Apparently Christina Vee (Mio in K-on!) and Kate Higgins (Sakura in Naruto) are in the dub. Vee is playing Meiko, and Kate is Meeicomon.

Well, not really happy about the cast changes. I figured Eddie Mirman wasn't going to be back, so that was a given for Gatomon. But I have no idea why they changed Kari and Matt voice talents. It just irks me that whoever is producing don't have Laura Jill Miller and Micheal Reisz to reprise the roles. I know Miller is willing to play Kari again.
As for Kate Higgins as being also Gatomon.... Sort of mixed on that. Higgins is great and did a good job as Ami in Sailor Moon. But I fear one thing: that Gatomon is going to start sounding like Sakura.

I'm not too surprised that Matt's voice actor was replaced. I'm not sure if he has done anything since Frontier and he didn't even reprise his role for the movie either. While I still think that Johnny Yong Bosh would be a better fit as Matt than TK, Vic Mignonga is a good choice too. I liked his performance in the Xros Wars dub and he's a good voice actor all around, so I think he'll be a good fit.

Awesome! That's fantastic news. I was really hoping that he'd reprise his role for the movies. While I can totally understand why he retired from voice acting, it will be nice to hear him do some voice acting work again.
As for the opening theme, it's pretty bad. Although, it does remind me of the original dub opening and that's probably what they were going for. It's too bad that the dub opening for Digimon has not aged that well at all and seeing it mixed with the Butterfly opening footage is really jarring.

Fathom Events has released two dub clips. It's great hearing Joshua Seth as Tai again, but I'll have to get used to Kari's new voice.

Back from the screening, and it was uplifting :3
I went and it was definitely fantastic. The audience at the theater reacted so well to everything too, Agumon's first line got several people cheering and every time Tentomon said something there were quite a few laughs. The whole cast, returning and new VAs alike, was great.
Also, they kept all the Japanese music save for the opening, which has grown on me a little despite being a somewhat poor emulation of the old Paul Gordon (RIP) theme. Brave Heart is awesome.

Now that I'm back and rested, I can discuss a few non spoilery things:
The Replaced Op
Yup, they replaced Butterfly, but replaced it with a theme that nostalgically invokes the original Digimon theme, both good and bad aspects. Naturally, I was both cringing and laughing at first.
But now thinking about it, th music itself seems to work better for Butterfly in theme. As awesome as the original song is, Butterfly doesn't invoke cyberpunk - at least to those of us American kids who grew up in the 90s. Digimon is basically post cyberpunk meets kaiju, and Tri itself feels closer to Tamers in theme. If anything, the Dub opening music sets up the rest of the movie.

As I generally do, I tend to wait until the Dub is out before watching a show. Though alas I could not avoid some spoilers, this was the first time seeing the movie. And as a movie, it made me feel much happier than I have in a long, long time. Movies today seem depressing, even comic book movies. Tri brought back that hope and energy I once had watching Adventure back in 1999.

Reunion is part celebration and part introduction, to both fans and new folks. The movie takes it time to let the characters connect before the action picks up. It's a return to the old gang and the beginning of a new party, with much to be both nostalgic and surprising. Though anyone could watch and enjoy it, the fans are the ones who would get the most out of it. It's discovering home again.

Well, I can check off "watch a Digimon film in theaters" off my bucket list. I greatly enjoyed it; as someone who loves the characters, some of my favorite scenes were just character interaction. Not that the action scenes were lacking.
I did get frustrated with Tai being so indecisive, but otherwise all character development felt natural. The new voices all worked, and the returning ones fit like a glove.
I do hope the next films all get theatrical releases too.

It turns out that there was a theater close to where I live playing this last week. I should have checked into that sooner, but I probably wouldn't have gone anyway. It would have been a bit tricky to figure out how to get to the movies on a Thursday night. The clips did sound pretty great and hearing Joshua Seth as Tai again was awesome. I've read a few posts that describe how happy people were over the movie theaters and that is really sweet. It shows that the Digimon nostalgia is strong here as well. I'll have to wait until the dub version is either available on Crunchyroll or released on DVD to watch it in English, but it sounds pretty good and I have heard that the voice acting was pretty solid all around, so that's cool.
I hope it's FUNimation; that would all but guarantee that it would also bring the sub (a first for Digimon)
Ended up not finding time to hit the screening, but I'm sure the dub will turn up eventually. If part 2 hits theaters I'll definitely do that one.

