Why aren't Blu-Ray drives standard on PCs yet? I looked at what Costco was selling these days and they all still have just DVD drives in there.

I dunno, I figure all optical drives in general are on their way out, so they're probably going with what's cheapest.

It's justified. Most people don't understand smart, savvy, innovative things because they're simply not smart enough to get them. Community is better than 2 Broke Girls. It's a scientific fact.

I fully agree that it's better, but I still like both. It's just two different flavors of sitcom, dumb quippy multi-camera, dry cerebral single camera.

And I think Starbro is talking about people who use that "You're just too dumb to get it" thing as an insult when they can't think of another way to defend a show. I agree that's annoying. I get a lot of things that I don't like just fine.

The best smart person trick, though, is to pretend you're so smart that you "get" stupid things and see things in them that other people don't. Look at academic critiques of "outsider" art, or people who write highfalutin' essays about Ed Wood movies. If I was a (bigger) jerk I could write this giant essay about the things you're missing in 2 Broke Girls and rig the game in such a way that no one could win an argument with me about it. But I'll spare the drama and admit I just love dumb sitcoms and big boobs.

Laptop or desktop? The desktops I was looking at all came with one standard, but they were marketed as "home theater PCs" or "entertainment PCs".

Even though I personally don't consider them dumb, some would probably call my liking of Michael Bay's Transformers films as a guilty pleasure.

Am I the only one who gets annoyed when fans of something say to or about non-fans of said thing that "Anyone who doesn't like so-and-so just doesn't get it!"? While sometimes that can indeed be the case (I'll probably never understand the fascination with Adventure Time), too often the expression is used as the rallying cry of the egomaniacal fanboy/girl. It's as if these people can't fathom that everyone's tastes are different and there's no possible conceivable way that someone can not be into something which they're a fan of, so if someone says they don't like this thing, then it must be ignorance or lack of education on the non-fan's part.

There are plenty of things which I get just fine, but I'm still not into.

I've been guilty of this but not anymore. I learned a long time ago that just because I like something or see the brilliance of it, doesn't mean everyone else does/has to. But it does bring up a similar situation: Am I the only one who hates it when people talk badly about a show or film that they've obviously never watched? You can tell because they either can't name something that happens on the show or film or make up an over-exaggerated scene that you know isn't true.

Exactly.

Far too often, people use "you just don't get it" as a thinly veiled passive-aggressive way of insulting people with a differing opinion than their own; what these people really want to say is "You're just stupid. There must be something wrong with you if you don't like this. I like it, therefore it must be great, and anyone who disagrees with me or feels differently is obviously a moron."

I fancy myself to be a pretty smart person, and I like what I like. Simple as that. I'm not too brainy and full of myself to appreciate something simplistic and just plain mindless fun, nor am I too uncultured and unwashed to understand something deep and artistic. It doesn't matter if it's smart, dumb, artsy and abstract, simple and to-the-point, if it entertains me and I find myself wanting more, then I like it. If the opposite is true, then I don't. Period.

That reminds me of how an episode of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air had a scene spoofing Shaft. Six years later, I told a friend how I didn't get the joke since I never even knew about Shaft even back then. I don't know how it slipped past me, but the guy just totally berated me about it.

Earlier in this thread, I even discussed how at work, I said that the first live action Transformers movie was all right, and totally got chewed out for it. It's not like I said it flat out sucked. I still enjoyed the movie. I even enjoyed it enough to get the DVD when it came out. I guess I just didn't feel the same buzz that most other people did.

I, for one, would recommend The Princess Bride. Better late than never, you know what I mean?

In all fairness, I can see myself playing the you-just-don't-get-it card on someone, but only if their comments are ignorant, shallow, and closed-minded.

Doesn't sound like they were all that good of friends with you to begin with if something as simple as not having seen a movie they have was enough to break up a friendship. Either that, or they're incredibly petty.

When will people learn that not everyone has seen the exact same movies you have? If you ask, "Have you seen ______?" and the other person responds with a no, don't make a big deal out of it. Just say that it's worth seeing (or not, if it's bad).

In my opinion, I think you do. Over the last year, and possibly longer, the majority of DVDs that I bought were TV show DVDs.

While new prime time show season set releases can be expensive when first released, new releases of some cartoon/kids' show season sets, which are a large part of the TV show DVDs I tend to buy, can cost about the same, though sometimes a little higher, as new movie releases on DVD.

However, if you wait for a while, some prime time show season sets can go down to a great price. For example, a couple of days ago, when my mom and I were at our local Wal-Mart, I saw they had several show season sets, like Gilligan's Island, The Dukes of Hazard, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Friends, Star Gate SG-1, and Smallville, for $10-$15.

Unless it's a movie I'm extremely interested in, I don't tend to buy movies on DVD, if's not around $10 or less. Otherwise, I prefer to use that money on a TV show DVD set.

Since my DVD collection consists more of TV shows than movies, I might concur. I don't have a problem buying movies that are over $10 though, as long as they have a reasonable price.
