Corpse Bride

Yeah, I guessed the entire story of the villain just from the trailers. However, I thought the song explaining her backstory (sung by Elfman) was absolutely fantastic...as good as any song in Nightmare. But all the others were forgettable. That one could've easily been the only one.

But I honestly thought the story and characterization were quite good, not just a setup for the animation.

holy crap! it's down 80% from its (poor) sunday! I mean, it's a family movie in september, but still ... http://boxofficemojo.com/daily/chart/
meh, it's fine...i just hope it's enough for Tim Burton to do another animated movie, hopefully truly his OWN, directed solely by HIM.

Well, I guess he's really just not a stop-motion animation director. That's what I figure since he didn't direct TNBC and he only partially directed this.

I thought the song Emily sung was also fantastic. The other two basically just served their purpose, but since those were the only songs, I wasn't really disappointed. And I loved the piano songs, which were arguably more important.

As I've found out, Tim Burton's films are an aquired taste. Some are good (TNBC), some are downright awful (Planet of the Apes). That, and the 'macabe' feel of this story may not appeal to the average joe moviegoer.

Their loss, I guess.

Though if they should have released it a little bit closer to Halloween, IMO. Even if it meant going up against a little movie called 'Wallace and Gromit'...

You've also got to remember it's a Monday...Who goes to the movies on a Monday?

It made half it's budget in it's opening weekend, it'll recoup that if not by the end if it's theatrical run, then in DVD sales and the insane amount of merchandise that apparently Hot Topic has (as if I'd dare step into the store and not loose my soul ;) ). Chill.

Also, from what I hear...Burton doesn't want to direct a film like this by himself. He said in a CS! interview that he's not patient enough to deal with the mind-numbingly painstaking task of animating in a stopmotion medium. I believe he credited this to his jumping from animating for Disney to directing live action films. As far as I'm aware...when it came to CB, all he did was craft the art and craft the story, then help guide the overall project along it's way.

Does anybody honestly really care anymore where something is sold? Products are products, and I intend to buy cool things from this movie wherever available.

Just saw it today.

We were late to the theater and I'm not sure how much we missed (it was the wedding rehearsal scene).

Overall, I enjoyed it. It was sweet and cute, I love gothic Victorian stuff, and I'll gladly buy the DVD when it comes out. The piano songs were great, but I wasn't feeling a lot about the lyrical songs - they were just kind of... there. The romance was adorable without being mushy, and that's cool :)

Close enough to a talkback for my purposes.

Tim Burton's Corpse Bride

As a 46 year old liker of quirky British period comedy, I kind of dug it. The bigger question to me is if any kid who saw this would like it.

I'm guessing almost none. The Land of the Dead has some good scares and gross-out humor, but most of the movie is drearily dull and it is definitely the most boring of Tim Burton's stop-motion cartoons he either directed or produced. Not to mention almost all of the characters are nasty and unpleasant outside of Victor, Victoria, and the Corpse Bride herself. I believe this was a box office failure. Easy to see why. I actually picture this movie as the kind of thing a high quality demanding adult would believe would be appropriate to raise their precocious kids on, but the kid themselves would think of it as a punishment.

Maybe I'm wrong there too about the potential class status of the parents. Maybe the kid is crying out to see a Wallace and Gromit cartoon or The Nightmare Before Christmas and the Mom's like, "You'll watch Corpse Bride out of the bargain DVD bin at Costco and like it!"

Either way, I don't see this as a remotely pleasant experience for a kid. It deals entirely with adults and adult problems (an arranged marriage no less), which is not something any kid can possibly relate to. It's not even a real-world adult problem that will effect them when they get older. It's a bad fit for a kids movie.

There are two things I really liked that I'll give it credit for, even if no sane kid ever would. I thought the British voices coming out of the characters sounded incredibly rich. I don't mean wealthy. I mean the voices were deep and powerful like the best British voices. These are not actors best known for cartoons. But their voices are memorable and unique enough to come out of cartoon characters. Christopher Lee should have been acting in a lot more cartoons than he did.

The second compliment is allowing Victor and Victoria to end up together. A lesser movie would have picked The Bride as Victor's ultimate 'ship. But he clearly did not want that 'ship and was only being nice, so I found it bittersweet the Corpse Bride lets him go at the end instead.

Ultimately, I enjoyed more than I didn't. But I'm an adult with a relatively sophisticated taste when it comes to cartoons and TV shows. I imagine kids doing nothing but fidgeting in the theater, and being bored out of their skulls watching that. ***1/2.

Last night started watching a new adult animated series, a Netflix original that is basically the succesor to Big Mouth.

What is so great? Despite being a 18+ show, they actually bothered to give it a Romanian dub :ack::eek:
