"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

I've been pushing for Yu Yu Hakusho, but it seems shorter older shows are more likely, so I hope to see the original Tenchi Muyo! OVAs again, this time (almost) uncut. Of course, Jason and crew might be a bit skeptical of anything Tenchi after GXP, but that was an exceptional disaster compared to the rest of the series.

Looking at the article, someone made the mistake of [as] removing Toonami from 2008. Oops!

I see Toonami for sure going on for a bit longer. Linear itself is still slowly phasing out, but even in Toonami's off nights, and even in the numerous times we've seen decreases and increases see-saw, the block still holds out well on its own. I'll continue enjoying this gift while it's here to us. Additionally to bring back up, with six new shows in production, two of them known, while numbers to many who may base opinions on that may not look to great, I'd say for the most part they'd hold their own and help the block. As linear slowly phases, so do ratings/shares. Many shows on prime time are pulling under 1.0 and being renewed. For [as] to have some 0.3s and 0.2s?.... Great and steady for a Saturday night of all nights for the number crunchers (including myself for fun). That's something to appreciate. As Demarco has stressed a lot, Toonami's fine.

Did a little bit of fun on a spreadsheet. OG Toonami ran from March 17th, 1997 to September 20th, 2008. Including the many days it wasn't active, that total of days was 4,206. From the point of it's actual return May 26th, 2012, not counting the April Fools gig then, by November 30th, 2023, though a Thursday, and obviously not as many broadcasts with 0 dailies, it'd tie the active day mark by then, to where December 1st, a Friday, if Toonami is still at least active, the record breaks there, and [as] will have shown it in a longer span of time.

If you want to count April 1st of 2012, then just a bit earlier, The 4,206th day would be Friday October 6th, with October 7th, a Saturday, meaning a Toonami broadcast, that's when the record breaks. All up to one's opinion to take April 1st or May 26th. However, if going by April 1st, that Saturday October 7th, 2023 Toonami could have a notice of them surpassing OG Toonami.

When they make it to March of 2022, it'll be 25 years since the launch of Toonami, and in May of 2022, it'll be 10 years since the relaunch of Toonami on Adult Swim.

And yes, going by "length of time" (with original Toonami lasting from 3/17/97 to 9/20/08, which equals 11 and 1/2 years), if Adult Swim Toonami lasts until December of 2023, it'll tie the original Toonami, in "length of time on the air".

But I'm really wondering about the state of cable TV by then. This can't last forever....

Still wondering how Toonami is going to be like as existing isn't the same as thriving. It could return to being mostly reruns like the initial 2012 except with occasional originals. For 2020, the production delays explain this. We still have hope of shows already dubbed but haven't aired on Toonami, like isekai stuff. Maybe 2021 will be a good year. Wondering if Toonami will have another Renaissance and the originals become Samurai Jack level hits or if Toonami becomes like ASA post anime crash as a shell of its former self. At least that era gave us Death Note, Code Geass, FMA Brotherhood so 2008-10 ASA wasn't that bad. Those shows and 2011s Durarara were huge with hardcore anime fans but flopped in ratings (except Brotherhood, the only non Bleach hit of the period, which unfortunately almost destroyed the block. Once Durarara and Brotherhood ended, it was Bleach and reruns and almost on death's door. We could see another crash and have history repeat, but that rebirth could also repeat. Even if we get a dark age, we could still get a gem or two as even the "dark ages" of 2008-April 2012 had a few gems. Let's wait until Demon Slayer's replacement to see which direction the block is going.

I think we're heading towards another "Dark Age", but that's okay, as you pointed out, even during the 2008 to 2011 "Dark Age", there was still some good gems. Toonami better find their new "Bleach" though, to help get them through the period.

Random Thought: You mention "Death Note", but I don't think of that as part of the "Dark Age". I think of it as the last anime of "Classic" Adult Swim Action (from 2002 to 2008). I tie it in with the death of Toonami in 2008 (the last episode of "Death Note" was in July 2008, "Classic Toonami" ended in September 2008). So the "Dark Age" for Adult Swim Action (and for anime on TV in general) doesn't begin until after Death Note concluded.

