"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

While I would like to see them get something new in that timeslot instead of starting off the block with a rerun, I wouldn't be surprised if they go that route. Space Dandy has gotten really good ratings, it was probably quite expensive to get and they'd probably want to see how well the series does in reruns in that same slot to see if it would still be good to let Toonami keep it, as well as possibly get the whole 11PM hour slot.

This is another reason I question if Dandy iwll continue until season 2 in July. Toonami has not rerun any new series it has picked up since the relaunch outside of Naruto. Dandy likely cost significantly more than that, so it seems like they'd skip the rerun and go with something new (and likely cheaper) for the next few months instead of running already-seen product to start the block off with.

Of course we likely won't know what they decide for maybe a few hours if they get titan or a week or so, after Dandy's run ends.

Dandy's probably a special case because like I said, it's THE reason we got the 11:30pm timeslot in the first place. Nor does it probably cost them anything to rerun it when they confirmed they co-funded it.

I hadn't thought of how they haven't reaired the shows they pick up besides Naruto. Since Adult Swim helped to fund Space Dandy, it might be less of an issue to air those episodes again. I would prefer seeing something new start off the block instead of a rerun.

I'm not surprised that the second season of Space Dandy will air in July. They probably want to keep going with the world wide premieres, especially with how well the series has been doing in ratings.

I forgot about the co-funding thing, so yeah, they probably get some sort of sweetheart arrangement like they did with GitS or Big O 2. Thank you for reminding me.

That said, I'd still prefer something new take over in the slot and not just reruns. Isn't there a Q&A next week, or is this an "off" month? Seems like if nothing happens at the Titan panel, that would be when they tell us.

If Titan took over the slot, what would happen when Dandy returned? Titan is two seasons long. But when is that Panel?

This month is an off month. Next Q&A in April.

No Titan TV news at AB.

I asked Mike McFarland and he said last he heard there were "interested parties" (plural? there's other networks looking at it?) but nothing was finalized yet.

If Toonami gets it I'm guessing either a June expansion or a fall premiere in place of either Dandy or Bleach.

The DVD/Blu-ray version of AoT is slated for an early June release, so that rules out a TV broadcast around that time.

At this point, the earliest I could see AoT airing is in July alongside Dandy Season 2. Would probably require an 11pm expansion, but hey could happen.

According to zap2it Dandy will simply be rerunning at 11:30, so we won't be getting anything new yet seemingly. It could be a placeholder but I really doubt it. I guess it's a shame that Dandy is split up like that so this happens but oh well.

Dandy could repeat for a few weeks, before we get another new show to keep the 11:30 slot warm. Someone mentioned Girls Und Panzer being only 12 episodes. Just a thought.

Didn't SAO premiere on TV and DVD around the same time?

Yeah. In fact, the SAO DVDs passed the Toonami broadcast!

This is some news that has nothing to do with Toonami itself, but could still impact the block in a big way.

Twitter is removing hashtags.

Trending shows on Toonami helps count towards ratings and getting the word out. This is only on the rumor mill, but this may actually be true. The latest Toonami Faithful Podcast and recent trending rundowns have noted that keywords are popping up without the hashtag. This could be a problem in the future. Trending could become trickier, or even nonexistent, depending on what Twitter intends to do with it.

Wait, what? Isn't the hashtag Twitter's biggest cultural contribution? Aren't we bombarded with cheesy "#insertphrasehere" marketing techniques? Didn't a Dairy Queen ad just call a piece of chicken "Hashtag Delicious"? And they want to throw all that success away?

This is like McDonalds getting rid of the "M." I don't get it.

Other sites adopted the hashtag technique. It works on Facebook now.

Yes that would be shocking if true. The hashtag is Twitter's bread and butter. Incidentally, it wouldn't just affect Toonami but many other shows and things that rely on such metrics to gauge interest. It can be said without exaggeration that Twitter and hashtags are one of if not the biggest reason that Toonami was not only resurrected, but continues today.

I can't imagine they're going to do that unless they have something specific ready to replace it.

Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
