"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

Guh. Clearly, none of you are in the position of having only seen one episode (the first). If you were, this possibility would annoy you to death. No one has time to watch 200 episodes online just to catch up!

So you all tell me: if they start where they left off, is it fine if I miss that many shows, or will I be confused as heck?

One Piece isn't really a hard series to understand. . I feel that it is similar to the Dragonball franchise in that regard. You should pick up on the main details of the story pretty quickly as long as they don't start right in the middle of an arc. Heck, if they start One Piece at "season 4," then the 5 episode Ocean's Dream filler arc will pretty much explain most of the characters' backstory, their goals, and the gist of the story up to that point.

I'd still recommend watching the first episode just in case in order to get the basic details of the story.

The reason why I feel starting at 207-208ish is the best choice is because 207-230 wields plenty of episodes where you can get to know the cast and understand their personalities. 230+ starts a huge story arc that..actually moves the plot in a very driven way. In the long run, the Toonami crew are better off starting at early Foxy Pirates-->Water 7 than pushing it all back.

You know, perhaps the Davy Back Fight Arc isn't the best place to start the series. While I personally loved the anime adaption of the arc, it's not really important to the series in the long run and the arc itself is quite...silly. It might turn casual viewers off. Probably where I'd start the series, if they wanted to start in season 4, would be Ocean's Dream, which I've always found to be a very fun mini arc even if it is a filler one, and it provides a pretty good introduction to the characters and the series if someone who knew nothign about the series was watching it for the first time. If not Ocean's Dream, the only starting point left would be the Foxy Pirates two-parter after it, which can't be skipped as the end of the second part is essentially the beginning of the Water 7 arc in the anime.

Thinking about it, I have to wonder if episode one is the best place to start after all...

I think that you'll be fine. Despite its length, I don't think that one needs to watch every single episode of the series in order to understand exactly what's going on. It certainly doesn't hurt to watch through the first few seasons, but I don't think it will prevent you from enjoying the show if they jumped ahead a few hundred episodes. From what I've seen, the storyline doesn't seem that difficult to follow along. Prior to watching the Funimation dub premiere on Toonami years ago, I only knew the basic premise of One Piece, didn't really know much about the characters' backstories and at most, I only saw one full episode of the 4Kids dub, even though I'm not sure if it was just a few minutes before I changed the channel instead. Even so, I enjoyed the Skypiea episodes and they were pretty easy to follow along with.

Y'know bringing up DBZ does make for an interesting point... namely, how many of us actually watch Dragon Ball before we watched DragonBall Z? not many I'd assume and yet we got through DBZ just fine. However that's not a perfect comparison.

First, Most of watched DBZ when we were kids when we had lower standards; we were more willing to overlook unexplained details and just watch people fight... when your audience however is teens and young adults, they might be less willing to ignore unexplained details...

Second i'm not sure DBZ called back to Dragonball as often as One piece does... i mean in DBZ we never really learn of piccolo's history as a villain, but its not important since he pretty much drops his villainous plans in the first episode thus making his past as King Piccolo and Piccolo jr. to be rather irrelevant; same goes for alot of character histories. In DBZ, The Red Ribbon army does get referenced later on with Dr.Gero, but it doesn't feel that important since Dr Gero himself never appeared in DragonBall; all in all its a rather weak call back. Heck, in some cases we were actually better off not knowing some details as some things we inconsistent... like how Piccolo was originally repeatedly called a demon only for us to found out later he's really an alien, or questioning where the heck Launch disappeared too, or having to watch the half-assed relationship between Goku and Chichi. With One piece, their are some more call backs and Oda does a good job at keeping things consistent... I don't want to go too deep into details, but some characters like Crocodile, Buggy, and Coby pop up in later arcs; some characters like Arlong, the giants, and laboon are referenced later on

Thinking about it, maybe you could just skip ahead, but you'd have to pick carefully. Season 4 seems like a good point since the alabasta arc establishes a number of details. Luffy's relationship with Ace, information about the Shichibukai, Crocodile himself, the Void century, the ancient weapons, Smoker's obsession with hunting Luffy, etc; Not to mention right after albasta we meet Blackbeard. All of which is important later on and is a lot to skip.... Stuff before the grandline, i think maybe people won't be lost without it; for the few things that are referenced i think we get flashbacks that are enough to explain them to keep people following along... Alabasta is also one of the major high points for the series

Though MAYBE they could skip ahead to the davyback fights(season 7)... At the very least Water 7, will also discuss the ancient weapons, and the void century. Though i'm not sure how well they would respond to the rest. Like do they mention enough details about the shicibukai later on that new viewers will understand their role and how they differ from other pirates? And how will they respond to Ace? I think Ace does mention that he is Luffy's brother after water 7 thus keeping viewers in the loop on his significance to luffy. Some might be confused by a number of the characters from alabasta; but if toonami takes one weekend at some point to air the alabasta movie; that won't be an issue. I'm less certain there...

