"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

This is what I've been saying. I am in the believer of having 2am premieres, because it opens up the door for a lot more premieres. If Soul Eater can continue getting the ratings it gets at 1:30am, imagine how a 2am premiere would do right after? Those later hours need to be freshened up somehow, because what's the point in a 6 hour Toonami if more than half of the lineup remains to be reruns of the same shows over and over again? The only thing I don't want them doing is pushing One Piece down to a later slot to make room for a new show, because that would ruin the entire point of having the Big 3 Shonen Jump titles airing together, and One Piece deserves to stay in an earlier slot.

I seriously doubt that they would move One Piece to a later slot. They'd probably want to have all of the big Shonen Jump titles airing together and I really can't see them airing it later on the block. I could see them moving Soul Eater to 2AM if they want to give a new show a boost, but I think that One Piece is going to stay where it is until either they get the 11PM hour or Bleach ends, whichever comes first. I'd be fine with 2AM premieres as well. They do have a lot of time to work with and having a couple of premieres in the later hours of the block would help to keep people interested in watching more of it to help boost ratings.

Your disappointment is unfounded. This may be a shocker to you, a so-called fan of Slayers, but the entire Zanaffar arc of Revolution is Canon material from the original Novels. Another shocker: the ending arc from the first series is only ~1/3 canon. Amelia is not even introduced until after the Copy Rezo bit in the Novels, which was..anticlimactic. So, that is not in fact the reason why R_Evolution_R is bad. It's bad because it is a terrible mixture of canon novel elements that they skipped in Slayers/Next, that they had to heavily retcon to make work. The Zanafar and Zumma bits are definitely canon. I can't read beyond the eighth novel, so I don't know if the Bits with [strike]Zenagata[/strike]Wizer, or Rezo have any cannoness because Tokyopop stopped releasing the novels at 8. Pakota is not Canon.

The Reason R_Evolution_R is bad is threefold:
1. Pakota.
2. Bad retconning.
3. Bad English dubbed portrayals of Xelloss and Lina. Xelloss needs to sound Scheming and devious and MS doesn't deliver. Lina needs to sound sharp and almost shrill, but MS made her sound happy-cutesy instead. Cutesy Lina does not work in English. (Evolution was better voiced than Revolution, except those episode where Eric Stuart was clearly sick).

There is no reason to think that R_Evolution_R has better animation than previous series. Digital Animation and progressive scan widescreen are nice and all, but the actual animation was lackluster. NEXT and TRY both have better animation. There is nothing particularly wrong with the animation of Slayers other than needing some high quality de-interlacing and remastering (certain characters do need redubbing in the first 13 episodes.) Slayers would do fine on Toonami. Slayers Revolution would not.

Ahhh, attacking my fandom, how cute. I usually only have to deal with that from sub-elitists, not other Slayers fans, but oh well. Now this may be a shocker to you, but I also have the 8 volumes that were released and just got through re-reading the two that dealt with Copy Rezo and Zanaffar, because, as I said before, I try not to say things that are incorrect, and I'm always more than willing to admit I'm wrong when I'm proven wrong. As for your ascertain that the entire Zanaffar arc of Revolution is canon, I'm afraid that's not even close to being true. Sure, there were some aspects of it that were canon, such as Duclis(though he was only a secondary character in the novel), and the Zanaffar armor, and that's it. There were no magic tanks, no inspector, no Pakota, no royal lady(I don't remember her name) who stole money that was supposed to go to a kingdom that, surprise, surprise, wasn't in the novel, no assassin guy, and though there was mention of attacking Saillune, it never actually happened so there was no Phil or Sylphiel, nor any Zanaffar going around destroying towns on it's way to Saillune. The Demon Beast was pretty much dealt with shortly after it appeared.

As for the second half of the first season with Copy Rezo, way more of that was canon than the Zanaffar arc of Revolution. Sure, Copy Rezo didn't use Zanaffar, but the story was basically the same as what was in the novel with an additional character or two showing up. There was no Amelia or Zangulas(sp?), but there was Vrumugun, Eris had a little different introduction, but otherwise she was the same, there was Rahanawhatshisname(the fishman), the bounty that forced them to Sairaag, Sylphiel, Zelgadiss, and Copy Rezo acting like Copy Rezo, as well as Flagohn and the Blessed Blade. When looking at which was more in line with the novels, there's no comparison.

And to finish up, my disappointment is not unfounded, (R)evolution was bad in comparison to the earlier seasons and it made it a point to ignore the Copy Rezo arc when it used Zanaffar, even if it used it in the way the novel did(sort of). As far as a TV show goes, I can't remember any show ever doing such a thing before. They could have just done something completely new and I wouldn't have had such a problem with it. Even stranger, after attacking my fandom, you agreed with me that (R)evolution was bad, which made your first couple sentence seem to have no reason behind them other than to be offensive, which I don't understand at all.

Can we please get back on topic re: Toonami and perhaps move this Slayers discussion elsewhere, i.e. the anime forum?

Yeah, now I just feel bad for bringing it up when it just derailed the thread, especially when that problem was happening way too much in the first Ratings thread.

In an attempt to get the thread back on track, what are the chances of Toonami airing Eureka Seven AO? I don't like the original series at all, I honestly don't see much of the appeal of it, it isn't doing that well in ratings and the sequel series might be pretty expensive. Still, I wonder if Funimation would want to put the series on the block to help boost DVD sales and maybe make another deal with them like they did with Deadman Wonderland. I imagine that they'd prefer to give that series more of a boost than the sequel to GXP. Although I wouldn't be into either series airing, I could see them airing AO in the future.

