A new animated short set within the Spider-Verse debuts today at 6 a.m. PT on YouTube!

The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story
Online debut - March 27, 2024 (on YouTube)

From Sony Pictures Animation and Sony Pictures Imageworks, the short is set in the world of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and follows Miles Morales/Spider-Man as he struggles to balance his responsibilities as a teenager, friend, student and Spider-Man. In navigating those pressures, Miles experiences a panic attack that forces him to confront the manifestations of his anxiety and learn that reaching out for help can be just as brave an act as protecting his city from evil.

The digital release comes in partnership with the Kevin Love Fund, and will be incorporated as part of the fund’s new mental health-focused lesson plan, “The Hero Within.” The lesson plan invites students to tell their own story through the lens of mental health awareness via an interactive curriculum including a creative storyboard activity.

“The Spider Within: “A Spider-Verse Story” is written by Khaila Amazan, and produced by LENS program creators Michelle Raimo-Kouyate and David Schulenburg. Rounding out the LENS team are Clara Chan who served as vfx supervisor and Joe Darko who served as animation supervisor.

I have to admit visually this is very impressive especially when all those spiders explode out and we see Miles crawling all around his room in the day dream and the idea itself is good. I do feel a problem is that since this is obviously set BETWEEN Into and Across The Spiderverse the whole thing about ending with Miles talking to his dad feels rather lacking because well the whole point of the short is how all of this pressure is getting to him from his school and super hero life so the answer should be taking off that stress by copting to it but... we know he doesn't because we know how in Across Jefferson still doesn't know about his son. Thus there is a bit of an incomplete/off feeling about this as is. Not that it destroys the short but yeah that's the problem with being a betweener bit; you have to tell stories that best won't break the main one and when you tell ones like this whose core if fully exposed would it does hurt the overall product.

I wasn't sure how this would turn out but some of this was really intense and scary. It feels so coincidental that it was released on the same day as the new X-Men 97 episode.

"The problems of being Spider-Man are well-known at this point — the delicate balance of fighting crime while keeping a separate personal life going. Whether you’re Peter Parker, Miles Morales or Spider-Ham, it’s a universal fact of the webslinging life. In the new short released by Sony today, that fact seems to be digging at Miles to the point of being overwhelming.

No one currently knows when the third chapter in the Spider-Verse trilogy will be released. The film was originally promised for March 29 — this coming Friday — but was removed from the schedule months ago by Sony. Allegedly this was due to the actor’s and writer’s strikes, but there was also a lot of bad press over the working conditions at Sony Animation which, hopefully, made them take a pause to restructure things."

The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story

I've been rewatching Twin Peaks: The Return on Blu-Ray, and the staticky movements and spookiness of the villain here pleasurably reminds me of the scariest of David Lynch's stuff (if understandably toned down for kids). But I found a LOT of the moments of horror (including a bug entering Miles' mouth) reminiscent of The Return. And that's a very cool thing. ****.

Thank you, Romania, we thought the film will never see the light of day here. Still, why are you waiting some more and launching the film days later than in good ol America?

Today marks the 5th Year Anniversary of the HD Version of Skyward Sword. I appreciated how the HD Version of the game included quality of life improvements such as the option to use button controls.
You know at this point we really need to admit it is never coming home.
