"Dandadan" Season Two Talkback (Spoilers)

It is kinda rare that we a see a battle shonen romance with this much warmth and affection compared to the usual romances that are normal for the genre. There might be a few misunderstandings and arguments, but Momo is not really a tsundere architype and there's not many (if any) "girl comedically beats the crud out of the guy over minor thing" gags. It's not the mostly offscreen romance that's only shown in the epilogue. It's just rare to see the shonen couple show affection prior to the last episode and that's refreshing and heartwarming.

DanDaDan-Season-2-Episode-4.jpg

"We finally have the absolutely insane climax to Jiji’s introductory arc and its a huge battle with tons of unexpected cameos in the biggest brawl this series has seen. Let’s recap the sheer spectacle of this big bombastic finale to the story arc.

We begin with the ghoul cult berating Momo for killing the giant worm as they believe the human sacrifices and keeping it appeased prevented the wrath of the volcano god. Momo has a different idea of how to stop the volcano and decides to use the dead worm’s body as a fire hose as the goo it spits out appears to be able to cool down lava. The cult are not happy with her desecrating the worm’s body and engage her in a fight. The rest of the episode is a huge multi-man fight sequence which keeps adding unexpected players.

Our first surprise appearance is the comic relief shrine guy from the season premiere. We learn that Seiko is his sensei, a very surprising revelation. He is able to fight off the creepy cult people with gusto despite our initial impressions of him being a comedic buffoon. He’s not the last comic relief character we’ll see in this fight. All of a sudden Evil Eye Jiji comes and attacks both the cult and the shrine guy. The cult decides to have a truce with Momo and the shrine guy. They team up against Evil Eye Jiji, who turns out to be one tough customer, but a cavalcade of unexpected cameos comes to save the day."

Episode 5 (17) "We Can All Stay There Together" - July 31, 2025
Jiji is still possessed by Evil Eye, but Momo and Okarun return to everyday life, and Aira joins their ranks as a countermeasure against Evil Eye. Okarun and Aira end up staying over at Momo's house.

It's time to exorcise the Evil Eye out of Jiji! I mean, we've got Seiko without glasses and all dressed up Priestess style along with Momo and Manjiro! We've got Mantis Shrimp and Okarun praying! There's no way this can fail! Okay, never mind, Evil Eye is still there! Poor Jiji!

I can't believe they left out the main character! Aira is absolutely livid! And just helping herself to a meal she didn't earn! And she definitely didn't want to see Mantis Shrimp again, but she can't deny the utter cuteness that is Chiquitita.

Turns out there's one surefire way to bring Jiji back...hot water! That's right, cold water brings forth the Evil Eye, hot water brings Jiji back! Jiji's effectively become Ranma Saotome.

Won't someone think of poor Taro who just wants to be able to use his body normally and see his beloved Hana?

I'm glad Peeny Weeny and Chiquitita have found a solid dayjob on Earth so Chiquitita can have all the milk he needs to grow into a big, strong, Mantis Shrimp! In fact they're not even that far away! It works out for everybody.

The gang may be on their way to check in on Jiji's parents, but that doesn't mean Okarn and Momo aren't going to engage in some backseat flirting...especially when they start out with some lewd pinkie-touches before Momo just has her way with Okarun's hand! Girl just feeling it up as much as she possibly can! Down girl!

I'm glad Jiji's family is okay and I'm glad the Kito Family was finally arrested...outside the matriarch who escaped. And turns out to not be human at all, a Subteranean swearing absolute vengeance against Momo! This won't end well.

Look at how happy Momo is to walk to school with Okarun! Could do without imagining Alien Serpo's doing the Hayashi performance they need to exorcise Jiji, but I appreciate seeing Miko and Kei again.

School isn't so great for Aira though because now her class is ostracizing her, even her gal pals, so she's left all alone...but at least now she's got Okarun and Momo, even if she isn't willing to cop to being close to Momo Ayase of all people. But neither she nor Okarun can resist the idea of a sleepover at Momo's place.

I love how Aira shows up later in the cutest outfit because she couldn't help herself.

What a warm and friendly family dinner! Momo and Aira exchange beauty tips, Okarun and Jiji are planning to game together! Everyone is having fun and enjoying each others' company! Until Evil Eye comes back and wrecks everything. Darn.

