Are we actually staring at a sixth season for the long-cancelled Star Wars The Clone Wars? The show that everyone thought would never be completed is actually getting the chance. What suddenly made Disney feel so charitable?
A upcoming streaming app combined with a need for buzzworthy content did the trick. Star Wars The Clone Wars had been running for four seasons on Cartoon Network when Lucasfilm was sold to Disney and the TV plans for the franchise suddenly changed. The in-progress Season 5 was banished to Netflix upon completion and the Clone Wars crew was moved to Star Wars Rebels.
Now a 12-episode final season has been ordered in a move fans thought would never happen. Perhaps executive producer Dave Filloni thought it wouldn’t happen either — some of the questions left hanging in Clone Wars were already answered in Rebels. We know Ahsoka lives, and we know Darth Maul survives up to the era of New Hope. Filloni is VERY pleased to get the chance to finish his original plan, however:
“Personally, it’s very rewarding. Any opportunity to put the final pieces of the story in place is meaningful as a storyteller. I’m happy for the opportunity to define these things and the end of this part of the Clone War.”
Clone Wars’ new season will involve Ahsoka reuniting with Anakin for one last mission: the Siege at Mandalore, where Darth Maul reigns (for now). Star Wars The Clone Wars Season 6 will premiere in 2019 on Disney’s still-unnamed and mysterious streaming service, and it will look like this:
