The Toonami Thread

Well, that was a surprise. I didn't find out about this until this morning. While I don't have that much of an attachment to the Toonami block, I kind of feel bad that I missed seeing at least some of this last night, if only to see some of these older shows for the heck of it. But I checked out the bumpers and it looked pretty cool. I liked how they had Tom mention the DVDs for most of the shows that aired last night. I don't know if this was test for bringing back Toonami or if Adult Swim wanted to go all out for April Fools' Day for a change of pace, but it was nice little treat for the fans of the block and of these shows.

Honestly I do not like this joke, Toonami was the block of TV that most of us grew up with that block
disappointed.gif

The joke is that they faked people out and aired something as opposite "The Room" as possible. That's all it is, and well played. Nothing bad or mean about it.

But there will be people bothered, and rightfully so, by this because they'll see it as a tease of something Cartoon Network doesn't plan on bringing back.

One thing I'd like to know, could Toonami survive with less viewers who are younger?
Just fine, probably.

The problem Toonami kept having at Cartoon Network was that it didn't skew young enough. They got a lot of teenagers and adults, but not as much with the younger viewers. When CN was an all-ages network, that wasn't a big issue. When Adult Swim launched and CN began to refashion itself as more of a kids network, it was. That's why it got moved off weekdays, and probably why the last look featured cute, Pixar-y robots.

They'll target a teens and up demographic and clearly brand it as part of Adult Swim. Just like they did last night on the Bleach promo.

One thing that's been lost in all the hubbub is that the Toonami intro also made its return last night. They weren't as long as traditionally (they were about 15-seconds long as opposed to 30) but every show but Bleach got one and the only reason why Bleach didn't get one was because it kept its original opening for the night.

This took effort and love. Respect.

Exactly my point! This was elaborately done, and why I'm not so sure this was completely intended as a gag. AS likes to bait the fans, so if it was a joke, they would have slapped together a hodgepodge of ancient packaging around their current anime and/or a bunch of DBZ. Or make Toonami bumps for their comedies. ("Check it Out with Dr. Steve Brule, only Toonami.") Something that would rile people up.

This wasn't that, though. It was 100% authentic. Yeah, a lot of the CG and elements were recycled from the 04 look (the best one to pick, IMO), but that was the only thing that didn't seem new. They made new promos, got Steve in to do new voiceovers, made new Toonami intros for everything, and even reworked an image promo. And the programming mix was brilliant. You needed to get DBZ, Gundam, Tenchi, and Outlaw Star (clearly the biggest hit of the night). But Blue Sub was a great out of left field choice. Including Bleach and Trigun as Toonami shows was a brilliant choice because they just fit perfectly. The only thing I'd classify is a glaring omission is Thundercats. But I'm not complaining that we got Astro Boy and Gigantor. And above that, there were new episode premieres and less edited cuts in there as well. Even if some of them were freebie airings in exchange for DVD plugs, the lineup was meticulously chosen.

This was so well planned and so well thought out that I never thought it was a joke. I saw it as a celebration of what made it great and a way to test the waters for a return. I don't see how you go as far as making a new game review without a thought at least in the back of the head of following it up somehow.

Like how All That etc aired on Nick and was aimed at kids, but "The 90's are all that" is on TeenNick and aimed at teenagers.
That brings up the only possible caveat with this.

The TeenNick 90s block is a retro block. It gets viewers for nostalgia. Toonami's return was so well received in large part because of the nostalgia.

If they bring it back for good, Toonami can't be a nostalgia block. It has to have new shows and introduce the audience to new things like it always has. It can't coast on people's nostalgic feelings for DBZ. That is going to be the real challenge here. But I think last night proves that a Toonami on Adult Swim would work.

Steve (Tom) just confirmed this was only a one night thing, a test so to speak, but he encouraged people to thank Cartoon Network and Adult Swim and let them know how much we appreciated it.

"Yo, Toonami Faithful... Thanks for tuning in. Hope it kicked in some happy memories and kicked off a happy April! As you (hopefully) know, bringing Toonami back isn't up to me."

In other words, if the ratings were good (I'm confident they were) and there will be enough pressure, ehm positive feedback, from fans... Toonami on Adult Swim might become a permanent real thing.

This is our chance. We can bring Toonami back. For real this time. Let's do it!

I'd like to add that respectful snail mail to CN's HQ is infinitely more powerful than e-mail and social media.

I'd also like to add that going through Adult Swim feedback channels, rather than just Cartoon Network, would work as well or even better since they're the ones who aired it - and presumably the ones who would be airing it should it return.

