Is Nickelodeon Overhated?

People need to take off the nostalgia glasses, let go of the past and stop judging the merits of today's kids' shows by their now adult standards. If you're over 21, it's kind of silly to expect a channel aimed at children to cater to your personal whims.

I'd just ignore it. It's clear people are going to find what they remember loving it, and hail it as being better than it actually is. They'll grow up as adults and focus on other issues in their lives besides some TV channels intended for snot-nosed 9-year olds. If it does bother you, simply go to another site; it's why I left tv.com years ago, as it was essentially filled with a bunch of nostalgia goggled people that hate any children's show that comes out. (I was one of them.)

Part of the reason I joined Toonzone was because the community seemed inviting and fun to talk to, and it was nice to be with fellow fans of the shows I enjoy that had little bias over the modern media outside of "not a fan of this genre or artist."

There's an expression that I feel is fitting to that question: Haters gonna hate. There's really nothing that can be done about it. People are entitled to their own opinions, but why does it matter what a few adults think about a kids' cable channel anyway? It's like men complaining about the programming on Oxygen, or Gangster Rap fans complaining about CMT. It doesn't matter if adults don't like the current Nickelodeon, because these shows aren't made for them. They should just watch Nick at Nite or some other channel that's tailored for adult audiences.

To answer from the poll, Nick doesn't really deserves the hate it gets lately because it is slightly improving. My interest in the channel had declined in quality but once Bad Seeds and the other show (the one with the banana and pig) do impress like the older Nicktoons, then my interest in Nick won't no longer be in jeopardized. I still watch the channel for animation since I'm not into the live action.

The dinos (FOP and Spongebob) need to be ending. Give them proper send offs, and if they are really that concerned about making money, keep them around as bumpers or occasional movies. In other words, Mickey Mouse them, but stop relying on them to bring in all the ratings.

The Fairly OddParents' popularity seems to be fading away, but let's face it, SpongeBob ending now is a pipe dream. Nick hasn't and won't let go of SpongeBob (for now at least) because it continues to put butts into seats and makes Nick some $$$$$$$. Without the need of SBSP, Nick's ratings will bomb again.

Unless SBSP gets overshadowed by another Nicktoon, it won't leave the network anytime soon.

I think Nick is already transitioning FOP off. There's a bunch of episodes left, which Nick can air whenever they want since the show is still solid in ratings. But we already see less FOP and more SJC/RI/BW in the lineup. If anything, they may continue specials or live action movies.

I see merchandise and etc. of, and hear about, SpongeBob waaaaaay more often than I do with The Fairly OddParents, so while both of those shows have lasted a long time, it feels weird from my perspective that The Fairly OddParents is still around. If the latter had more merchandise I wouldn't feel that way.

You mean the new variant they're using on all their merchandide? The one that tries to invoke the feeling of the old logo with the orange background and white text? That one?

By "current plain" logo, I mean the regular orange one. Like I said, though, I like how they're been making many variations of the current orange logo (even the white text, orange background one counts) like how the splat logo had many variations. I think for the first three years of having the current orange plain logo (2009-2012), Nick didn't vary it, from what I remember (besides maybe having a "nickelodeon" one and a "nick" one, and "TeenNick," etc.")

About FOP's popularity. I think it can be contributed to being more of an international success than an American one. I saw this because of my experience being an admin on the FOP's wiki years back, the vast majority of editors were from non-English speaking countries. It seems especially popular in Latin America.

Bad Seeds looks very promising, but I still only give it like a 1/4 chance of becoming a Spongebob even if it is a hit.

Agreed 100 percent. But Nick does have it's best set of cartoons across the board in years (and it'll only get better with the upcoming ones). SJC and TMNT come to mind as helping to alleviate Nick's SBSP reliance. And I have high hopes for Bad Seeds too.

But let's be honest, the fact SBSP can pull in 3.0-3.5M+ ratings on reruns and 4.0-5.0M+ on premieres shows how much of pop culture it is. No other cable show can do that. Only syndicated broadcast shows like TBBT and NCIS can rerun over 3.0M. And because of that, Nick will keep it on air as long as it continues to do what it does... especially with all the money it makes thru merchandise. What Nick can get from it It really is something unique - and may not be seen again as far as kids shows.

To get the same thing from the "next cartoon" is asking for a lot, but diversifying the line up will basically come down to Nick having enough shows that can pull their own weight and hold Nick's ratings. SJC/RI/SaC have been much needed additions to the boring SBSP/FOP lineup of last year. Nick has knocked 12 airings of SBSP to 9 - with airing three more shows. It's a start.

Insulting people isn't really the best way to get your point across to begin with. All that would do is make other people more upset and angry. Not to mention it wouldn't help you get your point across if you just blatantly insult them. Some people are just not going to be open to changing their opinions and you can't force them to change their minds. You can provide your opinion, but as regards to making them change their outlook, that's completely up to them and some people do keep on rose-colored glasses when it comes to nostalgia. Ignoring them if they're just interested in hating the channel would probably be the best option.

As for the question itself, I don't know if I'd say that the channel is over hated. Most of the criticisms I see for the channel are pretty valid, such as Spongebob taking up a good chuck of their lineup and the lineup itself lacking in variety. The only shows that I watch on Nick are TMNT, Legend of Korra and Sam and Cat. If I had Nicktoons, I'd probably watch that more due to some of the show that it airs. It also doesn't help that the channel has a bad history of handling some of its third property shows and they don't give some of their shows a chance, like with Winx Club constantly moving around the schedule. Granted, I don't go to too many other sites where they discuss Nickelodeon, but for at least here, the hatred isn't overwhelming and most of the discussions do point out the channel's strengths and short comings.

Wow - same reason this is my favorite site to talk about cartoons in general... And I'm someone who feels Nick deserves its hate right now (but not just to hate. Nothing like that.).

Nickelodeon is loathed by Power Rangers fans for two big reasons: 20 episodes per year, and the summer hiatus. PR seasons used to be regularly 40, 38, or 32 episodes per year. Its source material, Super Sentai in Japan, continues marching on with new episodes every week, regardless of what happens outside Japan. That means PR falls behind. Megaforce and Super Megaforce are the result of cramming about 100 episodes of two different Super Sentai series (Goseiger and Gokaiger) into 40 episodes . Before Samurai arrived on Nickelodeon, beginning with Time Force on Fox Kids, and ending with RPM on ABC Kids, the summer hiatus was eliminated and new PR episodes aired in those months. Now, we have a break that lasts from April to September, disrupting story flow immensely. Add in that it appears Dino Charge, based on Kyoryuger, will be split across two seasons like Samurai was, with Dino Supercharge the second season, and were looking at 2017 to get to the current Super Sentai, ToQger, with a train theme. I think a lot of PR fans feel Nickelodeon is completely apathetic to the way the show works and airs in Japan, and continues to only order those 20 episodes per year.

And in some of the tweets today, I saw quite a bit of the term "Korra rage." Korra fans wanted some news out of Nickelodeon today, and were quite disappointed today when they didn't get it. I can see why Disney stopped making these presentations: a lot of fans see this not as an event for advertisers, but as a big announcement event for everything, and there are important differences between the two. As Ed Liu and I were discussing on the Disney board, just like the TMNT, these events have mutated from their original purpose many years ago, and our expectations as to what these events should include have changed as well.

As long as Nick gives TMNT a long and healthy run (I'm hoping for at least 7 seasons before it ends), I don't care what else they do.
