"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

Maybe it's Future Diary? That seems like a good late night fit, though I'd love it to be MTH. Astral Ocean seems like a nice progression but would be a ratings disaster, honestly. Lots of people didn't watch/like E7 anyway and those of us that did in large part choose to believe that AO doesn't exist.

If it's an older show, Claymore, Burst Angel or Black Cat would be interesting. The prices couldn't be too high for those, and they're shorter running and feel at least a bit more edgy than the Shounen Jump fare.

It sure won't be Astral Ocean; they just started dubbing the thing.

No, they finished months ago. The dub will be released on DVD on August 13. They've been working on it for over a year now.

Black Cat IS a Shonen Jump series though, and Claymore was briefly published in Weekly Shonen Jump as well. ;)

I'm just guessing, because I don't know much, but I assume it costs more to license stuff that just got finished, or just came out on home video. They want you to buy the discs instead, right?

Didn't stop Deadman Wonderland from being picked up a good 4 months before it's release on DVD. But yes, newer titles are likely more expensive than a title released several years prior, unless that title is an especially lucrative title like Dragonball Z, in which case it's still expensive despite it's age.

Whatever replaces Eureka 7, I hope it's new to the network and Toonami and overall a good show through and through. Not garbage like Sword Art Online or Tenchi Muyo! GXP. That's all I can hope for at this point.

Since that happened when Toonami first started and had a pretty low budget, I think that Funimation probably made a deal with them so that they could afford it. Cases like that are probably going to be the exception for awhile.

I'm hoping for that as well. Something good that would actually make me want to stay up later in order to watch it. A part of me is curious about how bad Astral Ocean can be, especially when I already dislike Eureka 7 quite a bit and find most of it boring. Going to the sequel series after Eureka 7 finishes would kind of make sense, but it's probably a bit too expensive after getting Sword Art Online and it probably wouldn't do well in ratings.

The Deadman Wonderland anime bombed like Heaven's Gate in Japan, so FUNi probably didn't have all that much faith in it. In fact, like so many shows on the original block before it, Toonami pretty much saved it from fading into obscurity.

On the subject of new shows, Panty and Stocking seems more like an [as] show than a Toonami one, considering its obvious American influences. I've seen Trigun, though, and I love it, so I wouldn't mind seeing it return to [as] through Toonami. Some other anime I could think of for the block are Toriko, Girls und Panzer, and Shakugan no Shana. Still, GuP may be too moe for the crew's palate (I'm mostly just hoping for the friggin' thing to air SOMEWHERE), not to mention they don't seem to be trying for a relationship with Sentai Filmworks, and the latter is already airing on FUNimation Channel (worrisome because Toonami never seems to air anything that's on that at the same time), so the former may be the most likely candidate.

Also, what the HFIL's so bad about AO, anyway? What makes it such a travesty compared to the original E7 (feel free to use spoiler tags if necessary)?

That's possible, but it would still probably be pretty expensive for them to air, regardless of how Funimation felt about the series. If they didn't have much faith in the series, then that could have helped them in trying to make a deal with Toonami so that they could air both Deadman Wonderland and Casshern Sins.

A part of me is quite curious about that too. It would probably involve spoilers for the end of Eureka 7, but I would probably still read it just out of curiosity. Considering how much I dislike Eureka 7, I wonder if I would actually dislike AO or if it would appeal to me more than the original series. It would be kind of ironic in that way, but unlikely.

Well...

It ruined the whole message of E7. Say what you will about the show, whether you like it or not, but at the end of the show, the main message was that one day, humans and the Scub Coral could work together and exist in the same universe. AO throws that right out the window and completely goes against that message. Additionally, Renton seems like a really different character in AO, and not in a good way.

Other than that, there was nothing really spectacular about the show itself. I found the animation, music, and Japanese voice acting to be decent, maybe good, at best.

I definitely felt Astral Ocean abandoned some of the charm of the original series. No matter how much people criticized the first show for being convoluted and not clearly explaining things in the plot and not having characters be likeable or memorable, I felt the way much of the characters established themselves and served their roles in the show made sense to me and when information needed about the plot followed, it didn't bother me so much. In Astral Ocean though, I couldn't even follow what was going on. Most character's not only I didn't find memorable, but I didn't even understand their purposes. I wasn't even sure what their occupations were at... Generation Bleu, i think the place was called? There was nearly constantly technobabble from characters I know I didn't care all that much for and another character just constantly spoke anime references. And that's not adding how space and time confusingly played a factor into the sequel.

