"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

I think that if we get a new show acquisition in August that it's going to be Panty and Stocking With Garterbelt as Funimation and Adult Swim has expressed interest in it. InuYasha: The Final Act might be possible, but I'm not betting on it.

This would be an ideal schedule:
12 AM: Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt
12:30 AM: Bleach
1 AM: Casshern Sins
1:30 AM: Deadman Wonderland
2 AM: Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
2:30 AM: FLCL/Big O Season

Well, they're not going to move Bleach. I'm pretty confident in that. I also don't think they'll move much around at all. Though these 6 could definitely be our shows.

Could be worse but I don't see them moving Bleach from Midnight nor do I see them taking Bebop off the schedule.

I think I'm done with the block for a while, but not due to my own choice. My power went out on the 29th and it's still out, so I missed two weeks worth of episodes. I don't want to jump back in this weekend - provided I even have power by then - as I wouldn't know what happened. I liked both Deadman Wonderland and Casshern Sins, but I can't say I feel compelled to watch them online - legally of course - as my limited bandwidth would give me problems. Maybe I'll start watching the block again when those shows repeat, or when they add something new to it.

Dang the power went out, that sucks.

It's all but assured Deadman will repeat eventually. Not so sure about Casshern.

As for the schedule discussion that was going on earlier...

Cowboy Bebop will probably get 1 more run so it can have a complete one on Toonami. They might bring back InuYasha or Big O season 2 to replace it after this run and I'd welcome Durarara (it would probably be bad for Toonami's ratings though) but if they don't have 4 premieres then they can easily keep Cowboy Bebop at 2:30 with FMA: Brotherhood at 2AM.

If by chance they do have 4 premieres then Deadman and FMA:B would probably end up getting the last hour unless Deadman can't air at 5AM due to being entirely TV-MA so far. It sure can't air at 5:30AM but maybe 5AM would be allowed.

It would be fantastic if they had 4 premieres. They might be able to get the entire premiere block over a million with Bleach returning to canon. However 4 premieres is quite a bit and lets face it 1:30AM premieres are not something they should be doing when they could simply wait until an earlier slot freed up to air that show and spend less money at a time. The only shows I'd consider "okay" to air that late would be a premiere that has not done well or a returning Toonami classic they got for a reasonable price. If they have Bleach, Casshern, a new anime and a classic then they should probably run the new anime and Bleach in the first hour and the classic and Casshern in the second. Casshern should take 1:30AM if it's continuing to struggle but if it turns things around then it should probably still get the benefit of the earlier slot unless they actually paid less for Casshern than they did for the returning classic.

I wonder what it would take for AS to try Toonami in prime time. The competition is tougher there but it seems all but assured that even reruns of Bleach or InuYasha would be able to do as well or better than KotH and Home Movies have been doing 9PM-10:30PM. They probably shouldn't run any premieres before 11PM though.

4 premieres would be awesome, but it's rare for two new shows to debut on the same date, so at best I think we can only expect three. I'm not sure whether Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt will air on Toonami, but hopefully the next acquisition is a show that simultaneously throws a bone to the fans and is interesting to the more general [adult swim] audience, and in that regard I think Inuyasha: The Final Act or Tiger & Bunny could work really well.

[adult swim] is going to have to go out of their comfort zone and experiment for at least one week in order to test whether a full Saturday night Toonami could work. My personal hope is that they have a Deadman Wonderland marathon of the entire series when it ends, which could do wonders to promote interest in Toonami and promote new shows. Either that, or some sort of Bleach or Inuyasha movie marathon. But at this point I don't think they have enough shows for a full Saturday night Toonami. The brand is clearly being used by [adult swim] to promote the anime programing and that alone, and it's not like [adult swim] has non-comedy action shows they can put on it. Maybe Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but they are not showing it for probably a good reason. They'd have to borrow some programming from Cartoon Network's library, and that might be more complicated than it sounds.

