NEW POLL Simpsons TalkBack " Monkey Suit" 5/14

After visiting an evolution exhibit narrated by guest star Griffith, Flanders pushes Mayor Quimby to appoint Reverend Lovejoy as a "Mortality Czar" in charge of spreading the theory of creationism. Darwin's theories are quickly outlawed and Lisa finds herself as the only supporter of the scientific theory. After holding secret evolution classes, Lisa is arrested and retains Southern lawyer Wallace Brady (Hagman) to help defend her beliefs in front of a judge. While Flanders is on the stand in court, Homer's antics cause him to crack under pressure and he calls Homer an ape, which leads the judge to believe Homer resembles the missing link - putting a monkey wrench in the prosecutors' case.

Missed the first 7 minutes :(

I don't know how i feel about the episode I enjoyed it but it kind of felt as a preachy South Park episode at some points which i didn't like.

does this mean moe has a son? maybe i'm thinking too much into a gag but i don't know...this isn't Family Guy you know..

best part was the Christian scientist hahaha

btw what is the M in LMS?

"Mr. Flanders, are you sure that man and ape are not related?"

"As sure as I am that Jesus hates hip-hop." :p

Pretty straightforward episode, but it had its moments. The disguised Nelson was a highlight.

The way "This video will evade all your questions" was said made me laugh. This episode strangely felt superior to what I've seen this season.

When Bart said he needed to see a Summer Blockbuster, in the back of my mind--- MIB popped up--

but I never figured they'd actually do it. HEHE. I havn't laughed that hard in a while. Man, it's almost 9 years later and MIB is still popping up.

The Simpsons versions of Agents Kay and Jay were awesome! I wish I had a pic of the character designs for my web page.

It's was a fine episode, solid even. I think the whole main reason why I didn' 100% enjoy it so much was I'm just sick and tired of Lisa protesting everything she dislikes in such a close minded view....well, until the ending. Although rushed, I made a smile when Lisa shared her respect for other beliefs to the Flanders. Ahh, there's hope yet.

Oh, and Bart stretching Milhouse ("Come on, Milhouse, don't you want to be in the NBA?") got a laugh out of me.

Somebody goofed. Brady was the prosecutor.

Intresting fact about tonight's episode: the opening was originally to air in 2003!

Go back and watch "I'm Spelling As Fast As I Can" and you'll notice that the very beginning is extremely similar to tonight's opening scene (y'know, with Booberella?)...that's because the 2003 episode's opening scene is a short alternative. The entire thing with Bart rushing his summer was all written and animated in 2002, hence the MIB gag. (the sequel came out in 2002)

Sharp-eyed viewers will notice that Bart's "summer romance" was featured in the promos for the 300th episode that aired with the spelling episode in 2003...

Said joke happened to be better than said sequel was. :D

"Daddy was mommy a monkey, I can't remember?"

I don't know why I find that funny. Good episode I liked how it dealt with the issues of evolution and what people think about it and the couch gag was great. Not the best but still one of the better ones for this season. B+

It was pretty good. It actually had a driving force behind the plot and the pacing worked pretty well. I'd even go so far as to say that the pacing was close to Golden Age pacing.

It certainly had problems, of course. Lisa felt pretty inconsistently written. Telling Marge that she had to choose between "belief and science" was a poorly written line, and overall her intentions just weren't clear enough. Her respect for other beliefs at the end of the episode felt like a sudden change of heart, except that it doesn't seem like it was supposed to be (nothing happened to change her mind).

The trial was pretty anticlimactic in general, too. Homer as the missing link was probably funny in the writing room, but it really short-changed the plot. With such a stupid resolution to the trial, and such over-the-top stuff going on (like the lawyer feeding a baby deer and saying Evolution killed its mother), it really did start to feel like South Park, with Lisa as Stan Marsh.

That's probably the main problem with the episode overall. Too much of Lisa preaching stuff, and not enough really going on. Her arrest was quite over-the-top and not really a very good conflict. The plot progressed fairly nicely (by comparison to newer episodes, anyway), but nothing really happened with her. If there was supposed to be a change of heart, we didn't see it happening at all.

But I expected it to be so much worse. Flanders' characterization was not nearly as ridiculous as I'd thought, and Rev. Lovejoy was his typical self (though a bit exaggerated in the way he milked the controversy). And the message, while a bit too South Parkian, was not as heavy-handed as I thought it would be. I thought the "Myth of Creationism" exhibit in the museum was a nice touch, giving a bit of balance to the episode.

They've officially run out of clever ideas for storylines.

Not to mention the fact that they already did a "science vs. religion" storyline in Season 9.

Yeah, but that was even less balanced.

Let's face it, by now everyone knows any hot subject addressed on The Simpsons is going to be handled with a liberal bent so extreme that it's intended to look ridiculous--not a good thing. Once again, these guys have no case and spent the entire episode screaming that they were right and doing little else. There's not much difference between the film the kids had to watch of Darwin making out with Satan and most political episodes The Simpsons put on. All conservatives and religious beliefs are made to look crazy and all liberals are the sole saviours of mankind. Fox News was never like this.

Thank goodness for King of the Hill--it adds balance to the night.

.....and on a different subject, why are two Raven heads suddenly looking at me from the emoticon bar?

Folks, y'know how most people agree that while the Simpsons got lame, it never really "jumped the shark"? Well...it just did.

That was just...weak. And to make things even sadder, it totally pulled a GI Joe: the Movie: whereas ONE minor note from a previous episode pretty much contradicted the ENTIRE plot of the episode. In one of the final GOOD Christmas specials, Quimby points to a sign on public property saying "God free since '63"- so this episode ENTIRELY contradicted that. And please don't bring in "oh, but this is a school house'- yes, which is a PUBLIC BUILDING.

While things may have been corny at times, I enjoyed this episode a whole lot-- I laughed good and hard. It's been one of the best episode I've seen in a while.