Jiji humming/singing the iconic first opening("Don't Make Me Wild Like You") to the original Ranma 1/2 series was not something on my bingo card. Even the English dub kept this, which is pretty cool.

Of course it wasn't gonna be easy getting rid of Evil Eye. A mountain spirit revered as a god would definitely put it at high tier (funnily enough, this is the subject of "The Summer Hikaru Died" on Netflix). The hot/cold water angle makes it even more complicated for the gang. I think we'll see the antics play out next episode but I doubt they will keep that up long term. There has to be some kind of bargain they can make with Evil Eye that it would like aside from destroying humanity. Technically, he's a boy. And incorporated Jiji's soccer skills in his attack. Maybe a game of some sort and make a bet so if EE loses, he has to follow the rules.

Very hilarious that's Mantisan's real name or the elaborate method of going home when they could have walked. lmao. Or you know, he's not engaging cloaking mode for his ship and it's showing up on social media, rofl.

Momo's friends seem to be warming up to Okarun...

And Aira's popularity is still precarious. Doesn't help when Momo grabs her in front of her class, lol.

Jiji.webp

"Despite the previous episode feeling like a definitive climax, it appears that the Jiji possession arc is not over and will continue on for several episodes. While last episode was an action epic, this episode was a hilarious comedic gut buster with advancements in the Momo/Okarun romance. Without further ado, let’s recap the hijinks.

The episode begins with priests chanting a prayer to get Jiji unpossessed. Each time they open up the anatomical model he was trapped in last episode to see if he’s unpossessed. They keep thinking “is he unpossessed yet,” and checking but it turns out he’s still possessed. The “is he unpossessed yet,” “no,” gag sets us off on a good start."

Episode 6 (18) "We Became a Family" - August 7, 2025
Jiji's transformation into Evil Eye intensifies. The group tries to exorcize Evil Eye from Jiji's body with a Hayashi performance. They invite the Hayashi and almost succeed in pushing Evil Eye out, but Jiji pleads with them to not kill Evil Eye…

Dang, Evil Eye is like the WORST dinner guest! Just totally thrashes the place until you spray hot water on him and poor Jiji is left getting thwacked by Turbo Granny and scolded by Aira in his tightie-whities. Have some consideration, Evil Eye.

Well, they wanted a Hayashi, what they got is...Hayasii! A visual kei band who exorcises with the power of metal and rock! And Kisho Taniyama's voice! The band may not have any actual spiritual awareness, but that makes them perfect exorcists because they can't be tempted by the ravenous army of spirits they summon with their hardcore playing! Cue headbanging!

Jiji is a really, really good kid. Even after everything Evil Eye has done, despite the inconvenience to his own life, he genuinely still wants to play with him and give him the friendship and life he was denied. Because deep down the Evil Eye is still that crying child. And Seiko can't bring herself to go against her favorite genius. What's one more supernaturally powered kid for Seiko to take in.

I love how Hayasii are so polite and march off with rock noises.

It's not very compassionate but understandable on Aira's part that she doesn't think they should have to inconvenience themselves over Jiji's selfishness regarding the Evil Eye. Though if her beloved Takakura-kun is willing to get stronger to help keep Evil Eye in check for his bro Jiji's sake, what else can she do but commit to it as well? And yet another thing for her and Momo to get in a catfight over.

Time for Jiji to learn to manage his chi! Maybe if he masters that, he can control the Evil Eye on his own terms! And despite all the complaints Momo dishes out, she took to Granny Seiko's teachings well.

Jiji and the gang have to be ESPECIALLY careful during late-night bathroom runs, but at least they're learning to manage all the damage to the house as well as making sure Jiji stays as far away from cold water as possible. Just look at Momo, still half asleep, and still checking to make sure everything is okay with Jiji! While Aira just loudly snores away.

Aira has a very thorough and involved morning routine! But that means she's already at 100% come breakfast and is ready to face the day with Okarun! And what better way to head to school than Momo and Aira trying to talk @#$% about each other to Okarun while Jiji enthusiastically sends them of?