That would be pretty awesome. Considering that they already have the movies streaming on Crunchyroll, I think that the chances of getting the sub along with the dub for the DVD release are pretty good.
I don't know if I'd be able to watch part 2 in a theater myself, but I'll have to at least check it out sooner to see if it is playing in my area. I totally forgot that Confession will air tomorrow. I thought it was delayed for Crunchyroll for awhile, but maybe I'm mixing it up with the movie itself being delayed. Plus, all of the Pokemon Sun/Moon news lately probably factored into me forgetting about the new Digimon Adventure Tri movie.
Because I felt bad over not covering my thoughts on Confession for so long, I'll just put my review in a spoiler tag here:
I enjoyed Determination. It was a bit more light-hearted than I expected, but that does make sense. They needed some downtime after the major events from the last movie, have Meiko interact more with the other Chosen Children and setup stuff for Mimi and Jo. I was just expecting the downtime to be just the whole hot springs trip rather than a good portion of the movie. There were also more fanservice-y moments than I expected, even with the hot springs trip in mind. At least it was closer to equal opportunity than just for the female leads, it wasn't shoved into the audience's faces and it was still pretty tame stuff all things considered. There were funny moments with those fanservice-y moments, so that helped too.
I don't remember Mimi being nearly this awesome in the original series, but I haven't watched it subbed yet and the lack of the Valley Girl accent probably helps. Her bubbly upbeat personality was a nice treat during the first movie, but it feels even better with her getting a good portion of the focus. She's just so fun and likable to watch. Her interactions with Meiko were sweet since she genuinely wanted to help her feel more comfortable around the group. They're polar opposites, but their friendship felt nice and endearing to me. I thought that the whole Daters thing was weird, but the cheerleader outfits weren't too bad. It was blatant fanservice, but at least there was some reasoning behind it and it doesn't bother me as much as that promotional poster of the female leads baking stuff in bikinis. Although, Mimi saying that America loves what was basically supposed to be Hooters was just weird. And thinking that it's fun to work there to boot. That poor naive child.
Mimi's conflict was pretty interesting. She obviously wouldn't want to fight Oregmon or any of the other Digimon friends they've made, but charging head first without a plan really backfired. She did have good intentions, but it really made the problem worse. If the group had fought together, that might have helped, but doing it all on her own was not a good idea and I was kind of glad that Koshiro called her out for that. While I could see why he would say that Mimi has an egocentric side to her, I think it's more like she just jumps into an idea without really thinking things through rather than only thinking about herself. That might be the same thing in some cases or it could just be the way it's worded to me. She does speak her mind, doesn't want to hold back and just jumps into what she thinks would be best for everyone.
Her scene with Jo was quite nice and it showed why it was a good idea to make them the focus of this movie. They've never been one of the big fighters of the group, especially Jo, and they were able to connect due to their friendship. They did have those episodes where they separated from the group back during the Dark Master arc too. Jo's conflict also tied into his character nicely. The whole wanting to become an adult struggle was relatable, but more tellingly, he was using it as a cover to his real problem. He didn't want to fight anymore. He already has the struggles of exams to deal with and he never was a fighter, so being thrown into another battle at this point of his life probably didn't sit well with him. Taichi kind of standing up for Jo was also rather telling. Hikari pretty much hit the mark in that there was something that Taichi wasn't ready to face yet. That was an interesting way to connect Taichi and Jo's conflicts together. Even with the last movie in mind, Taichi still hasn't found an answer or has made peace with what they have to do. While I do understand where Taichi is coming from and it still makes sense with his character, I'd have to agree with Yamato and Hikari completely. Things would be way worse if they didn't do anything, but that doesn't make the stress of what damage they could have done in their attempts to save the city any easier for him I imagine.
Mimi's resolution to her problem was a bit quick, but Meiko being happy about wearing the outfit would be enough to lift Mimi's spirits. Plus, Mimi just being happy and not caring about what others say was sweet and admirable. I wish I had that kind of attitude back in high school, or now for that matter. Like I mentioned before, the cheerleader outfits were weird, but the fanservice was still fairly tame. Koshiro rushing down there to see her and his reaction upon seeing her were hilarious. His crush is more endearing than I thought it would be. As for Jo, I thought it was sweet how worried he was about Gomamon and how he rushed over to the school as soon as he got the text. Thinking that he needed a reason to fight or why they were still the Chosen Children made sense with his character, but the moment Gomamon was in danger and Hikari confronted him about it, his doubts and hesitation were cleared. It was a good moment and his brief conversation with Mimi was a nice follow-up to their scene earlier in the movie.
The fight at the end was quite good and it was awesome to see Palmon and Gomamon reach their Mega forms. The animation still looked good and hearing Brave Heart always makes a scene more awesome. Plus, I liked that we still saw Gomamon get to his Champion level first, so maybe the opening theme will update with his Champion level for the third movie. The mysterious emails Koshiro got could tie into why they were able to unlock their new evolutions.
So they all recognized Ken was the Digimon Emperor, even though his hair still looks way too much like a blue version of Taichi's hair. There goes my theory that they lost their memories about the Adventure 02 kids somehow. That makes me wonder why the Adventure 02 cast weren't mention in the last movie even more, especially when they seemed to act like they didn't ever have a new Chosen Child in their group before. More importantly, why the heck was everyone okay with fighting and seemingly destroying Imperialdramon? I suppose they could have thought it was a different Imperialdramon, but that seems pretty unlikely. Mimi didn't want to fight Ogremon when it was an Infected Digimon, but no one batted at eye destroying Imperialdramon or wonder where Daisuke and the others could be if Ken is back as the Digimon Emperor. I'm sure that they just want to make the whole conflict with the Infected Digimon more mysterious and wanted a reason to write the Adventure 02 kids out of the action so the focus can be on the original Adventure group, but it just seems really weird and we don't have a whole lot to go on besides Ken being the Digimon Emperor again.

