Up to now, when asked if there would be a sequel to the summer blockbuster Superman, DC Studios emperor James Gunn played coy, even though it was obvious there would be one. Today he admitted it, blatantly, by simply posting the title to social media along with a curious sketch. Look for Man Of Tomorrow July 9, 2027.
The sketch in question was done by Jim Lee, current Chief Creative Officer of DC Comics. It depicts a scowling Lex Luthor in a power suit, raising his fist at a cocky-looking Superman who happens to be holding a screwdriver. “Curses…a screwdriver! The power suit’s worst adversary!”
Minutes later, Superman actor David Corenswet posted THIS sketch to his Insta, which was drawn by Jorge Jimenez and runs along similar themes:
Now they appear to be working together. We’d guess the plot of Man Of Tomorrow is that there’s a cosmic threat that Superman and Lex can only defeat as one, creating a mismatched Odd Couple with lots of humor milked from the tension between them.
That wasn’t all, though…a third sketch went up on the account of Nicholas Hoult, rendered by Mitch Gerads:
And they’re back to slugging it out. This partnership is definitely going to be difficult to pull off!
Even though 2027 is pretty far away, we know a bit about what Man Of Tomorrow‘s competition will be. Mostly, animated movies that have been repeatedly delayed like Beyond The Spider-Verse and Shrek 5…unless they are delayed again. A Quiet Place Part III is currently the only tentpole the film is slotted directly against.
Superman was released July 8 in theaters and stars Corenswet, Hoult, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Sara Sampaio, Maria Gabriela de Faria, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Neva Howell, Beck Bennett, Mikaela Hoover and Christopher McDonald. We don’t know how many of these people will be returning for the sequel, but at least Supes and Lex are a lock. Man Of Tomorrow opens July 9, 2027