It's time for Momo to get a part-time job! She's given up on a cellphone, but she has to fix up her house! Just like her gal pals have to fix up Okarun for a "date," only it's not really with them...they were just dragging him to go see Momo at her new job. At a maid cafe! Yes, we've got Maid Momo and she looks absolutely cute! All the better when embarrassed about being caught by Okarun!

This show continues to crack me up week to week. The band being super meek then totally rock when they're playing, Momo and Aira constantly fighting e/o, and Momo's friends nabbing Okarun to surprise Momo at work. :D A maid cafe, lmao.

Granny continues to be the coolest. Sparing Evil Eye the exorcism, telling Okarun to pay it forward instead of taking his money, training Jiji. not freaking out her house got totaled.

I think we have a definite solve. Jiji kept saying Evil Eye just wanted to play because he was locked up as a kid. So far only Okarun was able to knock him out, so I think it's gonna be a bargain-if Evil Eye behaves and doesn't kill all of humanity, Okarun will periodically "play" with him.

This week's episode was really good. As a fan of rock music I think "Hunting Soul" is such a exciting banger song, and I've never expected to like a J-rock song. :D

"Dan Da Dan: “We Become a Family” Episode 18 Recap"

Dan-Da-Dan-Episode-18-closeup.jpg

"This week’s episode is another successful comedy outing for Dan Da Dan featuring the power of rock! Without further ado, let’s discuss the wackiness in this week’s episode.

The big cliffhanger was quickly and easily solved by just splashing Jiji with water. Turbo Granny gets upset at Jiji for his mistake and spanks him with plywood in a slapstick scene. It turns out that Seiko hired just the right people for exorcising the Evil Eye. It turns out she hired a 1980s style hair metal band, who in the English dub, have Spinal Tap-esque British accents. Hey I just dug up on the Internet that the voice of this cartoon band’s lead singer is Marc Hudson, lead singer of the 2000s metal band most famous for “Through the Fire and Flames,” a song Guitar Hero fans know very well.

The band warms up and appear to be…not so talented as the bassist has a string break and the drummer clumsily handles his drumsticks. When they actually perform however, they rock hard. So hard that they cause the main cast to headbang to their rocking tunes. It’s a highly theatrical show full of pyrotechnics, the problem is that Jiji is not enjoying it. It appears that the power of rock is used to exorcise spirits as they have Jiji placed in a bed as he acts as if he is in severe discomfort. Momo uses her psychic powers to try to restrain Jiji as he writhes and shakes. He has traumatic flashbacks to the Evil Eye’s sad and lonely past and doesn’t want Evil Eye to be banished to the afterlife. He begs and pleads and Seiko pulls out a fire extinguisher and cancels the exorcism, reminding the rest of the cast about how the Evil Eye was once a sad and lonely little boy. It starts to rain and they pull Jiji into shelter as fast as possible."

Episode 7 (19) "Feeling Kinda Gloomy" - August 14, 2025
Jiji struggles in keeping him at bay. Jiji turns into Evil Eye and assaults Momo. With some quick thinking, Momo somehow manages to get through the situation, while Okarun is determined to get stronger so he can send Evil Eye packing.

I love how Okarun is so utterly stupefied at the maid cafe...because he can't mentally process whether he should look at maid Momo or look away...and he can't help but look at how cute she looks!

I guess it stands to reason Momo wouldn't be the most natural at a service job, though I guess if you want an angry, crass, maid then Momo is your girl! And her friends totally set her up with this job because it would be such a waste if they didn't, and they're going to make her service them with the absolute class of a maid! Complete with a MOE MOE TRI-BEAM to make everything more delicious!

I have to wonder where Momo's friends would've dragged Okarun to afterwards...but that he wanted to stay was the correct choice which means he earned the picture of them all together!

Aw, Okarun wants to stay until Momo is done! But Momo can't let him wait that long, even if as he walks away she looks so sad and longing.

(Anyone notice that Science Patrol logo from Ultraman on one of the posters?)

Y'know, when Momo actually gets into it, she doesn't seem like a half-bad maid, delighting men, women, and children alike! Though as the hours drag on she just wants to be DONE. Only without Okarun there with her, she's all alone...except not, BECAUSE OKARUN WAITED AND CAME BACK! And who better to hold hands with while you walk home together in the cold night air? These two can't get enough of each others' hands.

