Pokemon X/Y - New Pokemon Series (Discussions)

I just noticed that Tomioka Atsuhiro was responsible for Series Organization for Tanken Driland: Sen'nen no Mahou, which just aired its final episode. This would explain why Tomioka hasn't written many scripts of Pocket Monster himself in the past year.

I haven't gotten around to seeing it yet, but it would appear Iwane Masa'aki received the first credit under Key Animation for episode #21. I'm kind of surprised he provided so many cuts for another animation supervisor and episode director considering his modus operandi has been to only work with Asada Yuuji and provide all of the key animation for an episode himself. Iwane is also the animation supervisor for the special next week, which is airing about seven weeks after his last solo episode. I guess he's been a busy beaver again!

Episode #21

Finally, a Serena episode. More surprisingly, Iwane Masa'aki provided enough key animation this week to receive top credit! This was certainly a surprising turn of events. He's spent the last year or so providing all three hundred cuts for a single episode himself. I wonder how this will affect his next episode, especially since he's the animation supervisor for the 03 April 2014 special? Will the wait be longer? I hope doesn't miss out on the upcoming Satoshi versus Zakuro, lest Satoshi lose the first match and be forced to have a rematch a few episodes later. I actually wouldn't mind that, especially after Zakuro defeated Viola.

The thing that is most difficult about doing PokeVision is that to actually make the storyline worthwhile you need to use good key animators, a good director, and plenty of drawings. In other words, real money and talent is necessary to animate these sort of episodes, which makes them not very practical in the grand scheme of things. Nevertheless, Eureka continues to be hilarious and cute. I hope she has a running arc of trying to make a marriage video for Citron while Serena works on her videos.

I wonder how much money Citron spends on the materials for his crazy inventions. Maybe his backpack is Time Lord technology, which explains why his materials come out of nowhere? :p As a Gym Leader he probably receives a government check, so I doubt money is a problem. Speaking of which, I suspect we'll see an episode in the future where Citron is forced to choose between returning to the gym or staying with Satoshi before the end of the series. Of course, I kind of suspect that ending with Citron's old man taking over the gym...

Fokko's face says everything you need to know about its personality, which I just love. I wish the cartoon was more open with the genders of the Pokemon so I didn't have to use 'it'. It is a shame it doesn't get to battle more often, with Will-o-Wisp and Flamethrower it could really do some damage. The running gag with it firing on Satoshi was nice. Heck, it's more personality than Serena herself has shown off.

I hope Musashi continues doing videos. She needs something now that we're not doing contests anymore. I'd love to see her alter-ego accidentally become super-popular. Having Musashi move from town to town only to become a regular actor on some drama that has different location shoots would be a nice change of pace.

HOT DANG. Iwane went all out for the Mega Evolution special. Definitely some of the best work he's ever done, if you ask me. I hope he gets to be in charge of the rest of the specials!

Hmm.... It seems that the gym battle has been confirmed to be XY #25. If the Mega-Evolution special is treated as an episode in Iwane's regular rotation, XY #26 would probably be his closest next episode as animation supervisor. A similar situation happened at the end of BW with the Brock/Cilan special - that episode also fit exactly into his rotation, and was treated as part of his usual schedule.

So I'm thinking/hoping he might do some key animation for the battle. I'd love to be surprised, though!

Edit: Forgot to mention that the show will be taking a break during the first week of May for the World Table Tennis Championship games, so XY #25 will be airing on May 8th.

Yeah, that was a Hell of a special. I'm glad Iwane was able to do it all himself. I hope they've already scheduled Act II so that Iwane can solo it, too. Also, Blast Burn was used in an animated work for the first time! That's lovely to see. I love the way Mega Evolution feels big and heavy. Personally, had I been writing the episode I think I would have preferred the Pokemon to absorb the Mega Stones into their bodies so it didn't feel so open to being dislodged from the user's person. Here's hoping Alan shows up to battle Satoshi someday!

I just heard about episode #25. It's a shame the production staff couldn't wiggle around and stuff a few extra episodes before the second gym battle. Who knows, perhaps Satoshi will lose in episode #25 or the battle will be multiple episodes.

We know what the focus Pokemon will be up through episode #31, it seems. I suspect a big deal going to be made out of the third gym leader thanks to her Mega Lucario. It's a shame we're repeating ourselves like this, but I suspect its thanks to the producers at Game Freak and Nintendo.

I can't wait to see that Burshamon in action, though. Hopefully Satoshi does some Mega battling in this set of episodes.

Is this any good?

I've rediscovered my love for Pokemon the last couple weeks or so because of Soul Silver and X&Y on the 3DS, but idk about the anime.

Read our posts and take from them what you will.

Yeah just saw the first episode. Lol, those two are still trying to steal Pikachu. It's like nothing has changed since when I was a kid.

