The Smurfs is definitely a franchise that has had quite the influence in the entertainment industry. Starting out as a comic book series in 1958 by Pierre Culliford (better known by his pen name Peyo), the franchise has spawned many TV shows, movies, and so much more. Now The Smurfs are making their big theatrical comeback in a movie simply called Smurfs. The movie will be released in the summer on July 18, 2025. Here’s everything that you need to know about it.
Smurfs follows the lives of The Smurfs, most notably Smurfette. When Papa Smurf is mysteriously taken by evil wizards, Razamel and Gargamel, Smurfette leads the Smurfs on a mission into the real world in order to save him. With the help of some new friends, the Smurfs must discover what defines their destiny in order to save the universe.
Smurfette will be voiced by Rhianna. She’s not only the lead voice actor and songwriter, but is also producing the move alongside Ryan Harris, Laurence “Jay” Brown, and Tyran “Ty-Ty” Smith. John Goodman is attached to voice Papa Smurf. While it’s unknown who will be playing what characters, the rest of the star studded cast includes Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, J. P. Karliak, Dan Levy, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, James Corden, Octavia Spencer, Hannah Waddingham, Sandra Oh, Alex Winter, Billie Lourd, Xolo Maridueña, and Kurt Russell.
Smurfs will be written by Pam Brady (known for writing on South Park and Ruby Gillman: Teenage Krakken) and directed by Chris Miller (who previously worked at DreamWorks Animation on the Madagascar and Shrek franchises) and Matt Landon (who worked on Spies In Disguise).