I'm glad to see Jiji's training is going well to the point where he can manage to stop the transformation into Evil Eye if he gets hit with some soy sauce. Maybe he'll be able to go back to a normal life yet at this rate.

I love Seiko acting like a parent wondering where Momo's been out late at night and when she got a job...though Jiji and Aira are also keen to know what Okarun and Momo have been doing together...which comes together in an incident that once again unleashes the Evil Eye. And this time he's caught on to what they're doing and knows how to block their hot water with his Cursed Home barrier, all the better to kill Momo with.

Poor Momo getting her clothes ripped off for the umpteenth time. But sasuga Momo to have had hot water in her mouth to spit in Evil Eye's face! This was a close one, but they managed to survive it, even if Jiji isn't taking it well...or seeing Okarun push him away and be so close to Momo.

Even Aira feels bad! Which is a pretty big development for her! But it's Okarun who is taking it as a sign that he needs to get even stronger to protect Momo. Too bad Peeny Weeny, who has adjusted to life on Earth, believes violence is bad and would rather put Okarun to work on his farm than training him to punch harder. I also love how Mr. Shrimp's alien eyes are popping out of his human form.

Learning to punch from Shonen Manga isn't going to get Okarun anywhere, he needs to go back to the source: Turbo Granny, the being that gave him his powers, who is going to teach him to use them right for her reputation if nothing else.

Of course Aira hasn't gotten enough Takakura-kun time to herself, so she's obviously going to join him in sneaking into the school at night and being as cute as ever...while also being as crass and insulting towards the third wheel Turbo Granny as possible. But it's the Acro-Silky's influence, honestly! Even when she accidentally punched Okarun in the face!

It's all about rhythm! Aira's got it, Evil Eye's got it, Okarun just needs to master it to be able to full utilize Turbo Granny's power! Who it turns out can actually play the piano surprisingly well! Though the music turns supernatural when famous musicians with giant heads all pop out at them!

Jjii's training is coming along well enough but it's not enough when Evil Eye is in the mix. And worse yet, you can't use the same tactic against him again. Good thing Momo had drank some of the hot water. May not be so lucky next time.

Okarun always the gentleman. Hilarious when he realized Mantis uses a human disguise and gets super excited but couldn't get any training. Guess teaching alien fighting to a human is taboo. But pretty funny Turbo Granny has as usual mask her intentions - she's annoyed Okarun isn't using her powers the right way so she has no choice but to train him. Okarun is at a disadvantage since Jiji has some athleticism with soccer whereas Okarun had no prior training that would help him in his Turbo form so he fights too basic and needs to level up with... music and dance. Ok, kinda of like football players taking ballet. I guess. Of course, there would be a supernatural element to it, lol.

The stomp mark on Granny's cheek, lmao. Been awhile Acro-Silky.

"Dan Da Dan: “Feeling Kinda Gloomy” Episode 19 Recap"

Heart-Photo-Dan-Da-Dan-.webp

"If last week’s episode was about the power of rock, this week’s was about the power of classical music as we had some very unexpected ghosts show up. This episode further developed the Evil Eye plotline and Momo and Okarun’s relationship. Without further ado, let’s recap the episode.

The episode begins with Momo being very grouchy and not enjoying her job, being further humiliated with Okarun seeing her at the job. She is not at all good at acting like a cutesy maid, yelling swear words and the like. After eating there, Okarun offers to help walk her home. He leaves and she continues to work in anger and frustration at the job. When her miserable shift is finally over they do walk home and Momo and Okarun hold hands.

Meanwhile, Jiji is learning chi control to keep the Evil Eye in check. He can use his chi to prevent lukewarm water from forcing him to transform. Cold water is another story though. Momo and Okarun finally make it to Momo’s place. One of them comedically bumps into Jiji and spills water on him, making him transform and stuff gets serious. The Evil Eye savagely attacks Momo and she uses her psychic powers to defend herself. Still, the Evil Eye rips her clothes off in a savage attack and it looks like she is about to get into serious danger. Fortunately for her, she hadn’t swallowed a hot drink she was drinking and spit at the Evil Eye, forcing him to transform back into Jiji. Okarun shows signs of fury and wants to take it to the Evil Eye."
