C&C - Toonami Talkback [4/1]

So I've been thinking about a realistic approach to the return of Toonami. I foresee we'll probably get firm details on when Toonami relaunches at [as]'s upfront in May. I get the feeling it will start in the Fall (Septemberish) for Sweeps Week.

9-11pm on [as] are probably going to be booked with ASC reruns.

9.0 King of the Hill
9.5 The Cleaveland Show
10.0 The Boondocks
10.5 Family Guy

Toonami could reasonable start at 11pm. It should probably target two demographics. New shows to keep the 14-18 demo interested and classics to keep 18-34s interested. In terms of new shows, we know FUNi has a licensing deal wherein if you buy two new shows, you get two classic ones for free. Let's assume that Bandai has a similar deal when making this schedule up.

11.0 Soul Eater [New from FUNimation]
11.5 Gurren Lagann [New from Bandai]
12.0 Inuyasha: The Final Act [New]
12.5 Bleach [New]

I can see Soul Eater is the flagship shonen. It's pretty popular already, only has 52 episodes, and can easily appeal across the 14-18 demo and the 18-34 demo. From there, Gurren Lagann is plain awesome and would probably have a lot of cross appeal between new inductees to anime that watch Soul Eater and old-school adults that are going to watch Inuyasha. Moving into Inuyasha, since CN will be getting a lot of nostalgic viewers, bill it as Toonami carrying the finale/new episodes of the classic Inuyasha. Using Toonami as the hook, they can easily get those who would be interested in seeing new Inuyasha to watch Toonami. Finally, Bleach is Bleach.

After the new stuff, the 18-34s are going to want to see classics at a reasonable hour. Since Outlaw Star was by far the most successful on AFD (if Twitter trends are anything to go by), Outlaw Star should lead off the repeat block. From there, they can promote Gundam 00 as "new Gundam" akin to Inuyasha: TFA. Sengoku Basara seems like a good show from FUNi to fulfill the second premiere obligation. Finally, everyone loves Trigun. What isn't present is Dragonball Z, because Nicktoons has DBKai and after a few weeks, I don't think a lot of people would seriously be interested in it. Considering the immense cost to buy the 290-episode behemoth, cost-benefit analysis says [as] shouldn't go for it. If the rights ever lapse to Kai, it might be wise for [as] to pick that up, though.

3.0 Yu Yu Hakusho [Classic Run from FUNi]

Finally, close out the night with some Yu Yu, reruns of Big O, the return of Samurai Jack, and classic Hanna-Barbera in the form of Cartoon Roulette. End it with Astro Boy and Gigantor from TRSi and you've got Toonami.

The beauty of these licensing deals with Bandai and FUNimation is that once they're done with a show, they can buy two and get four, effectively paying for good ratings for an hour and getting good ratings for two hours. With success in the 14-18 crowd with the first hour of Toonami, I can easily see it expanding from 9-11pm.

TCW is already licensed to CN and was on [as] at one point in time. It would make a pretty good bridge between CN and [as] and would put Star Wars back where it belongs, on Toonami. I can easily see SBT having new life breathed into it with the Toonami packaging and an optimal time slot. From there, BTAS is well regarded and would be cheap to reacquire (and would draw in nostalgics and new viewers alike). Finally, Toonami could easily pull off the Venture Brothers (they aired Bo^7 after all).

With all this being successful, I can easily see the Toonami schedule a year from it's reboot.

I dunno man, I just don't like the idea of current CN programming on [as]'s Toonami.Honestly, The Clone Wars is fine on CN's Saturday morning block in my opinion. As for Sym-Bionic Titan? Eh, I dunno. I don't know or think Genedy would be willing to want to pick it up, he's obviously doing other things.
I DO see a possible Samurai Jack run, didn't [as] originally think about the idea then it ended up running on Boomerang? Ah well. In terms of that 4-6AM spot? Besides Astro Boy and Gigantor? I'd definitely like to see Roulette in there though, you could throw a few classics in there: Voltron, Robotech, and the original Thundercats for the old-school 80's crowd.
You can just hear TOM1 saying "You're in the heart of some serious old-school action."

