"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

Very nice. lol @ the swear jar comment... must have been a megaduce-sized jar

Since it says watch to how to enter, wonder if it'll only be done during that night. I'm not one to stay up far into Saturday night as I record the block to watch later, so now I may be forced to do so in case its a limited entry form.

Word is Akira will be rated TV-MA LSV - no surprise there. It sounds as though there won't be very much editing done on this.

The only thing I can see being edited is the scene with Kaori and the clowns. Other than that, I think it's gonna be uncut.

That's about a half-second shot. They could just blur it. Also, the Pioneer dub uses the S-word quite a bit. Of course, in 2013 most adult cable channels have no problem with this, but for some reason Adult Swim does, so expect to hear several bleeps.

I thought that they were going to air the Funimation dub, but I don't know if they say that word frequently too. Adult Swim isn't an adult channel, but rather an adult block, and I think that the channels that can get away with saying that are ones that people have to pay extra to get anyway.

It's actually the Pioneer dub, Funi just rescued the license after Geneon folded. And there's plenty of stuff on cable that get away with language that aren't premiums. AMC, FX and Comedy Central all do it on a semi-regular basis. The rating being TV-MA LSV makes me think most of the language will go unbleeped and any cuts will be for time at best or if there's anything that BS&P is just too squirmy about.

Where did you guys get the "S" from? From the promo, I thought it was going to be TV-MA-LV...

Jason DeMarco said so. Check a few posts back for a link to his tweet.
Didn't see that there before. Thanks! :)

On another note, let's hope Aniplex does their homework this time around. They wouldn't want another Evangelion 2.22 on their hands. Although the thought of them failing twice would be hilarious.

New schedule beginning January 4, 2014:

11:30 PM - Space Dandy
12:00 AM - Bleach
12:30 AM - Naruto: Shippuden
1:00 AM - One Piece
1:30 AM - Soul Eater
2:00 AM - Sword Art Online
2:30 AM - FLCL
3:00 AM - Naruto (beginning with episode 1)
3:30 AM - Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
4:00 AM - Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
4:30 AM - IGPX
5:00 AM - Star Wars: The Clone Wars
5:30 AM - InuYasha

I'm surprised that they'll continue airing the original Naruto on the lineup. It seems kind of sudden to move Star Wars: The Clone Wars down to 5AM too.

Well, it makes plenty of sense, and we'll probably see Naruto beating what's above it for a while.Brotherhood will benifit greatly from this too, expect the latter half of the block to do seriously well from Naruto boosting it. I'm kinda surprised the moved Star Wars that far down, but they probably think that Naruto/FMAB is a better duo and that Star Wars would fit better with the shows down there. It seems like they don't want to cut down on anything since they took a InuYasha slot while removing IGPX or something would've made more sense ratings wise. InuYasha rocked that hour. But I like that they're doing that, pleases everyone. This all seems really great.

What I don't like however is that they're starting over with Naruto. They just took a year airing 52 episodes. It makes no sense to me starting over now. I'm sure there's a lot of people that would like to watch on from that point, and I don't think it makes any difference in how Shippuden does.

I wonder if they only had the rights to the first 52 episodes of Naruto.Clone Wars moving to 5am is interesting. Does anyone know what was the last show to air at 5am that wasn't Inuyasha or a repeat of earlier in the night?

Yes. Cowboy Bebop was airing in the 5am hour before they got InuYasha. At that point GitS was airing in the 4am hour, but then they moved Bebop to the 4am hour when InuYasha came pushing GitS off the schedule.

Personally, I would have preferred another new show on the lineup instead of keeping Naruto around, but that will probably boost the ratings for the later hours of the block too. I don't know why they'd start all the way back at episode one. If they were going to keep the show on the block, they might as well keep moving forward. That probably would drive even more ratings if they kept covering the first series. Maybe they only had the rights to the first fifty-two episodes, but it still seems like a strange choice. The cast for Space Dandy looks pretty good though.

Jason DeMarco explains why original Naruto will restart from episode 1:

#toonami fans, so I'm not doing this all day: we were allowed by partners to extend our ORIGINAL Naruto deal (52 eps) for a second run.

Continuing from where we left off would have been prohibitively expensive. Basically, it was get Shuppuden/re-run Naruto or continue...

…with new Naruto eps, but NO Shippuden. The choice was clear. That's the first and last time I'll deal with that here so please do not ask.

IN SHORT: You can't have it all, and neither can we. But I certainly think 3 solid hours of premieres is a good way to kick off the year.

Well it's a relief to know we probably won't be stuck with both Naruto's forever. I'm hoping when classic Naruto ends it's second run Shippuuden takes that slot and something new can air at 12AM but that's likely wishful thinking

Yeah okay, that makes a lot more sense then. If they had the chance for the first 52 episodes or ditch the original series completely, running them again at a later time seems like the best idea for sure. I think they'll do great.

Well, I'm a tad bit disappointed with that schedule change. They really should've kept Clone Wars at 3am, moving it down to 5am while dethroning it with old Naruto repeats seems more than a bit disheartening toward the only western animated show on the block. And just as we were getting to the point where Clone Wars really picks up!

On the other hand, this is technically the first time since Toonami came back that every slot on the block will (technically) be a different show...

Today marks the 15th Year Anniversary of ThunderCats (2011). While I find it unfortunate that the show was canceled before it had a chance to finish its story, I am glad that the show's art director was willing to give fans closure via a podcast interview.
Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
