Wow, those are some of the best ratings late nigh Adult Swim has seen in forever.

For just Saturday? It sadly did not even come close to Star Wars night back in February. That was heavily advertised though.
It did however beat the usual ASA numbers with absolutely no advertisement and that along with ratings potential from some advertisement seems to be enough to push for a Toonami revival.
Interesting thing to note about AS Video. Bleach is finally streaming on it and 4-5 episodes of Durarara, GitS, Big O, FMAB and Cowboy Bebop are streaming free as well. They ended up skipping episodes of everything except Bleach this past Saturday and they skipped two episodes of Durarara on this run. I guess they either did not notice or they are more concerned with getting to the end of DRR and Kekkaishi sooner. But that combined with the video streams returning has me thinking they might drop some shows mid run so maybe they will practically clean the slate but I still do not expect them to spend a lot of money on acquisitions for Toonami.

Normally 500k would be really good for Bleach, right? So ASA pretty much doubled viewership for a vague event that almost nobody even guessed, and even then only on the internet?

No you're thinking of the 18-34 ratings not the total viewers 2+ which is all we get to see these days.
The total viewer ratings for Bleach is usually about a million. So it did as expected but DBZ retained ratings better than most anime do following Bleach and other than Star Wars night it's been a while since 700,000 viewers were watching Saturday at 3 AM.

Let's Do the Numbers
First of all, much thanks to Paradox for posting that awesome chart.
Bleach
Over the previous four weeks Bleach averaged 902,750 viewers. Bleach's Toonami rating for the night was 1,010,000 viewers, a 12% increase over the four week average. Pretty good I'd say. It should be noted that Bleach hit 1,003,000 the third Saturday of the month, and the Toonami total doesn't top that by much. However, the Toonami total is significantly higher than the couple of weeks in March when Bleach was in the 800,000s. The four week average helps to smooth out the variations.
Dragonball Z
Dragonball Z held onto 99%, or essentially all, of Bleach's viewers. That is amazing and a big bump from Fullmetal's four week average of 80% retention. A lot of it was probably the curiosity factor of what would happen next, but just the fact that that many people were interested is significant in itself.
Gundam Wing
Gundam Wing retained 81% of DBZ's viewers (and 80% of Bleach's viewers). A bigger drop than DBZ's but still impressive considering that Durarara is on average only holding onto 63% of Bleach's viewers at this point. Gundam Wing's 806,000 total viewers is higher than anything else non-Bleach on Adult Swim Action in March (outside of a a couple Fullmetal episodes) and close to Bleach's ratings for a couple of Saturdays in March.
Tenchi Muyo!
At this point some comparisons get trickier since time slots no longer match up, but we can still track audience retention, and I may run some other numbers anyway. Tenchi Muyo! retained 96% of Gundam Wing's viewers (and 77% of Bleach's viewers). No big dropoff here, especially compared to Gundam Wing's drop. Apparently the rather confusing episode didn't chase away viewers. (I can't say I could follow what was going on all that well, but it was cool anyway). Also, the total viewers (769,000) still beats most everything on ASA in March (see Gundam Wing).
Outlaw Star
Outlaw Star retained 102% of Tenchi Muyo!'s viewers (and 78% of Bleach's viewers). It should be noted before I get too much further that retention of Bleach's viewers assumes viewers aren't being added and instead there is just dropoff throughout the night. Thus it isn't completely accurate, just look for instance at Outlaw Star's increase over Tenchi Muyo! However, considering this is the overnight hours, there is a good chance it is accurate more often than not (plus it just gives me another way to generate numbers).
Anyway, this is more than a fantastic hold for Outlaw Star. It was the only show of the event to gain in viewers! The total viewers (786,000) also once again still beats most everything else on ASA in March (except for those episodes mentioned in the Gundam Wing paragraph).
Big O
Big O retained 98% of Outlaw Star's viewers. Basically, most everyone who made it to Gundam Wing stuck around through the next couple hours, despite the time being past 3 AM on the east coast. And the total viewers (769,000) still beat most everything else on Adult Swim in March outside of Bleach and those 2 Fullmetal episodes.
Yu Yu Hakusho
Yu Yu Hakusho's drop is a little bigger, but it still holds onto 92% of Big O's viewers at this late hour (and 70% of Bleach's viewers). This time slot is usually only holding on to an average of 47% of Bleach's viewers by this point. Yu Yu Hakusho's total viewers of 706,000 are significantly higher than that time slot through most of March. The one exception is March 10th when ratings were abnormally high (compared to the other weeks in March) throughout the night.
Blue Sub No. 6
Despite a lot less name recognition and probably only being well remembered by the more diehard Toonami fans, Blue Sub No. 6 still retained 84% of Yu Yu Hakusho's viewers (and 59% of Bleach's viewers).
Trigun
Trigun kept more viewers around with a retention of 94% of Blue Sub No. 6's viewers (and a retention of 56% of viewers since Bleach.
Astro Boy
Despite heading into black and white territory, Astro Boy still retained 89% of Trigun's viewers (and 50% of Bleach's viewers). Usually by this point in the night the audience is only 39% of what it was during Bleach.
Gigantor
Gigantor held onto 82% of Astro Boy's viewers, the second biggest percentage drop of the night. However, Gigantor's 414,000 viewers (ignoring the overperforming March 10th lineup) still beat about half of the Adult Swim Action lineup in March. That's a lot of Toonami fans sticking around to 6 AM!
I'd say the biggest numbers here are DBZ's retention of nearly all of Bleach's audience, and the hours of Gundam Wing through Big O (or we could even say through Yu Yu Hakusho) where there was not only a high number of viewers, but very low audience erosion from show to show. The biggest drop in viewers was actually Gundam Wing, but the total viewers were still high, and perhaps the initial curiosity factor had worn off for some viewers by then.
One other note from looking at Paradox's chart. While Adult Swim Action's ratings may be low compared to other nights of the week, considering how much lower Family Guy's ratings on Saturday also are compared to the rest of the week, a lot of it seems to be the day itself and not Adult Swim Action. In fact, taking the time slot into account, Adult Swim Action does reasonably well, and did much more so on April 1st. Overall, I'd say Saturday works pretty well. If ASA was moved to another night instead of Saturday, it would just face more competition (That's not to say I wouldn't mind seeing an actual expansion of ASA though).
With the right mix of shows and attention, Toonami on Saturday nights would be a good chance to build something in a time slot that probably wouldn't have many viewers otherwise.