In terms of realistic NEW programming? I've got 3 shows, possibly 4.

From VIZ? Tiger & Bunny and InuYasha: The Final Act.
Tiger & Bunny, from both a fan and critical standpoint has long been said would be perfect for [as] and has the possibility of BEING a huge hit, and it's currently in the process of being dubbed so we can only hope.
InuYasha is, well...been a long time coming, and I'd at least like to see it air.

From FUNi? Including that possible fourth? Fairy Tail and MAYBE Soul Eater.
Why maybe for Fairy Tail? It has been readily available for DVD and Blu-ray for quite a while and it's popularity is kinda wadding at the moment so who knows. Fairy Tail, sure; it's been out on DVD/BD for a few months now but it's popularity is only BUILDING even more now. It's EASILY one of FUNi's most popular current shows outside of...FMA Brotherhood, and it definitely adds a new bump in Shonen flavor to the block.

Edit: At Raidon, I don't see [as] going after shows that's been on other channels, ala Gurren Lagann. I just don't.

Biggest thing its missing is that i think you need to get some seinen types... something along the lines of Black Lagoon, Elfien lied, Hellsing, or monster. Atleast one, maybe two shows like that. Shonen gives us action but more on slightly more if not very more light hearted side, and i think the block could use some hardcore kind of action and that's what seinen's can provide. That would help complete the block's variety for its target audience.

Also some specific nit picks...
-Not sure about young justice given its place on DC Nation
-Star wars the clone wars also not sure, but it could work since they have A LOT of episodes and it would be airing earlier.
-Also DBZ Kai's rights are with Nick and don't think CN will get the rights anytime soon; and i'm still not keen on the idea all things considered.
-As for Evangelion... i think it would be more interesting if they somehow work in the rebuild evangelion movies; they summarize the series with new content, and i think it would be more interesting than re-airing the old one... though that would require some creative cutting to break them up into episodes
-Also, though i love one piece, i'm not so sure given its 500+ and growing episode run; plus as the series goes on its pacing gets unbearable.

But like i said, its a fairly strong approach you got going on there. Work in some seinen and your right on track

I will say that I don't see them throwing out as much of the current [as] anime programming as many of you seem to reflect in these potential schedules. It would honestly make sense to say at least keep Cowboy Bebop and say, GitS reruns in that 5 AM hour if nowhere else if they still have the rights to them for a while. I personally don't care that much about 60's Astroboy or Gigantor. On a related note I wouldn't mind trying to see more of the 2000's Astroboy series that they never aired all of but given the ratings it had I doubt we'll see it, that and it's not really all that mature of a show, which I feel like "new" additions should at least TRY to skew a bit of an older audience.

That being said I wouldn't hate if GitS left the block, it's been on there for a while. Kekkaishi would have been prime Toonami material when it was new but it's been rerun a couple times now I believe. I like Durarara! but it also probably shouldn't stick around forever. Maybe they should try Baccano or something. I do feel like Adult Swim just wouldn't be Adult Swim without Cowboy Bebop airing somewhere at this point. It's been their since the block was created back in 2001 or whatever and I'm pretty sure that it's rarely if ever been off the line-up.

I love all of your schedules guys, it reminds me of the old Toonami days!

However, 9-11pm is pretty much locked into place for ratings purposes. King of the Hill has to air least once everyday, which is a real drag. Family Guy is also a ratings powerhouse, so can't throw that out as well. Who knows about this repeat comedy block though, if it will stay (the re-airings of the live action have been tossed around like a salad lately).

So with that said I think Toonami is realistically going to be restricted to 11-6 or 12-6 for the time being. Here's a little something I meticulously threw together (that's kind of an oxy-moron isn't it).

I would not expect big schedule changes this year. I would be surprised to see them add 3 fresh additions new or old on top of Bleach. At most 4 including the first season of The Big O and not all at the same time.

The no brainer is InuYasha The Final Act but it is entirely possible that they are not interested in airing it so long after the fact. If Viz only adds one show this year, I want Tiger & Bunny. Getting that 2 years after Japan is asking for lower potential ratings. But it is not impractical to get 2 Viz shows on top of Bleach. They do have some of the most mainstream stuff.

