C&C - Akira [12/20]

Pretty good. All I can say is that Kaneda and Kaori trapped in the mutated Tetsuo gave me claustrophobic nightmares.

Anyway, I definitely agreed about the whole Kei thing. They didn't really define her, despite Wendee Lee's superb performance. I mean, what is she doing? And in that scene where she disappears with one of those number kids, what's with her disappearing? Was she passing on or something? Well, that's not it, because she's alive and well after the climax. God, my brain hurts.

I think a good part of that problem comes from not addressing the political elements as much as they could. It's understandable that they couldn't cover a lot of the source material in the run time to explain, but it did prevent from explaining more about what Kei is even doing here besides being a plot device. She was just there in the climax, even though she disappeared for awhile.

If you missed Akira, it's on [adult swim] On Demand. Go to Adult Swim > AS Specials > Akira.

On some side notes, Joshua Seth recently linked to a video on his YT site he did a few years ago for the release of Akira on DVD. Apparently, Akira was the movie that inspired him to get into voice acting.

In addition, Seth explains why he retired from VA.

Oh that's perfect for me!

I dozed off until I woke up and saw the last 20-30 minutes of the film. And I didn't fall asleep because of the film itself. I just didn't get much sleep the night before and had a long day going out with my girlfriend (who was also going to see Akira for the first time on Toonami), which I don't regret because we had a good time and got to see Disney's Frozen.

That was interesting to learn about his journey into voice acting and how Akira plays a part in it. It's too bad that he retired from voice acting. He was really good. Joshua Seth and Johnny Yong Bosh were the best voice actors in this dub in my opinion and he has done a great job in the other roles I've heard him in. It was understandable why he retired if he felt too confined with all of his projects, even though he did enjoy them, and wanted more direct feedback from the audience, but it's still too bad that he retired. I always wondered about why he stopped so suddenly though.

Cool, it's on my On Demand so I guess I can watch it now. Definitely wasn't staying up until 3 for this. =3=

Go pause and play!

That kid is going to have nightmares forever seeing those dogs get shot up.

Ugliest kid since the seahorse blower from One Piece.
Okay, maybe ugliest kids. Seems the short, fat one doesn't want to get out done.

TETSUO. First of the night (or day for me).

lmao rioter got launched.

Asking for their best race car driver impressions.

"Haul the wounded! By dragging them across the pavement!"

"Banzai, Aizen-sama!"

Whoa, 25-years-old. They must age quick in Akiraverse.

Are level 7 capsules safe? I don't ask. The grandpas you have running around.

The power of a god in a biker gang punk. Seems safe.a

Discipline hurts.

That's a bad place to stop. And they got smacked.
And the other guys get smacked. A regular Ichigo Kurosaki, All he needs is a partner name "A-Rukira" and we're all set.

Occupy Wall Street really gets dangerous in a few years.

These kids really need to go outside. Their blue skin isn't healthy.

Oh, look "Akira."

I don't know, man. Questions that might kill you might be seen as foolish as well.

Attack on Teddy Bears: the walls are made of teddy bears!

"It's blood!" Absolutely disgusting! -3-

She brought a gun to a Gatling gun fight. pewpewpew

I think died doing what they loved: screaming and yelling.

The titan has broken through the wall!

Combine all of our powers!

Where is Akira? Where is RUKIA?

"You're saying he's managed to escape?" We can see that he's done so.

Well, at least he didn't kill him. Just a flesh wound. (b'.')b

"WHAT DA HELL U TALKIN ABOUT? YOU LOOK LIEK A DAMn CRACK HEAD!"

It's a trap so let's go further!

Tets looks healthy. False messiah? Burn the heathen!

Yes, it might be those kids talking.

[insert Godzilla/Turtle King joke here]

Akira is ... dead!

Yeah, I can see why he always treated you like a kid. You're dangerous when you get angry.

"But muh science!"

It's amazing how Akira fits in so little jars.

