No, April 1 didn't come early.

An all-new anime adaptation of the ONE PIECE manga starting from the iconic East Blue saga is coming to Netflix! Titled THE ONE PIECE, the anime series will be produced by the renowned WIT Studio, recognized for their work on hit anime such as SPY x FAMILY and Attack on Titan.

No footage yet, of course.

So, kneejerk thoughts....

1. I'm wondering if this is a reaction to the success of One Piece live action or something they already had cooking and negotiating concurrent with this. Wonder if we will ever find out.

2. Remember the "Brotherhood or original?!?!" debate with Fullmetal Alchemist? Just wait until this hits. Yeah.

So...you know, I think the original show is [still] great. The Wano arc shows just how hard a TV anime can still go these days. Still, the material they're starting with is very old. It will be a long LONG time before this gets to everything - if it does. So basically, I say try not to see this as a rival. It's a direct consequence of the original and a kind of celebration of it.

So the manga and original show will be there for the invested fans and it'll still get attention...and then, hypothetically at least, this thing could be there for the "here's what the hype was about" for everybody else after it's all over.

"One Piece with good pacing the anime"......

Damn, seriously?

Wow. Yeah.

We already got a live action remake of East Blue, so a threemake of the same exact story? That seems like overkill to me. WIT at least will probably provide flashier action than Toei's usual work, but this is probably going to be a skip for me like the first season of the Kenshin remake that retreaded what we've already seen in the original anime. Really, it took a while for One Piece to become the slow placed slug it eventually became known for as it's not till Dressrosa that arcs with triple digit episode counts happened. Brotherhood at least contained major plot differences to make it a more faithful adaptation of the manga.

Considering how often I hear of the big barrier of entry to the original anime from it's pacing, to how dated it looks, to other issues, I can see the appeal of this remake. And Netflix probably wants their own version of the OP anime.

I'm curious to see what a Studio WIT One Piece looks like and what kind of staff they can get onboard.

Given they have Mayumi Tanaka in the teaser I'm guessing they're going to bring back the original VA's. But it has to be the most surreal thing ever to be doing current OP anime, dubbing the live-action adventures of your original show, and then redoing it all over again in a remake.

As someone who watched the original Kenshin anime and is currently watching the remake, I'm not sure what expectations you had since it was announced that it was going to adapt the manga more faithfully and that means covering arcs that were also in the original anime. Also, while there are similarities, there are differences between both where it's not the exact same scenes(they even adapted a manga chapter that came out in 2010 that obviously wasn't in the original anime).

I think this series will be mainly for the newbies rather than veterans. Still, that seemed like what the live action was doing. Still, it is possible they can pump out episodes at a faster pace than the live action and make it to Baroque Works before the live action does.

Wonder if One Piece has any ancillary material that they can adapt that isn't in the original anime. I think that two-parter in Kenshin got some eyeballs from the fans of the old anime ready to see the new stuff. Maybe there will at least be that kind of treat.

I'll give it a shot- I dropped the Toei One Piece very early on since it showed no signs of stopping and it would take forever to catch up (movies/specials aside- I often catch those since they're standalone stories), so if they can condense things a bit better I'm all for it.

There's a few novel stories and stories told in the title pages of chapters that they could adapt.

This is a unprecedented situation since we have the original anime still airing at the time of a remake being announced. On the other hand a properly paced One Piece adaptation would span at least 450+ episodes as of this week. That's longer than old school Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z combined and with all of their filler added in. I could see why Netflix would want an updated and more streamlined anime to air alongside the live-action.

On the other hand, I take a lot of exception to claims on other forums that the older episodes of the Toei anime look too "dated" and "low budget" to bring in younger viewers, so a remake in a more modern style was necessary. Maybe I have rose-tinted glasses when I watch early One Piece, but cheap and low-quality are not the first words that come to mind about the visuals. Maybe the animation is not as lavish as shorter and more focused shows like Spy x Family or Attack on Titan, or even Cowboy Bebop to use a show that aired in the late 1990's, but hardly cheap. The real dark age was from around Punk Hazard to the end of Dressrosa, but even there it was adequate rather than outright terrible.

This feels off topic, but is anyone seriously going to argue that a show like Zeta Gundam has worse animation than Dr. Stone because it was made over three decades earlier? I've seen a lot of anime from the past ten years that have a generally cleaner, brighter more consistent ascetic stemming from the use of digital animation but they are not especially well animated. Yet critics (really just anonymous people on forums and Reddit) treat them as a huge advance over the older production styles. The most recent example here is the 1996 Rurouni Kenshin anime vs the 2023 remake. Honestly nothing I see in the new show is so amazing that it has outdone the original, and outdoing the fight scenes from the 1996 version of the Kyoto Arc (some of the best animation from a TV anime in the 90's) is going to be a tall order.

If Studio Wit does a better job with The One Piece compared to Toei, it just proves to me if you throw enough time and money at a prestige animation studio then chances are it will produce a high quality production, because that is how animation production works. Not because it is 'new' and therefore better. Also, I doubt any other studio other than Toei would have kept One Piece in production for nearly twenty-five years so that we even have this comparison. I just hope this new adaptation does its job, which is to introduce more new fans to this wonderful story that has entertained generations of people across the world.

I wonder how they'll handle the music. The Toei anime has some pretty iconic soundtracks. Will they recycle that music or come up with their own?

I also wonder how long this new series will take to release, and how many episodes will drop at a time. This is Netflix and not weekly TV, so we're going to wait loooooong periods between each saga/arc.

If the OP isn't a modern version of "We Are," I'll be shocked.

I'm guessing it's also going to be one-cour seasons spread across a few years.

Makes me wonder if some of the character designs will be changed. Probably nothing major, but I’d would be more inclined to watch One Piece if the designs weren’t distractingly disproportioned or weirdly geometric were it shouldn’t be.

I don’t really think it’s likely to make One Piece have a more realistic art style. A lot of people who don’t follow One Piece were shocked at Luffy’s recent transformation, but it is just One Piece being cartoonish like it always has been. I’m sure it will look different than the Toei anime in some ways, especially the color palette. But the overall look of One Piece is not likely to be something Oda will compromise on.

On the one hand, I get what you're saying, the designs can be kind of weirdly proportioned at times. On the other hand, this does make them stand out.

"One Piece Anime Goes On Hiatus; 25th Anniversary Special To Air, Followed By Remastered “Fishman Island” Arc"

One-Piece-Fan-Letter-2.jpg

"Toei’s hit One Piece anime, which tells the story of Monkey D. Luffy’s journey to be King of the Pirates, is going on hiatus after this week’s episode 1122. The series was in the middle of adapting the Egghead arc, which has recently finished in the manga. 37 manga chapters of this arc remain to be adapted by the anime, which will return in April.

Next week, a special called One Piece Fan Letter will be airing on October 20 to celebrate the anime’s 25th anniversary. This special is based on a 2017 novel called One Piece: Straw Hat Stories. The story will focus on ordinary people impacted by the Straw Hat Pirates, including a girl who idolizes Nami. The special will be set just after the 2 year timeskip, when the Straw Hats reunited at Sabaody Archipelago.

Following this special, the anime will be replaced by a redone version of the Fishman Island arc. This arc was originally 51 episodes, but will be reduced by 30 episodes to a 21 episode special cut. The original anime version of the arc is known for being one of the less popular One Piece arcs due to pacing issues, including an 8 episode flashback sequence."

Wow, we're really getting One Piece Kai for one arc! And that's not even counting the upcoming Netflix remake LOL!