Well, I guess it could work somehow. Probably could look something like this (assuming they get at least one new show):

9.0 Cowboy Bebop
9.5 Big 0 (season 2)
10.0 Inuyasha
10.5 Inuyasha
11.0 New Anime
11.5 Casshern Sins (new)
12.0 Bleach (new)
12.5 Deadman Wonderland
1.0 Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
1.5-6am Repeat

11pm is more likely, but it'd work best if they get two new shows . In addition, Bleach clearly isn't all that useful in garnering interest in newer acquisitions, so they'll need to get a different but still popular and familliar title, hence the value of getting Inuyasha: The Final Act, or even Naruto Shippuden (although the latter is impossible at the moment). If they can manage to get two acquisitions, one of them being a familiar/popular title like Inuyasha: The Final Act, maybe we could see this schedule:

11.0 Inuyasha: The Final Act (new)
11.5 Tiger & Bunny (new)
12.0 Bleach (new)
12.5 Casshern Sins (new)
1.0 Deadman Wonderland
1.5 Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
2.0 Cowboy Bebop
2.5-6am Repeat

Honestly I don't think they'll try expanding Toonami for a while. That's probably for the best, because this three hour system actually can do a good job of keeping things fresh if they use it to their advantage. Hopefully the ratings will pick up a bit, though.

I'm sorry to hear that your power is still out. That must be pretty hard for you and the rest of your family. I hope that it will come back on soon.

As for the shows, I can understand why you wouldn't want to jump back into them after missing two weeks worth of episodes, as well as why watching them online would be problematic. Deadman Wonderland will probably go on repeat after they finish the series, but I don't how likely that is for Casshern Sins due to its length and ratings. Though, you could see if you can buy or rent Casshern Sins on DVD if you want to see the series earlier. I don't think that Deadman Wonderland has been released on DVD yet.

Even though I like Deadman Wonderland and I could see them repeating the series after the last episode airs, I think it would be better if they got a new series instead, especially when the only new episodes would be from Bleach and Casshern Sins. I guess it would depend on what they plan to air after FLCL is done. I could also see them kept Cowboy Bebop on so that it can have a full run on Toonami.

I seriously hope that Casshern Sins gets at least one rerun. Maybe ratings will pick up once Deadman Wonderland finishes it's run and they might find it worthy of a rerun? IDK if it'll happen, but I think every series deserve one.

As for expansion, we're going to be waiting on this one for awhile. I don't see us getting more than three premieres for about a year or so (from Toonami's re-birth of course) and after that time has passed, we don't know if Adult Swim is going to have more of a budget by then.

It's going to be very difficult to match, let alone beat the original run in it's prime. Toonami right now is a great block with lots of promise, but the prime has quality that no other block has matched. Given how hard it is to reach that should explain why there's a loud minority whining about how Toonami is still ASA (lol, what?).

Also, to Light Lucario, just want to say that thanks for bothering to watch Toonami despite not supposedly being a big fan. The help is really appreciated. :)

I don't know if this has been brought up before, but would Puella Magi Madoka Magica work on Toonami? I don't see why not. I'm not sure how hard it would be to license, but the content shouldn't be a problem. If they can air Deadman Wonderland on Toonami, they can air Madoka.

Then again, Madoka's already so popular that it probably doesn't need a run on Toonami. It's still be a decent addition.

Shows that need to air on Toonami:
Inuyasha: Final Act
One Piece
Outlaw Star
Big O (season 2)
New Sailor Moon Series
Lupin the III: Fujiko Mine
DBZ
Tiger & Bunny

Big O season 2 will be airing on Toonami. It's just a matter of time. Since Adult Swim co-produced it, the rights to season 2 will never expire.

I still think it would be really lame if they did that without getting back season 1 and airing that first.

I think the week after Deadman ends, they should go back to 12am-4am w/ 4am-6am repeats.

This is the prediction I keep posting on twitter for the rest of the year: http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=84tBS4kS

Do it for November 3rd. Ten whole hours of Toonami awesomeness. Mmmm,

Yeah, it would be, especially since there might be new viewers that might not get the show if they start from season 2. Though, I still think it's unlikely that Adult Swim will reacquire the rights to season 1.

I think Adult Swim may air the OVA for Deadman Wonderland before they repeat the series. And I don't think they'll go back to 12 AM - 4 AM, and 4 AM - 6 AM repeats, since the current schedule is doing quite well.