"I can't believe it! He's also a titan!"

Big Bang Punch!

Remember the bike. RIP Canon sticker! ;_;

Woo, movie over. Good thing I didn't need to stay up 'til 3 for the whole thing.

Here the You Tube link if anyone want to see it.

And from the comments.

Just to be clear, if I were asked to reprise the role of Tai I would say YES. I would do it, for the nostalgia. So no one needs to petition me. The fans need to petition the studio and director who are doing the new Digimon so they will ask me. They need to be petitioned. I will accept if asked

Tai only has like one or two lines in Boy Hunters Who Leap Through Time right?

I seem to recall that he only said a quick line or two. If Saban even finishes dubbing the series they'd probably just use another actor. I can't see them really making an effort to get him (or any of the other VAs) back if it's too much trouble for them.

I got up this morning and read up on the movie on Wikipedia which cleared up most things up for me. I'm glad I gave this movie another chance a decade after I've last seen it. I have a greater appreciation of this movie. Though not necessarily a favorite of mine, this truly is one of the greatest animated films ever made. My only concerns now are minor, like did Akira's powers created a new universe the last time he exploded? Did he die when he exploded, or did scientists later kill him for study? Was Tetsuo going to explode? Did Akira also mutate before he exploded? Did Akira call out for Tetsuo throughout the movie because he knew all this would happen?

Also, I found out (and saw in the credits) that Telecom / TMS Entertainment animated this movie.
TMS really is one of the best animation studios ever.

This was probably the first movie that made me realize that movies that force you to use your brain are actually a good thing, and really can be better than movies that spoonfeed you all the answers.

Unfortunately, that's probably true. None of the older characters that appear have more than a couple of lines, so they probably wouldn't get him back. Shame since it would be awesome to hear him playing Tai again and his performance would be the only good thing about seeing that sad excuse for a crossover again, but that probably won't happen. At least he would be fine with coming back into the role if asked, so that's pretty cool.

I thought Joshua Seth was a really good VA, but I can agree with his reasoning for leaving. With that said, if he can reprise the role of Tai, that would be awesome, even if for those brief lines.

Two days later & I'm still completely enamored with this movie. It just feels like this bizarre & beautiful lovechild of Blade Runner, The Warriors, & Carrie. I heard about it's reputation for years, so I'm really thankful that I got to see it for myself. Akira just shot up the list of things I want for Christmas. The blu-ray, the manga, I just want everything related to this!

Same here. Seth leaving the field for stage work was unexpected, but not unheard of - plenty of VA's have changed their careers. Mark Gatha (the voice of Domon on G-Gundam) became a doctor.

The manga's great but the major caveat I have with it is the translation is 20 years old and rife with errors.

I am unfamiliar with any non-english translated version of the manga, but I take Dalek's word that they take some unnecessary liberties with it. My biggest issue with the english version while I was reading it is the terribly unprofessional spelling mistakes and, well, the fact it's flipped. Also the fact that they can never keep Kaisuke's name consistent (I mean...c'mon is that so hard?). But even so...the english version of the manga is still pretty readable problems aside, honestly. I personally think you'd enjoy it just fine, Talon, and you definitely should read it if you loved the movie. Just keep in mind that there are some problems with the translation to be wary of.

I haven't read the Akira manga since high school, right around the time I was really starting to get into anime/manga, and I didn't really notice any major translation errors. Now, I can understand making the occasional odd mistake, but those should be proofread and corrected on subsequent printings.

As for the flipping, yeah, between this and Lone Wolf and Cub, I find it kind of hard to believe that there are English publishers that still do that, especially for such acclaimed series. It's the main reason I haven't yet bought the Akira manga.

I asked this at the beginning of this thread but it got buried quickly so I'll ask again since the manga subject came up. Has anyone read the Marvel colorization of the manga? I really want to get it but not if they censor stuff, which I'm worried about since they released it in the early 90s. I've heard the color job is outstanding though.

Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