They actually tried to make Team Rocket more serious in the last series, but that didn't really take off if making them comedy relief villains again is any indication.

As for XY, I've been primarily following the dub, so I can't speak much on episodes that have only aired on Japan at this point, but I would recommend giving it a shot. The characters are fun, the group dynamic is pretty solid, the battles are full of good strategies, which is still a breath of fresh air after the battles in BW, and there are some interesting setups with some of the new characters, like Serena not having a goal right now and Clemont's connection to the Lumiose Gym. I'd try to watch at least the first few episodes and see how you feel about it afterwards.

Yeah I like what i see so far, it's Saturday morning cartoon fun at its best. Though I'll be disappointed if Charizard doesn't show up.

Considering that they made a big deal about its return in BW, despite how it did pretty much nothing significant afterwards, and it has two Mega Evolution, I'm sure that Charizard will show up at some point. Since Pokemon Origins and the Strongest Mega Evolution special showcased Mega Charizard X, I could see them giving Ash Mega Charizard Y whenever they decide to give him the means to make Pokemon Mega Evolve.

Iris vs Ibuki! The Road to Become a Dragon Master!!

A Best Wishes special aired during XY! I'm glad this episode wasn't abandoned merely because we were already nearly two cours into the current TV series.

I'm glad Kairyuu could take a beating. I was afraid we were going to be stuck with a short battle. This is the first time I can recall a Pokemon being allowed to take repeated strikes for quite a while. It is always more exciting when a Pokemon can take multiple strikes. There is definitely a greater sense of scale this way.

I'm surprised that there isn't a Mega Evolution for Kairyuu. It's such a popular Pokemon one would think it would get one, especially since Gablias and Bangiras received Mega Evolutions. Having Iris return in XY with a Mega Kairyuu to battle Satoshi's Lizardon would have been a nice way to continue their match from Best Wishes Episode #116.

Yeah the Mega Evolution is why I want to see that. And you get to choose a Kanto starter in the X/Y games, so all the more it would make sense.

Tbh, Team Rocket is kind of ruining this for me. They're not inherently bad characters, but I don't understand why the writers feel the need for them to hijack Every. Single. Episode. I also don't get why Ash treats them seriously at this point. He should be laughing them off or at least consider them annoying by now.

Series Organizer Tomioka Atsuhiro has been pretty good about not including the Rockets in every episode, especially during Best Wishes. I seem to recall there being at least one or two episodes in XY where they do not appear, like episode #20.

I'm kind of surprised that Dragonite didn't get a Mega Evolution as well. Granted, I don't think it needed one, but if they gave Garchomp, the prime example of overpowered Dragon types, a Mega Evolution, then Dragonite could have gotten one too due to its popularity. Although, I wouldn't have wanted Iris to have a Mega Dragonite if that was a possibility. Handing her a Dragonite on a silver platter was bad enough, but allowing her to Mega Evolve it would just further glorify Iris as a special trainer when she really isn't, or at least I don't think she is. Plus, I'm still hoping that Iris's special here counts for her XY cameo since I see no reason for her to appear in Kalos, but that's probably not going to happen.

I don't think that Team Rocket shows up in every episode of XY. I can remember at least three episodes so far that didn't include them, such as the Gym battle episodes and that episode about the Pokemon Smuggler. There might have been another episode or two where they didn't appear that I've either forgotten about or hasn't been dubbed yet. They appeared even less frequently in BW, but they also had no personalities for the most part until near the end of the series. Personally, I never had a problem with Team Rocket showing up in every episodes prior to BW. They can provide some funny moments and can liven up an otherwise boring episode. I'm fine with them not appearing all the time in XY though as long as they keep their personalities.

Hmm, well I've only seen the first few so far.

Also is it just me, or does Ash's cap look like Red's from the first gen games?

I think that Ash's new hat looks like Red's hat in FR/LG as well. I remember seeing that reaction quite a bit when Ash's new outfit was revealed. I'm not sure why they did that, but it's a nice touch.

Somewhat related: Iwane was the top credited key animator on today's series premiere of OLM's Dragon Collection. Do note that Dragon Collection episodes are only 11 minutes long, though.

It's always surprising to see him credited on non-Pokemon related things these days. I wonder how and if this may have affected his work on XY? I also wonder if he'll be a continual key animator for the show, or if this was one a one-time thing. I guess we'll see!

Edit: In case anybody's curious, I'm about 101% sure Iwane did the main character's dragon summoning stock footage cuts.

Thank you, Romania, we thought the film will never see the light of day here. Still, why are you waiting some more and launching the film days later than in good ol America?

Today marks the 5th Year Anniversary of the HD Version of Skyward Sword. I appreciated how the HD Version of the game included quality of life improvements such as the option to use button controls.
You know at this point we really need to admit it is never coming home.
