"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

A handful of worth while fight sequences, Kirito turning the tables on Sugo (after admittedly one of the worst moments in the series) and because I happen to like Kirito and Asuna's pairing I enjoyed some of the romance stuff, though that was tainted by Yui's existence. It was satisfying to see them escape Aincrad and then satisfying to see them re-united after Alfheim.

That's my personal opinion anyway.

I can't really say that there were any highs for me, but I also thought that entire show was bad, instead of just being bad in the second half like I kept hearing before the first season aired. The main difference was that the first half was more watchable bad, while the second half was painfully bad. I will say that unlike the first season, I haven't heard as much negativity for the second season, but I also haven't heard as much praise for it either like I did with the first season. Saying that it doesn't have any of the highs or low points of the first season does kind of match with what I've heard about it.

That just makes me glad to not see it any further. There weren't any real highs for me from the first season to begin with, but it doesn't sound any more appealing with no huge low points either. Plus, if I watch a bad show, I would rather for them to be entertainingly bad or interestingly bad, as opposed to just boringly bad like this season sounds like or the painfully bad that took up a large chuck of the first season.

Colleagues,

the whole season was full of highs. the only real flaw was that they should have fully committed to the harem angle. thankfully the video games rectify this by having kirito able to date and eventually sleep with the whole female cast. even the loli and his cousin.

anyway glad to see sword art online 2 coming so soon. if the new season is half as good as the first it'll easily be the best toonami anime of 2015. its also great that its taking the 1:00am slot since it'll get some of the best ratings of the night.

I have some very mixed feelings on SAO, but I heard that season 2 is an improvement, so...

I respectfully disagree, especially about the harem angle. I thought that was one of the worst aspects of the show since Kirito was already in a relationship with Asuna. While I never really liked their relationship at all, he was not interested in anyone else, so giving him more love interests came off as unnecessary fluff, especially when most of his harem barely appeared in the show to begin with. I didn't think that the season was full of highs, but that is rather subjective anyway. I have no idea why you think that sleeping with the whole female cast is an improvement. Like I said before, it's fine for the fans, but I'd rather just skip this and watch stuff I actually like either later on in the block or just wait the next day to see them On Dmeand if I want to sleep.

Is Michiko to Hatchin honestly too much to ask

Uggh, no! Not another tour of SAO! I still have scars from season one!

Is Michiko to Hatchin honestly too much to ask

Yes. Please. I've seen some episodes. I've been meaning to watch it. I've heard good things about it.

Well, this shouldn't surprise anyone. It's a big name and the first season did quite well for its timeslot. The second season is all new, so there's several things pointing towards this helping Toonami out, which is nice.

Personally, I'm not very interested, but I'll watch. I watched the first season when it first aired in Japan back in 2012 because it was really hyped. I thought the premse had potential, but was terribly executed and the second half was just plain bad. I did plan to check out season 2 just to see what it was like, but never really got around to it. So now I can get that watched at least. But I'd rather get to see Magi or Madoka for sure.

That doesn't exactly fill me with hope. XP

I'll probably skip SAOII as well. Watched all of the first series and though my dislike for it isn't as bad, wasn't quite entertained anyway. It was basically background noise for me.

As for what should replace Deadman Wonderland... I'm leaning in the favor of them continuing Bebop where they left off. Wouldn't mind Dandy either, but even for how much Bebop has been played to death, they did make the effort to get new tapes so that's my thought. With them having planned to repeat Dandy anyway, it'd be nice though if they were to at least manage a 2nd run of Season 2 somewhere down the road since those episodes have only played once.

I also agree on flipping Shippuden with Final Act.

Sword Art Online II: This Time We Have Guns, Because Of Reasons

People claim this beats series 1. I think it's a trap. Guess we'll find out.
Well........... that's certainly one way of putting it.

Anyway, I know people here in the forums had a lot of negative opinions on the show and I felt similarly having watched it twice now (first in Japanese, then again dubbed). So I don't blame people for not feeling the least bit optimistic and even skeptical of season 2.

But if it helps any, I would argue that Season 2 "overall" was at least somewhat stronger narratively than season 1. I say "overall" in quotes because there's three arcs in the second season and they're not that deeply connected. I mean there's continuity between them, but the continuity itself doesn't directly affect the following arc. It's not a good or bad thing, it's just, "well, there's continuity". I will say this though and without saying much, the third arc to me is probably the strongest of the three in the sense that it does what I've always wanted the Aincrad arc of Sword Art Online to do which is connecting between the virtual world and the real world and the affect it can have through the characters. It's the least consequential in terms of action and fantasy elements and yet that's okay. It instead focuses on low stakes drama and doesn't resort to certain cliches found in high stakes drama that would feel cheap like with previous arcs so far.

Also, that arc doesn't revolve around Kirito at all for once, and that's all I'm gonna say.

We're not getting Magi, that ship has sailed. We'll probably end up getting stuck with (ugh) Aldnoah.Zero or (triple ugh) Mahouka when Kill la Kill ends in July.

Toonami won't touch Mahouka with a ten-foot pole. I am pretty sure about that. Aldnoah.ZERO on the other hand might happen because Toonami's been starved for a mecha show for a while.

I would not say the ship has sailed for either Magi or Fate/ZERO yet. Blue Exorcist still happened, after all, so Magi might show up and Toonami will just run both seasons in one shot. As for F/Z, the primary issue is getting a show that often has runtimes of 26-27 minutes cut down to 21-22 minutes. It can't be done without slicing actual content from the show itself.

I really wish Toonami got Jojo so I can see all of your reactions

I did enjoy the dubbed episodes on Crunchyroll last year, so I'd probably enjoy seeing the whole series. It seems liked the kind of fun over the top action series that I could get behind based off of those episodes.

With Sword Art Online II coming to Toonami is really cool & all but, everyone keep saying that it's going to replace Gurren Lagann, but wouldn't it be replacing Deadman Wonderland, because the first week of March is Daylight savings time & they lose one hour so that would possibly mean that they would air double Gurren Lagann on March 21st, a week before, because Gurren Lagann has the uneven 27 episode run instead of the traditional 24 to 26 episode run, or are they going to cut that episode that's supposed air on March 7th and go without it, or it will be like what happened with Hellsing: Ultimate episodes 9 & 10 back last November. I'm just very confused about all this.

Also on another note:
I'm so excited this is my first post.

Makes sense for this to be the Gurren Lagann replacement. It's just a little earlier than its first season, which makes sense since it was inevitable.

During Kill la Kill this week, I saw their Valentine's Day promo and noticed something interesting. Anyone else notice that within the first 15 seconds of it, (:10-:11) they had a shot of Goku and Chi-Chi? It was from the finale of Dragon Ball after they'd gotten married. I find it interesting that they pulled that from the original DB when they're not playing it.

That was part of the recap in Kai's pilot.

Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
