Anthony Bourdain-Penned Graphic Novels to Become Adult Swim TV Show (Exclusive)

'Get Jiro!' joins comic series adaptation 'Super Mutant Magic Academy' in landing a series order from Adult Swim, while 'My Adventures With Superman' has been renewed for season three.

Set in the near future, the show centers on a mysterious, revenge-focused sushi chef named Jiro in a version of Los Angeles where customers resort to murder to secure a table at coveted restaurants. Get Jiro! is created by Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka, who co-wrote last year’s A24 feature Sharper which starred Julianne Moore and Sebastian Stan, and they were producers on NBC’s comedy series Superstore. Bourdain and Rose’s first graphic novel in the franchise was published in 2012.

EDIT: I forgot to mention this. Get Jiro is going to have 10 episodes.

Annecy is in mid June, so that would put this right into the strike zone of possibly replacing Lazarus in mid July. That would give them about 1 month to promote it after Annecy, which is usually right about how much promotion they tend to do.

6/12/25: Here's a summary from the Annecy panel.

Someone who attended thinks they said the animation was done by Mercury and the very first finished scene was played.

6/22: They finished storyboarding.

Definitely next year well 2nd half of next year at the earliest I'd guess.

6/10: Hmm, DL article says 10 episodes and premieres later this year. Probably after My Adventures With Season 3 concludes around August 15-ish then I think Get Jiro! will rerun in its slot while premiering Sunday nights (like Primal).

Looks like press from the event is being released. Probably was an embargo that just lifted.

The only reason they even do that for Primal is because Genndy has a thing against Toonami. Without an outside reason, I don’t see why they wouldn’t let Toonami have the premier. Especially with the current subpar state the block is in,

There is a precedent forming. They could have premiered Common Side Effects on Toonami but they followed the same airing pattern as Primal. My Adventures with Superman was a little different, having started with Adult Swim Thursday nights then replayed on Toonami before it became a Toonami premiere with season 2 and on.

The thing is Common Side Effects had more of a buffer than Primal. Primal had a six day delay before airing on Toonami. That’s normal same week encores for different audiences, more like the two day delay My Adventures with Superman season 1 had. CSE started on Sundays and took a month before reaching Toonami. I’m glad it did though because I hadn’t been watching it on Sundays and ended up catching up before the finale aired. MAWS also seems to be doing better since reaching Toonami. Considering the poor track record of anime like Super Milk Chan and Big O on Sunday, I don’t think Get Jiro will be there… or if it will, it’ll be on Thursday and or Sunday with a same week Toonami encore.

Common Side Effects isn’t really a Toonami brand show though. The only reason we ended up having it was because it was that drought period where they had literally nothing else to air.

Even when they started it, they had to have a custom TOM intro where he flat out admitted it wasn’t a Toonami style show but to try it anyway.

So that’s gonna leave a pretty big gap between the end of Superman and this starting, if we are going by the actual start of fall which is late September.

If the dub turnaround is fast enough, and Viz is cooperative enough, maybe that’s where Bleach slides in to cover the lead for awhile, then slides down to 12:30 when Get Jiro starts

Is is possible they would double up at some point and have both Curtis and Jiro premieres starting say August 16 or 23 then start to rerun Jiro episodes at the start of the Toonami block starting August 29? Superman would end on August 15 and likely a marathon on August 22.

I’m still really not on board with the idea that Get Jiro will not be a Toonami premier. So whatever Curtis is doing won’t matter. They may have a Sunday rerun for Jiro as they did for Rooster Fighter though.

If they were to bring in an anime to replace Superman, I think the presumed Lazarus rerun will end right around the time the block needs an empty slot to slide Jiro in up top.