Plus, I don't think that Meicoomon is that cute. It's cute like a stuff toy is, but not like I could see a big tough lion-like Digimon falling for it. At least the scene where the Digimon were competing in a costume contest was cute and Yamato being upset that Gabumon didn't win was funny. Priorities, Yamato. Part of the problem could have also been just my expectations since I thought there would be a bit more action or progression. We did get progression and the breathing moments were good for the characters, as well as setting up their conflicts, but it did feel a bit too light-hearted, even with how I could tell that something bad was on the way.
So Meicoomon turns out to be the reason behind the distortion and the Infected Digimon, which was one of the common theories I've heard since the first movie. A couple of other details caught my attention. Meiko's Digivice turned black, which makes me wonder if she'll turn evil or if it will have any effect on her. When Meicoomon attacked Leomon, Himekawa smiled ever so briefly, which makes me wonder if she's secretly a villain. She was shocked about Ken showing up and showed genuine concern about leaving Meicoomon alone, but it could have been an act. Maybe she wants to use Meicoomon to destroy all Digimon so that they don't affect their world. I was kind of hoping for a little bit of the aftermath after the last episode like what happened with the first movie, so that was disappointing.
Overall, it was an enjoyable movie. I think I prefer Reunion over Determination, probably due to the excitement with seeing the group get back together and the more intense fights and how the calmness in this movie felt a bit too jarring and slow at points, but this was still good. Mimi is awesome, both she and Jo had some good focus, which Jo definitely needed after barely being in the first movie, there were some good fights, the new Mega forms were terrific and it does it on a pretty intense cliffhanger. Determination might grow on me more after another watch, but it was still a good solid movie and continuation of Tri.

