What were some of the challenges of making the Spider-man game? What tricks had to be used to complete it?
The Spider-Man game from Insomniac was one of the biggest hits of last year, and one of the most popular things about the game was the large version of Manhattan that people got to traverse. However, as the senior engine programmer Elan Ruskin noted on Twitter, there was one problem that occurred very early in the game, and that required a fix that needed to happen:
Also from our #GDC19 tech postmortem: the transition into Fisk Tower in #SpiderManPS4‘s intro mission. The interior space is much larger than the exterior envelope, and too big to hold in memory at the same time as Manhattan. So we use some careful camerawork to hide the swap!
Just goes to show that sometimes you have to break reality in order to keep something fixed.