Considering it was able to gain viewers back it seems to me like Outlaw Star should be the #1 pick for a returning Toonami favorite at least if they cannot or will not go for Dragon Ball Z which as usual proved it's still the king. The Big O did not lose many viewers from Outlaw Star either so the two of them could make a good pairing.

You are absolutely right; I missed the flip on Paradox's chart. I have updated my post, and the associated math accordingly.
I would actually put Outlaw Star over DBZ. While DBZ's ratings were big, a lot of that may just be people getting word of what was happening and tuning in to see what was going on. While people being interested enough to check out DBZ is certainly big, I would call Outlaw Star actually adding viewers at 2 AM even bigger. Plus I think it would be a better fit for the block, especially if they could get it largely uncut.
Besides Big O, I was quite impressed with Tenchi Muyo!'s hold of viewers as well.

Given a choice between MNET and Adult Swim for Outlaw Star I am pretty sure Bandai will move heaven and earth to get out of their MNET agreement and put Outlaw Star back on the air aon Adult Swim. Hell, if Williams Street needs a new master for an uncut airing I'll send them my DVDs if that's what it takes. But yeah, Outlaw Star's ratings pretty much indicate that it should be strongly considered to return on an Adult Swim Toonami. That show is still somehow relevant to this day even though it lacks Cowboy Bebop's and even Trigun's recognition.
I wish Blue Sub and Trigun had done better but it was really damn late by that point, I couldn't stay up to watch them live myself.
I think Adult Swim should do a clean sweep of the non-Bleach slate, other than Big O which should run Season 1 at long last. They can rotate the other shows back in eventually. But FLCL, GITS, Bebop, and Inuyasha need a long break off the air. The block's stagnated, move in some fresh content especially if it can be had for cheap.

5:30 am InuYasha isn't hurting anything. It would be somewhat cruel to just end it. So it should be able to stay.
The biggest hinderence is the initial budget. That's the reason some shows will stick around even if there is a dramatic shake-up.

I have to say that I'm pretty impressed by those ratings numbers, especially for shows airing after Bleach which is where the ratings tend to dip on Saturday nights. It's nice to see that people are willing to tune into anime, I just with the anime didn't have to be branded as "Toonami" for people to do so, it makes it seem as if anime can't stand on it's own two feet without having a branding that people can't seem to let go of. Any which way, it's just good to see Adult Swim's anime have a strong and successful night, with a little advertising and with the Toonami moniker maybe anime has a strong chance as building an empire once again on television in the United States....

I don't particularly like the possibility that if this happened it would be thanks to a programming block's packaging and not the content of the programming itself, but if it means profits for licensing company's and new fans entering into the fray than I'm all for it.
It certainly will lend credence to the theory that blocks and their packaging can have an affect on people's viewing habits if done correctly.

Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