Also, regarding the message itself in the original series. I will briefly say that while there certainly was a message regarding embracing the coexistence between scub corals and humans, what I got out of the show (especially after watching it for a third time) is that the world outside of your comfortable yet boring bubble can be harsher, demotivating and more cruel than your pictured in your head. As a result, it's all the more important to find something that would help you make sense of all the harsher things about the real world. That's what I keep getting out of the story.

That is true, that that could be the message of the series. To be honest, I think the series can be interpreted a lot of different ways, and so can the message. Hell, love conquers all could be the message. I guess it's just a matter of viewpoint.

Oh certainly. Eureka Seven is pretty much to us what Evangelion was to a lot of other people as far as interpretting messages.

Half of Astral Ocean will be out on DVD next month, with the other half out a few months later.

They could easily start airing it once E7 ends.

Toriko wouldn't be a good choice for now. We don't need 4 extremely long Shonen Jump shows airing on the block at the same time. Plus from what I gather Toriko's way toned down in content from the manga and could easily air on a children's block given how tame it is.

Take it from someone who really enjoys the manga....the Toriko anime is terrible. The pacing is horrible, with added filler and stretching up the wazoo, and the animation is really, really poor. Seriously, Toei is known for being cheap, but their work on Toriko takes cheap to a new level. And yeah, the graphic content is all pretty much taken out. Seriously, read Toriko vs. Tommyrod in the manga and compare it to the anime version. It's disappointing.

That said, Toriko could be a very mainstream series and a hit with kids, so I'd like it on Nicktoons or Vortexx in that regard. But, especially with the Big 3 on the block, I don't want it anywhere near Toonami. I want shorter, more "mature" or "diverse" shows, not a poorly animated adaption of the only other fun Jump manga I keep up with besides One Piece.

Extremely disappointed Toonami didn't pick up Tiger & Bunny considering that show is like fried gold dynamite and like a license to print money.

I mean don't people get it? Tiger & Bunny is like the anime version of The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes or Justice League Unlimited. It's perfect for the new Toonami. I just picked up the Figuarts of Wild Tiger at SDCC as well and its pretty awesome. I mean this show has tons of great merchandise and merchandising potential. I mean most of the merch are more adult-aimed collectibles, but considering that's the audience new-Toonami goes for, it makes a lot of sense.

GunXSword would be perfect if they need a shorter series.

Maybe the Toonami crew is aware of how perfect Tiger and Bunny is for the block, and are waiting for a perfect opportunity to pick it up. The line-up is really packed right now. And Naruto and One Piece were picked up over... a lot of other anime shows, not just Tiger and Bunny.

I wouldn't know for sure, but maybe.

If it's a budget, money thing I can understand. But seriously, this show is like tailor made for new-Toonami and really the perfect gateway anime for American/western audiences as well. It should be on Cartoon Network.

A little far fetched, but..Maybe the demos scared them off? If you look, in the West T&B is very popular in anime circles..Among women 14-25. Of course, it isn't aimed at them, but neither was Code Geass (then again, those CLAMP designs)
Either way, when something comes to the West, the demographics often shift significantly. Tiger and Bunny is a perfect fit, but since Toonami is in an alienated weekly slot where it is mostly people who already know what they're getting, or know of what they're getting. If they are aware of the show's image as yaoi fangirl bait, they might shy away.

Even if Tiger and Bunny essentially becomes "fangirl bait" during its run on the Toonami block, I'm sure the action in the show will still mesh well with other shows on the Toonami Block. If it's the perfect gateway anime, like TheVileOne said, T&B would impress viewers despite any rabbid fanbases T&B may or may not develop. After all, I'd like to believe people are still capable of enjoying a show while ignoring, or never-interacting-with a show's fanbase. Might be tough for some individuals, but it's doable.

Still. That'd be -crazy- if demo numbers scared off the Toonami crew... I'd like to imagine the quality of the show comes before demo numbers... but I know that's not always the case. Sadly.

Here's the talkback image for Sword Art Online for whoever is going to make the discussion threads:
