"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

Is this really that big a deal though? If you take away all the chicken littles running around here, there just cutting the excess fat off the block. Dumping reruns of shows nobody cares to watch (if you do allow me to direct you to a place called the internet) and making Toonami just a block of premiers kinda makes a lot of sense. If you think this is the beginning of the end then at least Toonami will go out with a bang as opposed to how it was just put out of its misery back in 08.

As much as a lot of us would like that to happen, [as] probably has safeguards out the butt to prevent Fox from ever moving their shows to FXX.

And even if they don't, it would seem that [as] would probably shell out anything to keep those shows. If not, at least FG.

As for Toonami, after some reflection, I honestly am not too upset about this. True, Toonami lost the back half of its block, and more pressure is put on the premieres. However, this might allow them to focus more on their premieres and also build up to more time rather than filling the rest with shows that have been reran to death. It might also help since now they won't have to figure out how to not get too repetitive.

I do have one question though: Could Toonami just rerun the premieres after they finish their first run, similar to what [as] does? This could possibly help and gel a lot easier than replacing the latter half with FOX reruns (if that is the course of action).

Did they lose the rights to Brotherhood and the original Naruto?

Yes, the rights to Brotherhood expired I think just last month and they couldn't get more of the original Naruto for quite some time. That's why they got Shippuden instead of more of uncut Naruto since it was finally available for them.

It's sad they are removing the 11:30 timeslot. It was the easiest part to watch toonami. All toonami fans, watch all of toonami to bring back our Bleach,AoT and Bebop. For now,I'm feeling that Toonami might Dissapear.:( I hope Toonami gets High Ratings.:) or we have to enjoy it and leave as it is.

Doesn't FXX have the Simpsons exclusively for reruns.

I think that exclusivity is only for as long as the show is still running and premiering new episodes. Once the Simpsons ends and goes to syndication, they'll be able to be picked up I believe by any network that flips the coin for it. I know that's why AS wants the Simpsons to end because as they even said in one of their "cards" that once it wraps up they want to show it.

I think what people like me are worried about though is that AS is using this as an excuse to gradually widdle away and totally off Toonami. Because yeah Toonami ended terribly in 2008 but that wasn't just an instant death: it was a gradual decline, from such things as the network cutting the hours and replacing the slot with various unrelated programming. And history sadly does have a bad habit of repeating itself which is what people don't want to happen here. I guess it is good that they're keeping the premieres at a still valuable timeslot and those are doing well but again just have to hope that holds and no other slots are cut.

It's not about what's easiest though: it's what gets the most ratings. That's why Jason said the block was losing hours: the ratings for those time periods weren't good so AS is replacing them with series that tend to do better which yeah are all the Syndicated FOX shows. That's why we're seeing them instead of seeing Toonami repeat. And also why you always see them repeat even more then regular original AS fare on other nights: they do best in the ratings. It's sad, but true.

Actually, FXX's deal with the Simpsons lasts 10 years from 2014 to 2023. They also paid $750 Million for it, which I doubt they would have paid if it was only "until the show ends" (which is actually becoming more possible with each passing year).

In case you were wondering what'll be airing from 3:30 to 6, here's what the backdoor schedule is showing this for 2/7:

3:30am - American Dad
4am - Rick and Morty
4:30am - Robot Chicken
5am - King of the Hill
5:30am - King of the Hill

Repeats from the pre-Toonami lineup, as expected. However, unlike previously expected, Attack on Titan won't be airing this Saturday as had been scheduled, the shows that would've been after it have been bumped up half an hour and IGPX stays on one more week at 4:30. I guess they figured there's no point in bringing Titan back just to take it off again the following week.

Well... I guess you gotta fill those last two-in-a-half hours with something (which is not to say I don't like any of those shows, but still).

Ya know, I think what's bothering me about all of this more than the reduction of hours, losing the 11:30 time slot, shuffling around shows and what-not is how this has all happened so suddenly. Business or not, this isn't the first time the programming block has been tugged around out of nowhere, having to make short-notice changes from letting go of shows being written off to sudden changes in overall line-up. Maybe this doesn't happen with just Toonami, but it's still frustrating.

Is it just me or is AS over reliant on the Fox shows. What are they going to do if Fox ever decides not to renew and put said shows on FXX with the Simpsons.

^^^ DING! DING! DING! ^^^

WE HAVE A WINNER!!!

Those are exactly my thoughts too. I wouldn't compare this to the way CN was treating the DC Nation block, since this is on [adult swim], however, like you, the FOX reruns take up too much of [AS]'s space for most of the time and it's part of the reason it has eaten up CN's regular schedule as well.