What I can see them doing is air different shows at 2 AM hour and the 5 AM hour. Since the 2 AM hour shows are already repeats themselves, I don't think they need the 5 AM hour. Right now, the current shows that they have that aren't airing are Big O (season 2), Durarara!!, and InuYasha (maybe). It's possible that they lost InuYasha. But if they didn't, I think they should air Big O season 2 and InuYasha in the 2 AM hour and put Ghost in the Shell and Cowboy Bebop in the 5 AM hour since they already ran in the 2 AM hour. I don't think Adult Swim is planning to air Durarara!! again, since it would be bad for ratings. I assume they're just going to keep streaming the show online until the rights expire in June 2013(?).

I don't see them airing Bleach back to back either. I don't think having one show take up an hour of a three hour block is a good idea... Also, I think Deadman Wonderland repeats will most likely be before Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. If they have a new show, I think they should put Deadman Wonderland at 1:30 AM after FLCL finishes, pushing Fullmetal Alchemist back to 2 AM. But it's possible that they might not have a new show and they might want to repeat FLCL again before they take it off. Then, Deadman Wonderland and Casshern Sins should just switch. As for Cowboy Bebop, it could repeat again, but I would prefer if they air Big O or something instead. It needs a break. I don't think it's ever left the schedule since it joined Adult Swim Action...

Aniplex USA just posted this on their Twitter.

Apparently, Blue Exorcist will be premiering on Neon Alley in September. If by some miracle the series does make it onto Toonami, it's gonna have to be quite some time after that.

I don't think it'll be coming on Toonami at all. It just seems like Aniplex USA chose Neon Alley over Adult Swim. The contract with Viz will probably be about 2 years. I doubt Toonami would want it then.

Also, I'm assuming that InuYasha (the original series) not being mentioned on Neon Alley's website means that Adult Swim still has the rights to the show. Like they did with Naruto, I think they would've listed InuYasha under the favorites lists if they were going to stream it.

I'm pretty sure it was gone for a year. 2008-2009 maybe? Well, at least other than that, it has been on AS since it joined as their first anime in 2001.

They SAID that stuff airing on Neon Alley would not effect it's eligibility to air on television. SO unless they flat out lied.. Also, I believe streaming rights and broadcast rights have ALWAYS been 2 separate things. And who knows Neon Alley may qualify as a different thing altogether.

New episodes for Deadman Wonderland would probably help Casshern Sins get more ratings than the reruns would. I wouldn't mind if they do get through the series again, but I'm not sure how likely that is due to the ratings and its length.

That's really nice of you to say. I enjoy watching the new shows for Toonami, even though Casshern Sins can get a bit too boring at times, and I do want to support what they're trying to do with this new Toonami, especially when they are putting quite a nice bit of effort into it.

That would be pretty cool. I would like to see Madoka, especially when I can't afford the DVDs right now, and it would fit with the block pretty well. Plus, since it's already pretty popular, it could turn in some good ratings for the block.

In my opinion, it will have an effect. Even though some series might make it to TV, some of them won't because of Neon Alley. If every show that's exclusive to Neon Alley airs on TV, it won't be exclusive anymore and people wouldn't really get Neon Alley since they can just watch it on TV.

And I thought Neon Alley was a channel with a schedule and everything... just on a different platform. Wouldn't it count as broadcasting more than streaming?

I don't really see how Neon Alley would have that much of an effect, especially when not everyone will have have access to it and it doesn't give the same kind of exposure as a TV airing does. Besides that, Casshern Sins is out on DVD and I think I've heard about it airing on the Funimation Channel as well, but they were still able to get it. Personally, if they don't get the series that are available through Neon Alley, I think that it would have more to due with the small budget they've been given and unable to afford the shows at the moment more so than trying to make these shows exclusive only to Neon Alley.

Today marks the 15th Year Anniversary of ThunderCats (2011). While I find it unfortunate that the show was canceled before it had a chance to finish its story, I am glad that the show's art director was willing to give fans closure via a podcast interview.
Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
