe. I guess it's like how they handled Hector in Castlevania.

Needed more game music, little less licensed music.

"Review: “Devil May Cry” Season 2: An Improved Second Season Effort"

Devil-May-Cry-Season-2-Review.jpg

"When I reviewed the first season of Devil May Cry, I called it a flawed yet fun outing. I feel like the second season delivered a better experience than the first season. However, I don’t think this season delivers the same heights as truly great animated adaptations of video games like Arcane or some of the great seasons of Castlevania.

I think the best improvement is Dante himself. In the first season, he seemed like a side character in his own TV show, just a jokey assassin who is cool and doesn’t take anything seriously. However, this season gives him a backstory where his mother was killed by demons, and his brother was kidnapped by the same demons who killed his mother. His jokester personality is a mask to hide his pain, which does expand his personality. His brother Virgil is sent to Hell and is tortured and develops into the opposite type of character from his brother Dante. Virgil is very stoic, which does make a great contrast to Dante’s jokey attitude. Virgil serves Mundus, the King of Hell, for most of the season, which leads to some tension between the two brothers."