A couple of other details caught my attention. Meiko's Digivice turned black, which makes me wonder if she'll turn evil or if it will have any effect on her. When Meicoomon attacked Leomon, Himekawa smiled ever so briefly, which makes me wonder if she's secretly a villain. She was shocked about Ken showing up and showed genuine concern about leaving Meicoomon alone, but it could have been an act. Maybe she wants to use Meicoomon to destroy all Digimon so that they don't affect their world. I was kind of hoping for a little bit of the aftermath after the last episode like what happened with the first movie, so that was disappointing.
Overall, it was an enjoyable movie. I think I prefer Reunion over Determination, probably due to the excitement with seeing the group get back together and the more intense fights and how the calmness in this movie felt a bit too jarring and slow at points, but this was still good. Mimi is awesome, both she and Jo had some good focus, which Jo definitely needed after barely being in the first movie, there were some good fights, the new Mega forms were terrific and it does it on a pretty intense cliffhanger. Determination might grow on me more after another watch, but it was still a good solid movie and continuation of Tri.

I knew for a while this movie was going to be depressing, things were not going to work out. The feels, and Tentomon. No Tentomon, when he made the sacrifice I could barely watch.
Though it did have some funny moments, like Gomamon asking Joe if his girlfriend, and I am not alone, by the end of this we better meet Joe's girlfriend, so far we have seen the back of her head.

This was a good movie, but man, was it a hard watch. I cried so many times. This movie shattered my heart into pieces and proceeded to run over them with a truck. And I don't really even consider myself a huge Digimon fan. I obviously like the franchise and most of its series, but compared to other toyetic franchise, I didn't think that this connected to me as much or as strong. Even with that in mind, I firmly believe that this movie should have been called Digimon Adventure Tri: Tears. Confession works for the movie as well, but dang. I was not expecting to cry this much.
The movie started out pretty nicely with Mimi being more accepted by her peers after the results of the festival, which was a nice way to show the resolution of her personal conflict from the last movie. It was also nice to see Mimi and Sora reaching out to Meiko. Losing Meicoomon and seeing her destroy Leomon would hit her pretty hard. Sora reaching out in particular was quite nice since she finally had something to do that didn't involve the potential love triangle of her Taichi and Yamato. Plus, it did give their relationship more weight and helped to make her more like the mom of the group, which she oddly mentioned right when I was thinking about that. The start of the movie did a good job showing how much the group cared about Meiko in general as well. Jo was also much more upbeat than he has been, which was a nice way to show how his personal conflict being resolved helped him to move along and work more with the others.
While they did finally look into Ken's house to see if they could get some answers, Yamato going to Himekawa as their second choice seemed rather strange. They would have some information that they were willing to give, but the weirdest part is that they didn't think of trying to contact Daisuke and his friends or even the other Chosen Children across the world like Taichi did in Reunion. It seemed really strange that going to a shady government group was their second option and Yamato claiming that he was worried also didn't quite fit. They haven't really brought up most of the Adventure 02 gang up until Ken appeared in the Determination. That was one reason why I thought that their memories were rewritten, especially when they didn't seem to act like there were other new Chosen Children before Meiko. I'm sure that this will be expanded on more later given that they've all disappeared and they obviously want to keep the focus on the Adventure gang, which I'm perfectly fine with due to how more interesting they are as individuals and as a group, but it was a rather strange process in the movie.

