In Sony Pictures Animation's promise to produce more PG-13/R-rated animated movies, Genndy Tartavosky - creator of Dexter's Laboratory and Samurai Jack - has partnered with the company to produce another R-rated computer-animated movie called Fixed. It centers around a male dog who's in love with the show dog next door, but his interest interferes with the fact that he is set to be neutered the following morning. As a result, he tries to make the most out of his last night out with his mates.

So... Basically, it can be perceived that this will be an R-rated Secret Life of Pets. In all honesty, this sounds...interesting. I think there's a good amount of hope for this project because Genndy is by no doubt a legendary man of animation who turns everything me makes into an instant classic. The fact that he himself has said that this movie isn't going to be raunchy-for-the-sake-of-it one and will have a plot and character depth beyond just ball jokes makes me even more intrigued for this to be revealed. I think it will be more affectionate rather than just a tongue-in-cheek parody of Pixar films like Seth Rogen's Sausage Party was. That movie was alright - it provided a few decent laughs, had colorful animation and followed a storyline, but the overall vulgar concentration butchered any higher appreciation I could have had for it as it just felt like it wanted to push boundaries for fun. In contrast I think Fixed won't come anywhere near as vulgar and will have at least 5 minutes devoid of vulgarity - it will have infrequent swearing and sex jokes to my expectations, but will have definite animal genitalia closeups and at least one boundary-pushing explicit scene that grants it its "R" rating. Aside from the orgy ending and the scene where ****** stumbles across a dying juice box, Sausage Party really feels only as explicit as the average episode of Family Guy (bleeping the swears of course). However I think Fixed will have just about enough cleanness that someone could ideally take out the adult elements and turn it into a kids movie without tampering with the plot, which is more than what I could say about attempting to do the same with SP (a movie about food fighting for their lives seem pretty clean on the surface, but taking out the orgy and all the scenes with ******, the drug use and talking booze bottle, and food massacre tampers severely with the buildup and context).

What are your guys' thoughts insofar regarding this adult animated project by Genndy Tartavosky? I certainly can't wait for the trailers or pictures to be released! A tagline like Just Because It's Made by the Same Guy Who Brought Us Dexter's Laboratory Doesn't Mean It's for Kids Stupid would make my day XD.

"Chances are, if you visit sites like this, the name Genndy Tartakovsky needs no introduction to you. Most animation fans adore the man for his talent on display in creations like Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, and Primal (and I didn’t think Unicorn: Warriors Eternal was that bad either).

But there’s a Tartakovsky movie you’ve never seen before, and we don’t mean the Popeye project that never got off the ground. We mean a feature film that was supposed to come out through Warner Bros last year, until they decided they didn’t want it. It’s VERY different, and shows a side of Genndy no one’s seen before: the side capable of producing R-rated sex comedies about bulldogs threatened with the loss of their personal equipment.

Fixed is about Bull, a dog sentenced to be neutered by his owners the following morning. With one last night remaining as a “whole” dog, he decides to go on a hedonistic bucket-list adventure with his buddies, and raunchy chaos ensues. Fixed is also a 2D animated movie, and yes, it was intended for the big screen. If The Day The Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie hadn’t beaten them to it, this would’ve made an…interesting return for the art form after so long."

No way this would do well in theaters considering it's 2D. The adult comedy genre of animation does really well on the small screen, but that never really translated to the big screen probably because television success is based on demographics while movies require the "four quadrant audience." The same reason anime films get $40 million at the US box office at most. The Simpsons Movie is the big exception to this rule as I think its record of highest grossing PG-13 animated movie will stand forever (almost $350 million US box office). The crude premise makes it seem like it won't be Best Animated Feature material. Let's see if the Family Guy audience eats this up or not. This is Genndy's first adult comedy, and that's not something Genndy fans are used to.

I seem to recall Sausage Party being considered successful ($140million on a $19million budget*), but it didn't inspire any copycats, so I guess Hollywood didn't find it particularly noteworthy. Of course 2016 is a while ago now and the market has changed a fair bit since then (streaming was on the rise, but still had a way to go), and it was kind of cashing in on the success of Seth Rogan's other movies, which were on the way out but still somewhat popular at the time. The streaming sequel series last year seemed to be mostly dismissed or ignored. There was talk later on in the pandemic that studios were going to try out PG-13 animated movies, but I guess it never came to anything.

*We'll leave aside, for now, the controversy over how exactly they kept the budget so low

Lets face it, if the movie was released and it did like The Day The Earth Blew Up it would be seen as a HUGE FAILURE. It is for the best they cut to the chase and simply release on streaming.

I like the character designs and I like Genndy, but I’m still not watching this movie. I think it will do better on streaming than it will ever do in theaters.

Reviews out from Annecy:

Every second in that trailer kept getting worse than the previous one. I clicked away when I saw the rats.

Jokes in the trailer are unfunny. Now look, I don't have anything against raunchy humor, and yeah raunchy humor can be funny, but this one isn't hitting it. Perhaps the final movie will be better (early reviews spoke positive for it), but yeah I think it is likely that this movie would be polarizing among people.

given the backlash on it, no wonder why Warner bros & new line cinema didn't want to release it

It's not my thing either but I *guess* I liked the trailer more than most people. I've seen much worse (in all senses).

So now Genndy is trying out-John K. John K.

Why?

I really hope this is just him deliberately going "Well, I needed a bad thing in my resume, better do like it like a pro" and gave us this... thing.

This is the one thing that would have been better off shelved. We lost Popeye and Can You Imagine but we got this.