But I'd also like Toonami to get something darker. Could it be time to bring in Darker than Black or push for Baccano? Madoka kind of fits what I'd like to see but other new series I see potential for are perhaps Deadman Wonderland and Steins Gate. Gundam Unicorn would be awesome and I think Gundam 00 would still do well.

For oldies talk to Bandai. Outlaw Star and Big O season 1 should be top priority. Blue Sub and older Gundams, particularly the shorter grimmer OVA series would be great and maybe Zeta at some point. FUNi could bring some long shounen, Tenchi, Trigun and Champloo but for short series that are known for airing on Toonami you've gotta go for the Bandai backlog. Tenchi OVA 3 would be neat but I'd rather they wait to get the first two OVA back on TV before airing the 3rd.

There is potential to make an awesome block with those 6 hours. It remains to be seen if they will but they wont spend a ton of money on shows and we should not expect greatness from day 1.

In addition to those shows, they could air the Hellsing Ultimate OVA's, and premiere the remaining 6 once they get dubbed. And if Steins;Gate does will, then they could pick up it's predecessor, Chaos;Head as well. And if it ever gets dubbed, then Fate/Zero absolutely needs to go on Toonami.

And now that it's confirmed the games cast will be reprising their roles, then I say that Persona 4: The Animation would make a good fit.

Hi Sketch! I know you're a big One Piece fan as I am and know that One Piece Uncut could easily be Adult Swim's new Bleach. [AS] could put extreme emphasis on the show being Uncut like Funimation did for the DVD's. You wouldn't believe how many casual anime fans still think that OP is licensed by 4kids.

And One Piece really deserves a TV deal ASAP to ensure that they will continue dubbing past Water Seven. I mean, I really can't ever think of any long-running anime dubs with epsiodes counts topping 200 being DVD only. It really infuriates me when a OP dub fan says, oh we don't need OP on tv, I'll just buy the DVDs and hope everybody else will follow suit. Too bad it doesn't work that way.

I really don't want another D.Grayman, SGT Frog or Shin Chan deals on our hands where dubbing is stopped indefinitely.

A lot of older members remember a forum goer by the name of "RomanMack", the guy was deeply adamant about "If One Piece doesn't have a TV deal in America, it's gonna fail!", it was kinda funny, guy seemed suicidal about it. >_>
Obviously this isn't true if FUNi has decided to license more episodes and the fact is the current "Collection" sets seem to be doing really well for them. AND? One Piece is usually always in the top 30 of "Most Popular" shows on Hulu. So don't worry, people are watching.

As for a TV deal? Why it would be great, sure. But as I've said before, especially for One Piece, there's WAY too many episodes for them to air, EVEN 2 episodes every Saturday night from the beginning.

It's a shame that Aniplex isn't adamant about releasing Madoka Magica for broadcast. That would be perfect for a Saturday night block. Yeah I know it isn't typical Toonami fare, but it has an amazing feeling of suspense to it that would fit right in. Oh well, anything can still happen I suppose.

Bandai Entertainment is dead and half-burried. Don't expect a new Gundam show any time soon unless Funi elects to rescue the license.

The situation of the American side of Bandai definitely puts a snag in anything new Gundam-wise. Although, considering all of the other stuff Funimation has picked up in the wake of the collapse of various other companies, I can't say I'd be surprised to see them at least try to give Gundam a go. The biggest sticking point in that scenario would probably be however Bandai Japan decides to deal with Funimation, especially considering all of the problems they caused for the American side of Bandai.

Say someone is able to license and dub Gundam Age, how does it stack up to the other series so far? I loved Gundam 00, but I assume Age is quite a bit different.

Its basically a ripoff of Nadesico except with Gundams instead of Go-Nagai style super robots. The opening Flit arc suffers from a split personality of cloying cuteness meshed with the usual Gundam sadistic overkill, giving the feeling that it can't tell if it wants to be 00 or SD Gundam Force. Flit Asuno is arguably the worst protagonist since Kira (and by that I mean the GSD emotional response machine version of Kira, not the original) but happily we only have to put up with him for 13 episodes. Asemu is WAAAAAAAAAAAY better.

