In comics Gotham is near Metropolis, not sure about the TV show though and I believe (this might be wrong) that the Titans are in San Francisco.

If I'm not mistaken, it's entirely possible that both Gotham City and Metropolis would occupy the same geographical location in our world. Metropolis would emphasize a city's cheery exterior, while Gotham would be the seedy underbelly.

New York City comes to mind as the real-world city our two fictitious cities are based upon.

The animated Titans should be living in Jump City (by the Teen Titans GO! comic)

I don't remember the city the original Titans were in, but since the GO! Titans are the same Titans as the animated Titans, I've assumed it's Jump City.

I've always had the impression that Gotham and Metropolis are very close to each other, almost like how NYC and NJ are a hop, skip, and a jump away from each other.

Having just purchased and watching Starcrossed the other day, I believe that someone stated (while in Metropolis) that they were only 30 miles from Gotham City and Bruce's Mansion.

Yeah, Bruce mentions it.

They don't flat-out say the city they were in was Metropolis, but I think there's a clip of the Thanagarians standing on the Daily Planet that is meant to indicate that.

It does make me wonder why Bruce couldn't just call Alfred to pick them up, though.

According to The Atlas of the DC Universe, Gotham City is in New Jersey and Metropolis is in Delaware.

Obviously, different continuities take certain liberties on this type of thing. Smallville places Metropolis in Kansas, for example. And Batman Forever seems to replace New York City with Gotham City. At least, that's the impression I got from the "Lady Gotham" statue.

In real life, "Gotham" is another name for New York City, like Manhattan.

In the comics, the Titans were based in New York City. They're definitely not on the West Coast, since that's what the group "Titans West" was for.

Gotham in NJ, and Metropolis in Delaware?? I, personally, always thought that Metropolis was around NYC, and Gotham was a little south of it (and Bludhaven was southwest of that, as well). Never envisioned Metropolis in Delaware, coming from someone that lived in northern Delaware. The closest city I could think of that's that far north might be Delaware City, but Metropolis is so not emulating Delaware City. Anyway.

I don't follow the animated one, but Kryten was referring to the mainstream series. I can only confirm it because I read Superman/Batman #7, and it shows Robin and Superboy meeting with Batman and Superman on the roof of Titans Tower with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background.

In fact, there's even one of those little lines on the first panel that tells you the location of the scene. It reads "TITANS TOWER. SAN FRANSISCO. MIDNIGHT."

The current arc in the Batman title has also made references to Robin taking a plane to go with the Titans. I don't remember if it specifically named San Fransisco or California, though.

I've always just assumed that every fictional comic book city is based off New York, which is the number one cliched choice for a crime-infested city.

Though I believe in the DCAU, Gotham is the only one to actually have the statue of liberty (or Lady Gotham) in its port, as seen in the BTAS episode Off Balance. That would make it the replacement for New York.

I always saw that also, New York older and richer in history, Chicago a younger city known for its skyscrapers, made sense to me. I didn't know the DCU geographical locations before reading this post, but I guess it was an editorial decision. To keep the actual cities like New York and not have them clash geographically with the fictional cities created for the comic books.

I always imagined Metropolis being very close to Smallville, Kansas. So, as others have already surmised, the logical choice would be Chicago. How about Blüdhaven? I figure that would be in NJ. Does the atlas say Gotham and Blüdhaven are both in that state?
