"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

So apparently there were a lot of Fractale DVD commercials last night. Could that be Toonami's next pick-up, or is FUNi just using ad-space on Toonami to promote their stuff (in which case, I'm surprised they're not advertising Panty and Stocking if they want it to be big and the TV deal fell through).

I really liked the video game review from this past week's Toonami broadcast, I really love some of these cool pre-show promo's they air too because it really pumps me up for the episode that follows. All in all I believe Adult Swim's done a great job with bringing that true Toonami atmosphere to the table and I highly commend them for that, having a blast is what it's all about. :)

I did not see these.

I saw them, they aired during practically every after-show commercial break. I think it's more a matter of FUNi buying Toonami ad space than a portent of the future though.

Yeah, I also think that getting people to buy the DVDs would decrease eventual ratings.

Not if they only put shows on the air before they come out on DVD.

Fractle already has a release date though, and it's before it could finish a potential Toonami run even if it were to air immediately after DW so most likely it's not airing. If we do get another new show from Funimation I'd expect it to be something with a release date far enough into the future to not affect the Toonami run. Maybe Future Diary, or sadly Guilty Crown.

Steins; Gate remains an option as well. If AS wants a more Bleach-y show there's also A Certain Magical Index, or Shakugan no Shana (the 2nd and 3rd seasons could premiere before DVD releases but the first series which doesn't have that luxury would need to do okay in the ratings first).

FUNi does have a decent catalog waiting to be pilfered. Right now that's something no other licensor can offer, with Sentai being more niche, Viz concentrating on doing its own thing, and Aniplex . . . being Aniplex.

I didn't see these commercials either. It sounds like FUNi bought the ad space only with certain cable/satellite/fiber providers.

Future Diary actually sounds like a really good fit. I didn't catch it while it was airing, and I wanted to grab the DVDs when they released.

A Certain Magical Index is probably too much of an otaku show to put on AS, but I would enjoy it if they kept doing things like DW and Casshern (A show that has been released and one that hasn't) if possible. But it would be a waste of many unseen anime to just air things that aren't yet on DVD.

On the note of Future Diary...it;s possible it may be the next show. Supposedly it;s getting a billingual release in Australia by early 2013 meaning the dub would be ready before then. Since Funimation usually doesn't get dubs out of the gate that quickly maybe it's possible they pitched it to AS and that sped up dub production.

Of course this is just a theory.

That's a possibility. If what you're saying is true then Future Diary has had a really fast turnaround which is rare for FUNimation who usually takes a year or two after the show ended before they even announce a release date. I think Future Diary has the potential to do better ratings-wise than previous suspense shows AS has run as well.

I just hope they don't botch Yuno. A character like her is really easy to screw up, and Yuno makes or breaks the series. But I think FUNi, out of all the licensors/dubbing studios, probably has the best chance to get Yuno right. I just hope it's not Monica Rial again. The woman has talent but I have just plain heard her too much lately. Though I'm not opposed to her being Minene. Rial could pull Minene off beautifully.

As for ACMI . . . yeah it is an otaku-y show but I think the Bleach-y elements are a potential selling point to both AS and the audience. I mean, the main character has a right fist of God. XD

Is FLCL still slated to air in August?

The on-air schedule recently updated, and while FLCL is still showing at 5AM, the 2AM airing was replaced with the first season of GitS:SAC.

(And yes, it's the red text, indicating a change.)

Weird. I wonder if they were trying to get a show, but failed to reach an agreement, and just decided to play Ghost in the Shell.

I would really rather FLCL than season one of GitS.. I mean, I will watch GitS but..

Obviously there's glitching going on. It'll probably be fixed soon.

I'm not going to trust that FLCL or GitS will air in the 2AM or 5AM slots with the schedule looking like that. Both are equally possible but it's also very possible they are using them as a placeholder.

And what's up with no FMAB in that one slot the week before?

They're breaking their 3 hours repeat deal if they run FLCL instead of GitS at 5AM and if they're going to do that then give InuYasha 5:30 back. Maybe even give it the whole 5 hour.

If they're intending to keep GitS on, well I can think of a handful of people who are not going to like that one bit and I don't think locking down another slot for a whole year is in their best interest either.

None the less GitS has held on to nearly all of FMAB's viewers during Toonami and it beat Casshern once so far. I'd say it's earned it's keep where as Cowboy Bebop arguably has not.

As a vanity play they could literally keep GitS and Bebop in the 5AM hour for however long they want but they need to free up 2AM-3AM sooner or later to make room for new series pushing FMAB and Deadman Wonderland later if necessary.

For non-Twitter users, Jason DeMarco has said this for this week.

ClarkNova1: Okay #toonami fans. Tomorrow night we will have ANOTHER new game review! Normally we mix it up more, this is just the way it worked out.

No complaints over here!

Weird. Adult Swim's on-air schedule was updated again today, but I don't see any changes other than Ghost in the Shell's red letters being changed into black and Bleach episode 255 being listed to repeat at 3:00 AM for the rest of the month. I wonder if FLCL is going to air at 5AM after all?

Today marks the 15th Year Anniversary of ThunderCats (2011). While I find it unfortunate that the show was canceled before it had a chance to finish its story, I am glad that the show's art director was willing to give fans closure via a podcast interview.
Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