Though one thing i think toonami can and should do, is just skip a lot of the filler that isn't good where they can... the marine base filler is a decent filler so they can use some time for that, but some filler arcs are not very good, and as filler they are not important, so they are totally worth skipping. Though speaking of which one filler they WOULD benefit from is the lost memory arc, since it basically summarizes the main characters backstories that we would have skipped if we don't start from episode 1

The first episode of any Dragonball series I ever watched was the 62nd episode of Dragonball GT. :p

But, on topic, I understand your points. But really, I don't think skipping over some plot details of the earlier arcs would confuse viewers to the point of dropping the series. I think most people can pick up on what the series is about and the general basis of the characters in one or two episodes. It's not really a complicated series, long plot aside.

My first true exposure to One Piece came when Toonami premiered the FUNimation dub of season 3 at episode 144. I knew only the basic characteristics of the Straw Hat crew, and maybe one or two plot points from before that point. After Toonami abruptly cancelled it, I switched over to the online simulcast, which was over three hundred episodes further ahead. I had little to no issues keeping up overall. Eventually, I got all caught up through the manga and DVD releases of seasons 1 through 3. Now I'm seeing season 4 for the first time ever in anime form.

You're pretty much hitting the nail on the head here.

The thing about One Piece is it actually is a fair bit more continuity-based than Dragonball(Z). Dragonball is very much a pick-up-and-go series that gives you pretty much everything you need to know at the start of most story arcs, very much helped by the fact that the story and the characters, while charming, are very simple and straightforward. One Piece, on the other hand, is a lot more plot-heavy and you really do need to go back and read the story arcs that focus on each character to understand what drives them and to understand what's going on in the larger One Piece world.

My experience with One Piece is that I started reading it steadily around the Baratie Arc, and while I was very much enjoying the series, I knew I'd have to go back and read the earlier chapters to fully grasp what was going on. So, I'd say, whereas with DBZ you can pretty much put off watching/reading Dragonball indefinitely, with One Piece you'll always have it in your mind, "Yeah, I really to go back and read the earlier chapters sometime soon here."

Personally, if you're new to One Piece, I'd highly recommend starting from the beginning and working your way up. But whatever they decide for Toonami, I think it'd be fine to watch that too.

Personally, I'd like Toonami to restart from episode 1. 4Kids had cut out so much in their version (including whole episodes and ENTIRE ARCS--remember Apis? Laboon? Little Garden? Goat Island?) that I feel it's a crime for this content to never see the light of day on TV.

Laboon? You mean the iceberg right? ;)

Wow. That's what I missed out on? That's hilarious! :D

It's so hilarious nowadays looking back at clips of the OLD One Piece dub.

I know, right? It's like watching someone do a One Piece Abridged Series, which the 4Kids dub essentially was. It was most certainly abridged, and they sure did add humor...badly.

That reminds me why I never watched much of the 4Kids dub. The voices were so terrible, although David Moo's Sanji is almost in the so bad, it's hilarious kind of territory. The painful and obvious edits were another aspect I remember from what little I saw and at times, those were pretty funny too.

That accursed dub ruined david moo. I loved him as Xellos.

This video is all that really needs to be said about the 4kids dub.

I will say I don't think starting at Season 3 of One Piece would be the best idea. I have bad vibes about it, because that was the very Season that originally got One Piece pulled from Toonami to begin with. I could understand if they want to air it because it never finished on Toonami, but at the same time it would feel a bit uneasy.

On a side note, I've been reading the tumblr posts more often and....geez. No offense to anyone, but some of the questions can be one big headache of their own: Toonami

Goes to show that there are fans who have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to the block.

I didn't look favorably on Skypiea lately but honestly it's a good arc to give people a feel for both the adventure and the fighting in One Piece. On top of that while it's a little slow at points it has no filler that I recall until G8 which is one of the better anime-only stories. The main problem is you don't get hardly any background on the characters in Skypiea and that's one thing you do get with the lost memories story after the Davy Back arc. Probably either wouldn't be too off-putting for people to start on. No matter where they start they run the risk of putting off some viewers.

So either you assume the people tuning in wont turn to Hulu and DVDs to watch the show faster than once maybe twice a week from the beginning or you assume people are going to use those means to catch up if you start at 144 or 207 and hope they don't stop watching it on Toonami once they get caught up because they find the other method more convenient than Toonami.

Am I wrong in thinking that the majority of One Piece fans who wanted it on Toonami really just want it to get more exposure more so than care if they can watch the latest episodes of FUNimation's dub on TV? Almost as if keeping it on the air is just peace (or piece) of mind to them? I'm sure some fans would like Toonami to play the more recent episodes so they don't have to buy DVDs but I think we can all agree what's most important is getting new viewers for One Piece and keeping them. That isn't however what is most important to Toonami, as that is entirely ratings and simply being able to play a good show.

I question what is the best starting point for a casual observer to begin their One Piece journey on because IMO until Baratie it feels really childish (something FUNimation's swearing may have been trying to skew) and the art style becomes a bit more palpable over time as well. Then again I don't think it looks any more like a kid's show than early Naruto so maybe that's a moot point.

Also, random Prince of Tennis Toonami pop-up for the win!

Toonami

This response worries me, dismissing worries about an all-shonen block. No, people aren't demanding you air experimental non-action shows. We just want good adult-oriented action shows in the vein of Bebop and GITS. And don't say "they don't make shows like those anymore"; there's not enough of them, but they are some and at least some of them should show up on Toonami (Baccano, Black Lagoon, Tiger and Bunny, Michiko to Hatchin, etc.).