You know, I don't think it's that bad that it's only 3 1/2 hours now, because who in the world was gonna stay up til 3:30am-5am in the morning just to watch anime all night long??? Exactly, I think it's not a bad time for it to end, now had it been reduced to only 2 hours, then I would have been like, oh no..... This ain't good for the block, but 12am-3am is a reasonable amount of time. Of course, I preferred it better when it was the original 6 hour format, but even towards the end of the night, why was Samurai Jack or Sym-biotic Titan on Toonami towards the end of the the hours when Samurai Jack is a TV-Y7 show on [adult swim] plus nobody was gonna stay up that late seriously. I think it's find but it better stay at 3 1/2 hours and not get reduced anymore or else I'll be worried about this block again. My goal for this block is to at least get to its 20th anniversary in 2017.

I have a feeling a big part of AS's budget is keeping those shows on constant renewal and making sure their contracts never run out. Seriously up to at least 7/10 of every night of programming are FOX series reruns. And the parts that aren't usually aren't even at the prevelent viewing hours. Because I have a feeling if for some reason those shows no longer are buyable AS is going to get some major shrinkage and perhaps go back to not even being on every single night. I mean there's a backlog of original content but... not only do the FOX series have more episodes but apparently if ratings is the reasons the anime are going, I can't see reruns of some of their older series generating much prolonged interest.

Sadly I did comment on this before that AS taking the 5AM slot made no sense for comedy shows at all and what did they expect Toonami would get at that hour. I think what people are fearful, as am I, is that AS is just using this as an excuse to snuff out Toonami and action series in general form the line up And point at ratings and say certain shows just get more watches and thus cut the block down because of it. Since yeah I remember back when the original Toonami was gutted on Saturday night to two hours instead of four and the reasoning of that. Of course to be fair at least the schedule is still decent and honestly focused on just having premieres and variety at least of programs. It's not just an hour of Naruto and a couple other random series like Toonami was in it's last dying days. I would like to be positive in the block still going well and maybe one day claiming those spots back but... AS has been rather stubborn in once it has a FOX series at a certain time, not really changing it out unless it's for another FOX series. Though again that isn't just bad news for Toonami but for Cartoon Network in general: I guarantee you if AS ever gets the Simpsons, CN is going to at least loose it's 7PM hour. Maybe more honestly.

Oh don't even remind us.

Well, at least IGPX should be on their On Demand section for another week. I don't know if they'll keep updating it after the schedule change, but I can see if it's available on Adult Swim's website or just get the series on DVD if all else fails. I'm okay with Attack on Titan not airing this Saturday. There wouldn't be much of a point in bringing it back for one more week at this point and keeping the block mostly rerun free right now might be good in the long run.

I still think that losing those hours is really bad. While there might not be a lot of people able to stay up for the whole block, there probably were people who woke up early on Sundays who could catch a bit of the end of the block. Besides that, those hours gave them more time to work with in regards to their premieres. Now they have even less time to provide new shows given that three of the slots are locked up for years.

personally the problem is toonami is playing things people have already seen through dvds or online medias why watch something with commericals you already seen and might even own on dvd bleach pretty much all permire on tv from the beginning and the dvd are now catching up at least that my toughts on this.

I don't think that's too much of a problem. I'm pretty sure that Bleach was legally available subbed and that didn't affect its ratings. Same with Attack on Titan. In this day and age, most anime titles are going to be legally available online and/or on DVD. Toonami doesn't have the budget to get more recent series that haven't been released completely on DVD yet. Not to mention that would give them a shorter amount of shows to choose from.

Not only the anime can be seen online and/or DVD nowadays, but a lot can be seen on Netflix too.

The only thing I'd look forward after 3:30 is Rick and Morty, but then I'd have to suffer through American Dad to get to it.

I don't see how this is supposed to get better ratings then Bebop, GiTS, IGPX, Samurai Jack, etc. At least Bebop was kinda new, HD and uncensored.

Ok let me say this:The Simpsons is first a Adult Friendly but also a FAMILY friendly cartoon. Neither CN,AS,Or Boomerang will air this!
CN:Has some Adult Content.
AS:Only Likes cancelled Fox Cartoons and Seth Mcfarlane Cartoons. Also,it's Fox's Gem toon. Plus,Doesn't it air on FXX?!
Boomerang:Same thing With CN,Has Some Adult Content.
Plus Adult Swim is Going downhill,so CN may get at least 8pm back.

Toonami has lost hours, gained hours, lost them again and got em back all throughout its history. This is no different. Its not like they were doing anything with those hours anyways. Its one thing to show anime that's already been released on every possible platform, but its hard to get away with showing reruns in the wee hours of the morning. What protest can possible be offered for keeping those hours?

Since Toonami won't be airing them, the final two episodes of Samurai Jack are now up on Adult Swim's website. (Scroll to the bottom.) No cable login required.

Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
