"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

While I am 99% certain that Toonami won't get expansion this year, I still wouldn't rule it out completely, if only because I have to wonder whether FOX will really be okay with Cleveland airing against their ADHD. It may still be in the cards if they aren't, and this could just be a temporary lineup for the interim until August. Wishful thinking, I know, but it might happen. The mystery show has yet to air, and unless they plan to hold on it until 2014 or have premieres straight until 3am, I think them getting 11pm could still be possible. Of course, this all depends on how well One Piece and Soul Eater continue to do. If they keep bringing in ratings like they did last week, and Bleach and Naruto don't slack, then maybe [adult swim] would have reason to allow a 7 hour Toonami to maximize their potential.

This month's Toonami Q&A is over. Some stuff we didn't know, a lot of stuff we already knew, some stuff that we suspected was confirmed, etc.

Here's a rundown of what was discussed:

- There will be another movie night
- They'll try not to air premieres past 3am, but it may happen
- Expansion isn't possible at this time
- The online Toonami comic is still being worked on
- They're looking at other Aniplex shows
- They watched a few episodes of Sword Art Online before picking it up
- It "hasn't been decided" if SAO is what's replacing Eureka Seven
- They're working on a new TOM speech
- They aren't going to skip any filler, so stop asking them
- They'd love to air a Gundam series if they could
- New music video in the works
- The openings and endings are shortened by the distributors, not Toonami
- "Do not trust the backdoor schedule"
- The Aniplex Facebook poll did not play any role in their decision to pick up Sword Art Online
- It's "highly unlikely" that they'll be able to air Young Justice or Green Lantern
- Any show that performs terribly ratings-wise will be either moved or pulled from the block
- FLCL is still on the table for a future Toonami airing

Am I the only one who felt that Q & A session could've gone out better? Like more thought provoking questions. Most of questions asked were either ones already asked by the Toonami crew before, ones that could easily be answered if you look at the FAQ, ones they just couldn't answer because for business reasons they can't go into detail, ones that were silly to ask. Heck, some of the questions weren't even really questions.

Assuming GXP was an acception to how bad it was doing, but we now know they'll use 2am if they have to, and they will when SAO enters
Not dissapointed like that. Maybe not this year, maybe not next, but later... later... it could happen. Let Toonami's revival have a longer time to grow. +, I heard if it's demanded enough, but obviously right now, no chance.
When I first thought of speech, It though it'd be great if they made an even around October 2016 where TOM with Sara as his VP is running against some other dude for Toonami President.(Just a random thought)
Well, as far as filler goes, if that question was directed toward Naruto, I can live with 137-206 if I had to. I didn't mind them, really. Sometimes I do like filler, and even though it was dragged on, I liked Naruto's.
I wonder what the most logical choice would be. Do they go with something new-new? Or As close to new as possible. I don't know how people would feel seeing MSG SEED Destiny. I haven't seen it myself, so I don't know how the series is.
Lesson learned
Can I assume GITS' 2 seasons as well, since I heard [as] as perpetual rights to them?

I hope that the mystery show is Yu Yu Hakusho, I would enjoy that more than anything! But its most likely a gundam show. But I think there is a good chance the mystery show is Outlaw Star. They should give Bebop a break and let outlaw star takes its slot(s). Make bebop go out with a bang by airing the cowboy bebop movie on the next movie night.

The interesting thing to me is that Sword Art Online was picked out from all the Aniplex shows they were interested in heavily because it was the show Aniplex wanted the most on Toonami. This seems to contrast with what I hear from FUNi execs at cons where they act like they have next to no say in what Toonami picks up (clearly their Panty and Stocking push hasn't gotten anywhere, while Casshern Sins got no push from them at all and took them by surprise). I slept in too late (post-con exhaustion) to ask them about this during the Q&A; guess I'll try next month. And they need to listen to FUNi and get Michiko and Hatchin!

Actually, the question was more directed towards One Piece's filler.

I'm glad that there will be another movie night and I'm glad that they're looking into other shows from Aniplex. The fact that they aren't sure if Sword Art Online is replacing Eureka Seven makes me wonder if the mystery show is also going to come up in August. I'm fine with them airing the One Piece fillers since I haven't heard a lot of negative things about them, but airing the Naruto fillers probably wouldn't be a good move ratings wise. Though, they're still far from that point in the series, so they don't have to worry about that just yet.

Personally, I'd like to see Sengoku Basara, Samurai Champloo, and Psycho-Pass as far as anime goes. I wish there were more American cartoons for them to acquire the rights to.

The last of the "Adult" American action cartoons I could think of them getting are Spawn and Invasion America. Spawn would never happen due to standards and in-fighting between brands in the WB family of networks and Invasion is just long-forgotten, old and not that good.

There might be some Canadian shows they could get if they want Western animation (will Guardians of Luna ever be ready?).

Does Canada even have have adult action shows it can offer?

At this point, if Guardians of Luna is actually made, it will be a giant mess of a production that no one will want to see. Things in development hell that long just don't end well for anyone.

Toonami would have to wait and see first. See who Sunrise gives those shows to before they can pick anything up. If they go to FUNi or Viz, no problem. If they go to Aniplex, they'll have to pay a bit more, but they can hopefully snatch them up, assuming their relationship develops further. If they go to Sentai, they're pretty much screwed out of a deal. Sunrise is the deciding factor here; all we can do is hope and pray that they play their cards right.

I don't think Aniplex of America handles distribution for any shows that they didn't produce themselves.