Overall AGE ain't 00 but it sure as hell isn't Destiny (and the peasants rejoiced...).

@Soul HAHAHA! I remember Romangod all right. I've actually been here since 2003, but I lost my password and made a new account.

I'd agree with you that it would take a long time for One Piece to catch up with just two epsiodes a week in [as], but it would be its best bet. Ideally a TV-PG/Y7 edit of One Piece (like on CN) on Nicktoons would be the best option but then you've got all of these people who would say "OMG MY ONE PIECE IS BEING HACKED AGAIN!" just like they did with DBZ Kai. I know it sounds ridiculous but trust me, I've seen it on multiple sites from youtube to even APForums. If it was on [as] it could truly be 100% uncut the way everybody wants it to be and it would get the show some good PR (which the dub desperately needs at this point).

And besides, Bleach has been chugging away at 1-2 episodes a week for over five years now and it still gets above-average ratings. Plus, we are eventually going to need a replacement for Bleach since the dub has only about 100 episodes left.

If they air One Piece now, I could see a new TV run just starting at Season Four. It'd promote the upcoming DVD sets, and Davy Back Fight isn't a horrible place to start off (granted, it doesn't give you a good idea of the plot, but it at least eases you in to the characters and their quirks before hitting you with Aokiji).

A few minutes ago we had a second bump showing several #BringBackToonami tweets. Adult Swim ends it saying "we're looking into it".

Gave it some thought, and here's what i'm thinking the new toonami schedule might look like.
The most signficant change i made was using some of the time for reapeats. Adult Swim seems to like it and its not a bad idea; given that the shows only air once a week it would be wise to give people a second chance to see an episode if they miss it of it they just plain want to see it again. The repeats would only be used for the newer series that are airing. This however would limit how many shows we can put on the block since it nearly cuts the block in half... but i find it to be realistic


I tried to break down the potential series into groups...

Epic Shonen - These are shonen anime series that run over 50 episodes... kinda important to put them seperately due to the fact that they would need to be on the air much longer than other series
Bleach, Soul eater, YuYu hakusho, Naruto, Gundam, Etc

Shonen - Normal length (26 or less episodes) shonen that appeal to teens
Gurren Lagann, Sengoku Basara, Black Butler, evangelion, etc

Classic Toonami - Shows from the old school days of toonami back in the early 2000s
Outlaw star, Tenchi, Gundam wing, etc

Adult - Anime series that appeal to an older audience in either its themes or content (not necessarily only seinen)
Black Lagoon, Bacanno, Ghost in the shell, death note, Hellsing, Etc

Retro - Series dating back to the 80's or earlier
Astro boy, Lupin III, Gigantor, etc

Start with the epic shonen and Shonen as that's when the younger portion of the audience will still be watching; follow up with the Classic Toonami for the adults digging on nostalgia and for teens still awake that might also enjoy those shows; then hit with the more adult shows late at night; After that, all the fresher stuff repeats, and then close the night off with a retro series

The basic set up would look like this, but obviously adult swim would keep itself open to playing around with it, if they ever wanted; like whether or not they need the repeat slots for their given line up. And I too, took into account that idea that most likely adult swim would want to keep 9-11 all to themselves.

Taking into account that Adult swim might want to keep around some of the series it has currently running and want to limit how many new shows they add; i might think that the schedule might look something like this:

11.0 Bleach [New Episodes]
11.5 Gurren Lagann [new series]
12.0 FMA:Brotherhood
12.5 Sengoku Basara [new series]
1.0 Tenchi Muyo
1.5 Outlaw Star
2.0 Black Lagoon [new series]
2.5 Cowboy Bebop or Ghost in the Shell
3.0 Bleach
3.5 Gurren Lagann
4.0 FMA:Brotherhood
4.5 Sengoku Basara
5.0 Black lagoon
5.5 Lupin III


It might be too soon to take off durarara, but that depends on when this change would take place... if we are talking 2013, then i could see durarara being dropped since by then it will have gone through two repeats... If this change however happens before adult swim feels they had aired Durarara enough times, then it would probably take the 12.5 and 4.5 slot from Sengoku, so that it can follow FMA Brotherhood...