Takeru not being able to say anything was understandable. He didn't want to have the others fight Patamon or see it being destroyed again. Plus, he wouldn't want to make the others worry. The others were still worried about getting their Digimon out. It was pretty cute how they compared leaving their Digimon at Koshiro's place during school to kids going to preschool. They basically have become parent figures for their Digimon partners now, so I kind of liked that they brought that up in the series. I've felt that way since Reunion. I liked how Takeru was able to talk about the issue with Meiko. It was too hard for him to bring it up with anyone else, but he could confide in her. The way she responded was fitting since there wasn't really an easy answer here.
Patamon telling Takeru to finish him off if he gets violent was so sad. It was already sad enough for Takeru to deal with Patamon being infected, but hearing that from Patamon was already too much. None of the Chosen Children would be able to handle the idea of losing their Digimon partners, but it was probably especially hard on Takeru. He already lost Patamon when he was a little kid and that did make him worry about Patamon during Adventure 02, so that would make this situation be even worse for him. It was quite touching out they hugged and cried together for seemingly hours. Caring about someone that much to where you just cry and hold onto them for as long as you can to the point where nothing else exist during that time is a touching and relatable image. I thought that he was going to talk to Yamato about the situation before he made a joke about his band breaking up again, which was funny and appreciated after that heartache of a scene.
The Digimon running off while Koshiro was busy working also continued to make them feel more like children for the gang. Their reactions upon hearing that Patamon was infected was kind of funny though. Hikari being possessed by something was certainly interesting and made sense given how she has been used for similar situations as well. The quantum sea that they kept referring to instantly made me think of the Dark Ocean plot point. It's a shame that the connection broke off right when it was trying to explain to them what would happen when they'd meet Meicoomon again. It was for drama, as well as to probably make the reboot even easier for Himekawa to do, but it was annoying in a way. I knew that the moment they brought up rebooting the Digital World, the Digimon would lose their memories, but seeing their reactions was pretty sad. They were okay with sacrificing themselves to save their human partners and their worlds, but losing their memories would be hard for all of them. Seeing all of them try to make some final happy memories for their human partners was so sad. It showed all of their relationships quite nicely and there were some funny moments like Gomamon wondering if Jo's girlfriend was a real person, but that scene was too heartbreaking too. Agumon couldn't keep the secret from Taichi, but that was kind of expected when he wouldn't play with Agumon at first.

It would have been a way to have the reboot while still potentially saving their partners. Tentomon reflecting on when he first met Koshiro was quite sweet and sad. Seeing Tentomon reach his Mega level was pretty cool. It looked like the other Digimon regained enough of themselves to be pushed back into the distortion for the reboot.
I was really glad that they kept that scene after the reboot silent. It allowed for the emotional weight of that moment with all of the Chosen Children being affected by this loss to be even stronger. This was the part of the movie that I cried the most at as well. It was sweet how Yamato went to comfort Takeru. He obviously was heartbroken like everyone else was, but his first reaction was to support his little brother and that was really sweet. I was so thankful that this movie had five parts instead of the usual four. Ending the movie there would have made me so mad. We still got a sad ending, but at least it was slightly less depressing compared to how this would have been. Waiting until next year for another installment would have been even harder as well.

You can move on from grief, but you don't forget the people you care about and that would apply to the Digimon partners as well. I liked how all of them seemed to make the same choice about finding their partners at the same time. Taichi's line about how if they wait for someday, they'll all become adults hits way closer to home than I thought it would. I loved how Butterfly started to play right when they made that decision as well. I was wondering when it would play in the movie proper.

I didn't think that Meicoomon had been in the real world for that long. They met possibly around the time Adventure started. She also felt immense guilt for feeling like she was responsible and felt like she didn't deserve to see Meicoomon again as a result. I felt pretty sad for her, especially when she did decide to follow the others only to see that she was too late. I'm sure that they'll find someway to include her in the other movies, but that was a pretty sad note to leave her character on for this movie.

Although, considering that they may not have a way to come back, it was kind of strange how their parents seemingly aren't aware of the situation. The Digital World looked more detailed than I expected, but it would look different with a bigger budget and possibly due to the reboot as well.

I thought that it would be Gatomon or its In Training form to do that so that they could imply that their memories were buried inside of them. Koshiro reaching out and saying how he'd want them to teach him about their world was really sweet yet sad at the same time. It's like they can start over by learning about each other again.

The reboot may not have been permanent or completely used on the Digital World given that there were glitches throughout it as well.

Giving what I am hearing about the dub following the tone of the original Japanese, are finally going to a duel audio Blu Ray / DVD release with these movies? I never thought I see the day.
It is going to keep most of the original music, no censorship, though they are keeping the dub names, that is okay. People are used to those names I understand, though VIZ didn't keep the old dub names for the Sailor Moon redub, just saying, if they change the names in Sailor Moon, why not here, but it not a big deal to me.

Today marks the 25th Year Anniversary of when Pokémon Crystal was released in North America. To this day, the Johto Games remain my favorite games in the Pokémon Franchise.
Today marks the 15th Year Anniversary of ThunderCats (2011). While I find it unfortunate that the show was canceled before it had a chance to finish its story, I am glad that the show's art director was willing to give fans closure via a podcast interview.
Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