Both the CN and AS facebooks are SWAMPED with Toonami comments.

Yeah, as I said in the AS thread, I'm starting to think this was an excuse to dip their toe in.

Honestly? I think the most part of the Toonami nostalgia is the bumps and promos. I know users of a certain site have criticized people for thinking this, but that Bleach promo was actually pretty great. And that's what's great about Toonami. It's works incredibly well as a brand and using that brand to spice up their bread 'n' butter Adult Swim Anime block would be one of the best moves CN have had in Action programming terms for a while.

I agree. Toonami was about TOM and Sarah and the banter and the atmosphere, even more so than the shows. Because there were so many shows. I think ASA in any incarnation would probably be better received with Toonami packaging. Bleach, Durarara (and if they were to pick something up, for instance) Eureka Seven AO would be as good choices for Toonami as any.

My friend kept talking about how much he felt he could plug in Gurren Lagaan stuff into the "Dreams" video and I kind of agree with him. It would have been pretty awesome if GL had aired on a Toonami like this.

Toonami on AS could just be the best thing ever. A way to get what everybody has wanted for so long.

Whoa, check this out!

The "Toonami" status on Adult Swim's Facebook page currently has an insane amount of 19,321 likes, 5,820 comments and 527 shares! - the highest they ever got actually.

If this won't convince Adult Swim and Cartoon Network, I don't know what will.

I just want to say "Hah!" to all the people who should be eating their words for ever saying that they would never go out of their way to air old Toonami programming and/or pre-TOM4 bumpers ever again. To be fair I didn't really think they would either (get old shows at least) but this is a testament to just how awesome at least some of the Williams Street and/or Cartoon Network employees still are.

Amen to that! Especially since they went to all that effort to give Toonami a very Faithful return last night. Simply wonderful, and worth the effort. :tom:

All the Toonami on Adult Swim stuff, gathered into a single video. Have fun...

And what the heck, sure. I'll write CN a pro-Toonami message tomorrow. You never know.

Well, there are some people who basically just equate Toonami to DBZ. (or to Sailor Moon, Gundam, Voltron, et al.) Any new Toonami can't just live off of DBZ reruns; it needs new stuff. And yes, I think the most logical move is to turn Adult Swim Anime into Toonami. The anime shows on AS have always struggled under the shadow of the comedies; this would give them an identity. And even things like the video game reviews would be an asset. Since most AAA games are M-Rated, they can walk up to Activision and say "hey, we're gonna cover the new Call of Duty, give us money". HUGE potential for revenue just from that.

But I agree - a HUGE part of what made Toonami so special was the look and feel. Nothing on television looked quite like Toonami did. The music wasn't loud screeching guitars, the viewers weren't talked down to, and they managed to make every show they got the coolest thing ever. Even the replacement opens worked. I was introduced to Robotech through Toonami, and though I love the Robotech soundtrack that Toonami opening was absolutely epic.

I think a large part of the nostalgia extends to CN's look and feel during that era as well. I've said it many times, and I'm gonna say it again. From 1997 to around 2002, Cartoon Network produced some of the greatest television promotions and branding ever. You WANTED to watch the commercials because more often than not something genius would appear during the break. The promos were as good as what they were promoting, almost always absurdly creative, and more often than not downright hilarious. Toonami was a crucial part of that, and even though it didn't go for humor it was absolutely the coolest thing ever.

The way the network has evolved - good and bad - has only served to make this period that more special. The network's promotion hasn't been that consistently stellar since that peak, and odds are it won't ever reach that peak again. It's not an indictment of the network's current direction in any way. I'm sure a lot of the people who were behind those great bumps are still there. They've produced some great stuff, like the "city" and the noods. And those Toonami bumpers aired last night - going on eight years old now(!) - have aged remarkably well. It's just hard to reach that level of perfection. That they managed to reach that level - and sustain it for a good five years - is simply awe inspiring.

I didn't find out about this until this morning, and I can't believe I missed this opportunity to relive my childhood. I was upset about this all day lol. I really miss Toonami. Ah, the memories. I hope it comes back full time in the future.

I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but Toonami and Cartoon Network (among the shows that were airing) were trending on Twitter last night.

That was really awesome and it was worldwide.

Today marks the 15th Year Anniversary of ThunderCats (2011). While I find it unfortunate that the show was canceled before it had a chance to finish its story, I am glad that the show's art director was willing to give fans closure via a podcast interview.
Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
