Even back then the Bat Embargo didn't really impact my enjoyment of JLU and if anything I respect this even more in retrospect.
1. Like some people I agree that it was a blessing in disguise in that it meant other DC properties got a chance to shine.
Even Challenge of the Superfriends had one which is why the Joker wasn't part of the Legion of Doom.
But again it meant say the presence of Cheetah and Captain Cold as opposed to having Mr. Freeze and Catwoman.
2. Even The Batman had one as Two-Face, Scarecrow and Ra's al Ghul were off limits.
But hey at least JLU wasn't denied the Batman villains only for The Batman or The Dark Knight trilogy to go unmade. They actually followed through with both.
Heck, it's why Bruce Wayne's appearance in Smallville never happened. But hey Green Arrow got some more exposure outside the comics even if used more as a Batman stand in.
In contrast you have multiple cases where an embargo is issued, but nothing surfaced.
1. Universal Studios wanted to make a Human Torch movie for whatever reason. This meant the 70s Fantastic Four cartoon had Herbie the Robot in Johnny's place.
Same with Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends. Albeit they had a decent replacement with Firestar.
Movie was never made.
2. The scrapped James Cameron Spider-Man film planned to use Sandman and Electro.
Hence why Spider-Man TAS used Hydroman, and why Electro debuted near the end.
Granted he was part of the team in the comics, it's why the F4 Season 2 had Hydroman as part of the Frightful Four instead of Sandman.
No movie again.
3. A planned Aquaman series Mercy Reef in the 2000s meant no Aquaman or Black Manta in JLU Season 3.
Pilot was made, but took time to distribute in any fashion. Not even a special TV airing.
4. Yeah even She-Ra 2018 got that. Mind you I think the show was just fine without He-Man, I just think as a character bit they should have been allowed to at least have a follow up movie where Adora could at least discover the place and family she was taken from.
But yeah originally the rights were tied up in a He-Man movie which yep didn't get made.
And MotU Revelations? Well it did get made and distributed, but a year after She-Ra ended.
I don't know. Shouldn't there at least be a requirement that the ones getting the rights at least have a movie or show ready to distribute?
Just seems like choosing which kids get to play with the toys, only the one who gets to play with them doesn't. They don't even put them on the shelf to admire.