These may just be a couple errors, but [as] updated their on-air schedule. The first Saturday in June, they have One Piece + Soul Eater swapped, (SE at 1, OP at 1:30). For the June OP, no # listed, but for Soul Eater, #17, with #15 airing the week before, so there's no #16 listed. Again, probably just a couple errors, but thought I'd bring it up anyway.

As for Eureka Seven AO. I think about InuYasha:TFA. Most of the talk I've seen is (big-time paraphrasing here) InuYasha being done for years, and that there's no point in starting TFA. So I'd be on the same boat for ES:AO. I'd say though if [as] found no problem airing it, then I'd hope they'd also consider TFA. In my words, it'd be fair. Since you're bringing on a later series to one show, might as well do it for the other.

Yeah, I don't see them moving One Piece at 1:30AM, at least not so soon after its premiere. It would kind of make the choice of moving Soul Eater pointless if it was only for two weeks before going back to 1AM.

I couldn't care less about if they aired Inuyasha: The Final Act to be perfectly honest. They might be interested in getting it once Inuyasha finishes its run, but there is the issue of how much it could cost, especially when Viz Media might not be willing to work with them like Funimation has, and they might want to keep it an exclusive to Neon Alley as well. It might be a bit easier to get Eureka Seven AO, but I'm not too eager to see that series either. I'd prefer something new as opposed to a sequel series to one that just wrapped up, but I could see Funimation wanting them to air one of their more recent titles.

Only the June 8th schedule has One Piece and Soul Eater swapped. Most definitely an error.

They actually had it updated to June 8th before with all the same mistakes and errors. Go back in the thread a bit to see it have been brought up before. It's probably an error, but should be fixed regardless of that. Remember ThunderCats and Bebop? Yeah, it should be fixed this time.

Yeah, hopefully the Toonami crew are informed so they don't let this happen, unlike the other mishaps. Even if One Piece and Soul Eater's timeslots are fixed, there's a chance they'll still skip an episode of Soul Eater on June 8th if this isn't all sorted out.

The Toonami crew will be hosting another Tumblr Q&A session this Sunday.

Hey guys! This Sunday we will be doing a Q&A. No set start time, just off an on over the course of the day, until we don’t want to answer questions any more. We’ll probably start around 11am-ish et. Looking forward to it!

Remember, if you ask a question, don't make it a stupid one. All you do is embarrass us if it is.

Yeah, so no "why did you license Sword Art Online" or "boo, SAO sucks" or anything else to make the Q & A time your opportunity to rant to the Toonami crew. Really make thought-provoking questions folks.

Yes, don't tell them facts everyone knows already.

In particular, I hope enough people point out to them the schedule error of One Piece and Soul Eater switching timeslots on June 8th and how Soul Eater is scheduled to skip an episode that date. We don't want a repeat of what happened with Thundercats and Bebop.

Tired of Black Dynamite hurting Toonami's ratings? Good news, it's leaving after this Saturday.

The bad news is, they're just bumping it off and moving Cleveland to 11PM, Family Guy to the 10PM hour and King of the Hill returns to 9:30PM.

And with that my current dreams for expansion have died.

Get ready for 2AM premieres.

Is FOX really going to be okay with them having one of their shows compete with ADHD? I wonder... In any case, I hope Sword Art Online airs at 2am so I can still watch One Piece and Soul Eater back to back. Otherwise, I'm just gonna go to sleep after One Piece. Alternatively, if One Piece and Soul Eater beat Naruto and Bleach consistently in the total viewer and adult ratings like they did last week, I hope they get the 12am hour and the Bleach/Naruto hour gets pushed back to 1am. That, unfortunately, is but a dream.

It's about time. Looks like they might be getting ready to bring Bob's Burgers in at 10:30.

Unfortunately it really does kill off hopes for expansion, but Toonami's lead-in should be a lot stronger now so the block is going to still benefit, which hopefully carries on to the later slots as 2 AM premieres will be a reality.

Some folks think with Home Movies at 9PM that KOTH at 9:30PM is a place holder for Bob's Burgers and maybe it is but I'd highly advise against premiering something on AS at 9:30PM on a Saturday where even Family Guy struggles to break 0.5 with 18-49 some weeks.

I'd prefer an expansion, but that sadly doesn't look like it's going to happen anytime soon. I still don't think that 2AM premieres would be too bad. They could help to keep the interest in the block going for a bit longer than the first two hours. I kind of wouldn't mind Sword Art Online to be at 2AM, if only because I'd have the choice of going to sleep if the show ends up turning me off like GXP did, but there's probably a better chance that they'll move Soul Eater so that Sword Art Online can get a better slot. It does depend on how well Soul Eater does though.

I'd be fine if Soul Eater sticks it out at 1:30. We're lucky enough it's ratings didn't taper off due to the time slot change (thank goodness One Piece did so well in the ratings last week). I'd think with Soul Eater developing a strong enough audience here on Toonami, that it could be enough to help out Sword Art Online at 2am. Of course I'm just yapping because I'm hoping SE doesn't move again. *crosses fingers*

I am getting interested in seeing the ratings for the 2am slot. Maybe we won't see expansion anytime soon, but great ratings so late into the night cannot be ignored. Here's hoping SAO does well when it airs!

It may come to the point when they have to decide how much money they're willing to spend on Toonami to keep fresh content in the first 3 hours but maybe good enough ratings and interested advertisers will keep Toonami from becoming a money sink.

Today marks the 15th Year Anniversary of ThunderCats (2011). While I find it unfortunate that the show was canceled before it had a chance to finish its story, I am glad that the show's art director was willing to give fans closure via a podcast interview.
Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
