No more kid channels in Canada.

Update/Urgent News Flash: Nelvana isn't Shutting down like many have Rumoured but it's temporarily a Distribution-type of company for now according to the Globe and Mail

I think Canadian kids' channels are really being hit hard by streaming, and because the CRTC is not promoting Canadian content rules on streaming like it did on broadcasting, it makes the demand for Canadian cartoons lessen.

I learned that despite Canada use ATSC 3.0, they don't have digital subchannels as like you saw in the US that would have potential to expand to include kid channels. You would be lucky if you live closer to Detroit, Buffalo or Bellingham to get channels from the US.
It's been that way for years. I don't have any idea why Canada did not imvest in subchannels, not even CBC. But then again part of that must be due to the shutdowns of small-town stations that happened in the past twenty years, especially in recent years, where more licenses closed.

Oops, I means ATSC, not ATSC 3.0.

Yeah, not sure if it is true, I was told that many of TV stations in Canada are owned by cable and satellite TV companies that have conflict of interest, so they shut many of transmitters down to force viewers to subscribe to cable or satellite.

The regulator (CRTC) don't make easy for digital subchannels to be created like in the US.

Reminds me of what happened in Portugal. SIC and TVI are not owned by cable companies, but the cable lobby pressured people who only had terrestrial TV to move to cable at an affordable price when the analog shutdown was near (2011-2012). The government also bid for two new private services, one of which in 2016 was set to be a kids channel. But ultimately the plans were rejected and kids channels are a minority.

Only a couple of community stations in Canada use subchannels and those got approval from the CRTC.

I mean, if there was more leeway by the regulator, Teletoon could have gotten a minor reprieve as a diginet living off repeats of Corus' back catalog, as well as some acquired shows. The CanCon rate would be nearly 100%.

I don't love nor hate Caillou but it is just another preschool show.

Is it just me? I noticed a lot of people dislike Caillou.

Caillou.

Wow they really want us to hate linear kids tv. In its last hours.
Except they're using their latest CGI reboot for linear TV.

There are two reboots, a CGI one for linear and streaming and a 2D one for YouTube. Both of them by the same company just to confuse you.

The cartoon, is very very notable for being disliked. I'd say it's among the most disliked cartoon of it's era. While the show's reboot is toned down, it's still Caillou.

Yeah, Wildbrain is making 2 reboots. One is on the cheaper side to give a semi-popular Youtube channel enough content for a lifetime and the other is slightly more expensive and is CG-based and almost all preschool shows that hit it big are CG.

On the topic of Family, I believe even well into it's rebrand and shift into 24 hours they actually continued the "Good Night" and "Good Morning" promos.

Yeah, thanks largely to automatic playouts.

I think Family had color bars or a static slide when it was off air.

What you will notice with Family and to some extent the bulk of Canadian kids channels is that they are heavily automated. Even back then to some extent, sure you got new episodes but outside of that, you were watching basically the same fixed schedule with maybe a few adjustments every once and a while.

And Family went 24/7 much later than YTV did.

Pretty much, I think YTV's fate was sealed the moment The Zone cut the live-action segments. Which i would argue was one of the main reasons to keep watching the network, especially after it's schedules became subpar

Family actually used color bars. Around 2007 they went 24/7

Weirdly enough, it was at such an absurd time they might aswell of BEEN 24/7
I don't know how CRTC regulations worked for kids channels. The only ones I knew of that weren't 24/7 were Family and YTV.

- La Canal Familie/Vrak ended pretty early, when the network was in it's infancy it closed down at the earliest at 6PM! This trend continued til when the channel shut down
- Yoopa, im pretty much sure closed at 11PM/12AM
