Well, I figured we could make one since it's now official: Hotel Transylvania: Transformania's theatrical release has been canned and Prime Video is paying $100 million for the rights.

The film will still release in China, and Sony retains home video and linear TV rights (so expect the movie to potentially show up on Disney networks at some point once the exclusive window is up).

I feel like this is the smarter move...
As long as vaccines aren't yet cleared for <12 year olds it's the only move they can make besides another delay, which they've already done for Venom 2 (though encouragingly, it was only by a month).

I figured this would have gone to Netflix.
I figured too, but Netflix's wallets are a bit thinned at the moment thanks to the insane overall deals with talent they barely end up using, and their output deal doesn't kick in until next year's slate. Besides they already picked up Mitchell vs. the Machines and Vivo and those were already a hefty penny.

my theory is that netflix thought hotel Transylvania franchise is profitable to not get the fourth film sent to the streaming service so they let hotel Transylvania 4 out of the contract until after the film come out of theaters (which its not happening anymore due to covid)

and also you forgot wish dragon

I can see Encanto getting a duel release to Disney + and theaters, like Raya and Cruella.
Depends. Shang-Chi is getting a full-on theatrical release (abelit 45 days before D+ and despite Delta), Encanto isn’t coming until late November of this year, and children under 12 will most likely get their vaccinations before then (heck, maybe before either Addams Family 2 or Ron's Gone Wrong come out), so it might be too late for a dual release.

Will this affect the current plans for Addams Family 2, Ron's Gone Wrong, Encanto, and Sing 2?

Amazon owns MGM, so Adam's Family will likely appear on Amazon Prime and I bet Sing 2 will go to Peacock.

Amazon's MGM purchase is still pending, and said purchase might not happen this year. Also, Sing 2 isn't out until this December, and we might be in a better place regarding vaccinations. Heck, not everyone has, or wants, Peacock.

That didn’t stop Boss Baby 2 from getting a duel release of theaters and Peacock.

Yes, but it might not happen for Sing 2 when we get to, or closer to, this December.

But that's why Universal would put Sing 2 on Peacock, to make it more attractive to more people and there could be another wave in December, we don't know.

Can't they do a simultaneous theatrical/Peacock release like Boss Baby 2?

I was slightly surprised to this go on Amazon. I figured if made it would go to Netflix. Though Sandler's deal might be up, they still got outbid by Amazon.

I've been taking a look on Fandango.com, and according to them, select theatres owned by some chains like Cinemark Theatres and Marcus Theatres will be showing Sony Pictures' live-action Cinderella film, which they sold to Amazon. It looks like Amazon signed a deal with those chains. I wonder if this means that Transformania will be shown in select theatres owned by Cinemark and Marcus?

who knows, maybe if there's a chance that the "in theaters and soon on amazon prime" message would appeared at the end of the tv spots

Well, from looking at the info for the September 2021 content on Amazon Video and the movie info on Fandango, the live-action Cinderella film will come out in select theatres AND on Amazon Prime Video the same day on September 3rd, although the film will have Thursday night screenings in the select theatres on Sept. 2nd. I think this strategy will be used with Hotel Transylvania: Transformania as well.

Watched the live-action "Moana" today and felt nothing that special compared to the original 2016 film. In fact, I don't remember much from the first animated film, but I think they barely changed anything in the 2026 version
@Sam the Cartoonist is right, I've registered on this site two times and I've enjoyed it! :) I'd posted this back in 2016, over ten years ago!
