Can our generation save the good stuff?

Let's face it television as we knew and love is slowly disappearing. With syndicated cartoons, Saturday morning cartoons on local networks, and other things we loved about our childhood about to go extinct we have incompetent network executives to thank for this. But do you think that one day people from our generation will grow up and become network executives themselves and bring back the TV we all knew and loved?

There's plenty to love today. Some "good stuff" is gone and that's sad but there's plenty of new "good stuff" happening now. No need to wallow in nostalgia.

One of the problem with bringing back old shows is whether all of the voice-actors can come back.

This isn't for our generations nostalgia it's for all the generations after ours and how they'll experience TV. They should know how we experienced our childhoods at least once in their lives.

if the old ways worked so well, it'd still be around. New execs would try to follow whatever future trends will exist.

We're never going to return to that era of television because that world doesn't exist anymore. Syndication is all but dead in this country and back then, the internet hadn't become mainstream and there was no cable or satellite TV. I don't feel sorry for today's kids; they have it far better than we did in terms of entertainment. I would have given my right arm to have a 24/7 channel solely devoted to kid vid programming. The world of TV isn't worse now than it was then. It's just different.

Well there's a lot of shows on that I currently like, I appreciate streaming and tv websites allowing their shows to be available online, and my only real issue are shows that get overplay like the Sponge, so this generation has good stuff.

This can change, but it requires a collective consciousness being willing to rethink they we've been trained to think for generations.

Anyway, it's not like there aren't any current cartoon shows starring girls; we've got My Little Pony: FiM, Littlest Pet Shop, Doc McStuffins, Sofia the First, the upcoming Star and the Forces of Evil, Totally Spies! and the recently announced return of the of The Powerpuff Girls. In addition, Boomerang will be rebranding itself to become more girl-centric come 4th quarter 2014, which potentially means more shows, both original and 3rd party, with female leads. These are baby steps, but they're better than nothing.

True but the whole girl show thing was just an example of the bad things network executives do, like prematurely cancelling shows or greenlighting terrible shows.

That's not a recent issue either. Network executives have been making bad decisions since the medium began. Shows get canceled because they get low ratings or if they cause the networks to lose more money than it costs to produce them. And no network exec thinks that a series is bad when they greenlight it. 'Terrible" is in the eye of the beholder.

Everyone, at some point their lives, has a terrible idea that they think is a burst of genius. Network execs are humans, and as such, they're subject to human short sightedness and human failings. Execs will always make bad decisions. There's no way to stop that from happening.

Well there's got to be something stupid that the network execs of today are making. Everyday I'm on the internet reading people's complaints about today's shows and to be honest I kind of agree with them.

People on the internet were complaining about what were then the current shows 10, 15, 20 years ago too, and people have been complaining about TV before there was an internet, only then they didn't have a single outlet to come together and vent about things. People are always going to find something to complain about. There are always going to be people hating on the new stuff. Some people are always going to complain about what's new and current and how "things were so much better in their day". Again, that's just life. Suck and fan wanking are eternal. They've always been with us, and they're always going to be with us. The thing about nostalgia is that it makes people forget about the bad and mediocre stuff from their time and it causes them to act as though the bad stuff never existed.

Okay so maybe shows from the past is not a big deal. But what about the shows that are currently on like Disney's decision to move Wander Over Yonder and Gravity Falls to Disney XD and have Disney Channel full of lame teen sitcoms, you have to admit that's pretty unnecessary. If you really hate how TV is these days, just watch your old favorite shows on DVD or iTunes, or just make your own stuff. That's easier to do now then ever.

Disney moved Wander Over Yonder and Gravity Falls to XD because outside of Phineas and Ferb, Disney's all-ages animated shows don't bring in the ratings that their live-action shows do, and the hard truth is that the Mouse House isn't as invested in their TV animations because their animated features and DTVs make them more money. You may think that Disney's teen sitcoms are lame, I'm sure a lot of people do, but the fact of the matter is that kids are watching them, so Disney keeps making more of them. They wouldn't keep churning out these tweencoms if kids didn't keep coming back for more.

Cartoon Network plays Teen Titans GO! a lot because it puts butts into seats. Shows which get high ratings get played a lot. It's no different than when Johnny Test got a lot of play on CN, or why Nick runs SpongeBob so much or how they used to run Rugrats a lot back in the day. Popular shows get a lot of airtime. CN doesn't run the original Teen Titans because it's over 10 years old and it's over. That show is considered Boomerang material now. It has nothing to do with consistency, whatever that means.

I mean no offense, but I'm really not sure what the major gripe in this thread is. All of these complaints I've been reading here are general things which TV has been doing for decades. None of these issues are specifically a generational thing, nor are they anything one specific generation can change.

Turner is still airing Teen Titans: TAS... on Boomerang. Sure, Turner could air the reruns of TT on Cartoon Network, but since the whole series is on DVD now, there's not much reason for them to. Would it be nice if CN still aired TT or Justice League/Unlimited? Sure it would, but those shows are done and new shows take precedent over canceled reruns. And again, I can always watch the DVDs if I ever find myself missing Justice League.