I would like to see those series re-air as well. They both look fantastic in HD and still hold up to this day. And since their so old I doubt they would be anywhere near as expensive as the current shows. YYH would take up one of the slots for over 2 years but plenty of other Shonen Jump titles have ran for longer with decent to low ratings so its not really a big deal. I don't know what they they were thinking airing GXP since many Tenchi fans view it as the worst in the franchise. The rest of the series shouldn't be written off because they assumed people would be nostalgic for a poorly received spinoff rather than the beloved original.

Disappointed that they won't be airing Food Wars season 3 this month but hopefully they can negotiate for the rights soon. They probably have to wait until after Hidive streams all the dub episodes. August is probably the earliest it can premiere on Toonami if that's the case.

Acquiring Paranoia Agent again is unexpected. I watched it when it first aired on Adult Swim but I don't remember much about it other than being one of their most bizzare, confusing and dark series. I will probably rewatch it see if I get a better grasp for it this time around.

They could always get the Bleach - Thousand Year Blood War anime that is coming out later this year or even Burn the Witch which is set in the same universe.

I thought that the new Bleach anime was coming out next year. The current virus situation might also factor into delaying the production. I'm sure that it will come to Toonami eventually, but it might be awhile, especially when it still might take some time for Viz to dub the series.

Yeah, Bleach hasn't been given a time frame for its return yet. I wouldn't expect it to air on Toonami until 2022.

Also, we can disqualify Burn the Witch, it's a movie.

MHA is ending pretty soon and it seems we are out of AAA shonen to replace it. We know Bleach kept ASA afloat during its dark ages. The coronavirus will probably delay production of anything big. Haven't even heard any announcements for a big long running shonen that has lots of hype. I think the plan was for a perma runner like Boruto to carry Toonami, which was probably why it was put above MHA when it premiered. We know now it seemed to flop and they decided on MHA instead. Black Clover can't lead the block and Adult Swim makes bumpers mocking fans who want it moved up in the block and saying it will always be in the back. As for the one recent shonen that hasn't aired, Radiant, seems really unpopular with a mediocre 6.92 myanimelist score. Anime News Network only reviewed the first 16 episodes and said it was average yet not popular enough to continue reviewing. They almost never leave a shonen unreviewed. It probably wouldn't be a big hit, but might be the only option with so little shonen. I think it has about 52 episodes, so it might at least fill time until MHA season 5 comes.

My memory was wrong then. I thought they said it would later this year. Does anyone know if Viz has ever done a simudub before? To bad about Burn the Witch. I thought we were going to get a nice 13 episode series for it. I wonder if they would air Tiger & Bunny since it is getting a second season.

I thought Burn the Witch was getting a new limited manga series, too, and I figured a small one season series eventually?

The limited series manga is correct, but the anime season thing was just a rumor. They later clarified it would just be a movie. But it makes sense; the the manga is only, say, ten chapters, that would be too short for even a 12 episode anime.

Not surprising, but also a long wait too, though in general, that time will end up getting here before we know it. Already 3rd part of April.

Maybe I'll give it a second try. I stopped around episode 3 or 4. Maybe if I record it enough to binge, I could possibly start to enjoy it.

Still though, even if 5:30 AM, definitely take what's given.

If I'm not mistaken... I think this'll be the first anime to have a 5:30 AM daily since... InuYasha?

It is understandable to delay The Promised Neverland's next season in Japan, but it's still a bit disappointing. Hopefully that will help all of the production team stay safe and healthy. I wouldn't be surprised if My Hero Academia's fifth season is delayed until next year as well. They usually don't announce a date after the initial announcement anyway, but waiting until next year would be the safest option for that production crew too.

I'm glad to hear that My Hero Academia is getting a weekday run. It is at a pretty brutal timeslot, but having some anime outside of Toonami and Saturday night is still a pretty big deal.
