Mighty No. 9: The Animated Series announced

This is just coming out from the Anime Expo this weekend, legendary video game creator Keiji Inafune announced that Digital Frontier is working on a CGI cartoon for the upcoming crowd-funded video game Mighty No. 9.

None of the money from the game's kickstarter campaign is going towards this, this is all separately funded. Kinda weird to see imo, since the game itself won't be out until sometime next spring.

Webseries may have more creative freedom, but they also have much smaller budgets. For example, Bravest Warriors has substantially smaller budget than a TV cartoon and while it may look good, it has very short episodes with long periods between each release.

Considering this Mighty No. 9 cartoon is going to be CG animated, it's going to need a good budget if it wants to look good. I don't know if the webseries route will provide it with a budget that can produce well animated episodes in a reasonable amount of time.

I find it odd that the show is going to be CG, considering the game it's based off of is a 2D animated platformer.

Aside from being a sidescroller there's nothing 2D about the game.

Anyhoo, webseries will likely be the best route. Not many networks are going to want to pick up a series based on a game not known outside the creator's fanbase. Some networks might and selling it to a few broadcasters (including Hulu or Netflix) will help pay for production. If they enable ads for the videos they can earn revenue from that as well.
But who knows? PayPal might be enough. I don't know how big Comcept is, but some companies have enough money to spend on animated web shorts with ease, like Mattel who have cartoons based on Barbie, Monster High, and Ever After High.

If this does air on tv, I would have to guess it'll air on Cartoon Network. Lately they've been obtaining CG shows such as Sonic Boom and the new Inspector Gadget series.

No. It was like that for Season 1 for the most part aside from the midseason break, but in Season 2 the show went on breaks very frequently, with weeks at a time between episodes. I don't think there were any weekly releases for Season 2, or at least not very many.

That's unfortunate, but understandable. As Gatordragon said, making a cartoon of TV level quality takes a long time and a lot of money. Cartoon Hangover makes videos showing behind the scenes, animatics, sneak peeks, and apparently trivia games, all of which help fund new episodes. The licensed goods definitely helps as well.

For the record, this is being produced in Japan and probably should be in the anime section, or at least mirrored.

Anyways, my initial thoughts aren't... exactly that good. While I'm not entirely against CGI (very much prefer 2D animation), I'm more worried about the mention of this being a "Comedy" series with action. Of course, the wording could just be poor, and it's just an action series with comedy, but the teaser trailer says otherwise.

Not exactly sure who did Beck's voice in the trailer. I can tell it's female, though and might be Japanese. The yells, in particularly, sound familiar, but I can't tell completely just based off of that. Very curious who will be casted as the characters, overall.

That's my concern too. Why can't we get any serious action cartoons nowadays? Pac-Man, Sonic Boom, both video game cartoons that seem to have comedy over action, and I fear this will be the same.

Well, as long as its better than Pac-Man. That show, at its worst, can be horrendous.

Networks / companies are just following modern trends. Comedy is just more popular with today's young audience.

No, pure comedy shows are usually fine. Its when they try to make a comedy/action hybrid where it seems to go wrong for some reason.

Just curious, GatorDragon, have you watched the new Pac-Man cartoon? That show is a good example of what I mean.

In any case, I just saw the teaser myself. Now, I do realize that that this may or may not reflect what the actual show will be like, but If it does. That is, if this is just going to be another generic comedy series that doesn't even try to be unique, I'm not going to bother. Comedy is one thing, but all this trailer did was parody film trailers in general...and make Beck look like an idiot; something any trailer could have done with any main character. I don't know about anyone else, but I want to see an actual TV series based on this game, not another parody (genre, self, or otherwise) in the form of one that just happens to have a recognizable (to whatever degree) character and concept.

In any case, it's really too early for an adaptation of any kind yet, especially since the game hasn't even come out yet. Furthermore, by having "The Animated Series" in the actual title, they're implying that this will actually be based on the game, rather than being a separate medium that assumes people aren't familiar with the game. I know he said from the start that he would like to see his game adapted into some other kind of medium (e.g, a live-action movie, an animated movie, an anime [of some kind], a live-action TV series, etc.), but (and assuming he doesn't sell out to Capcom in the end, which I don't think he will, but still) I really do hope that he's doing the right thing, since if this ends up being a failure, he's going to have a whole lot of egg on his face...

Hmm, I see. I guess with a action/comedy hybrid, you gotta balance the action and the comedy just right or else the show is gonna have a problem.

And yes, I have seen Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures. I think it's mediocre, so I see why you're concerned that Mighty No 9 might end up like Pac-Man as it's apparently going to be an action/comedy hybrid as well.
